Assam (アッサム, Assamu)[1] was a Greed Island player,[2] hired by Battera, and a founding member of an alliance formed to clear the game.[3]
Appearance[]
Assam was a man of average height and build. He had a defined jaw, a slightly upturned nose, squinty eyes, and short eyebrows. His hair was a dark blond color and in a mound towards the top.[2] He was seen wearing a lavender shirt in the 2011 anime adaptation and an ash-gray shirt in the 1999 anime adaptation.
Personality[]
Like his fellow alliance members, he had an informative personality with extensive knowledge of the game.[2]
Plot[]
Greed Island arc[]
Assam with his fellow Alliance members and possible new recruits
Assam is amongst the players trying to recruit new players into their alliance. He discloses that there are three ways to obtain cards in the game and allows the new players to name them. He elaborates on the sudden increase of people using the most unscrupulous method of obtaining cards because of the card conversion limit and how it's responsible for the spike in player hunters and deaths within the game. The alliance, however, has managed to obtain 67 of the 100 specified slot cards. In the five years since the alliance started, all seemed hopeless initially, but in recent months it doubled the number of members and cards.[2] So, to stop the needless bloodshed over the years, the alliance members ask the new players to join their group. In the end, only two of the possible five join (whose names are Abengane and Puhat).[3]
Afterward, the alliance members meet up with Jispa, who uses a "Leave" card on each of the two new members and reports that Contarch has recruited eight new members. This causes the alliance members Genthru and Nickes to get into an argument over the reward money, but Assam stops them by telling them that Nomdieu and Isaac may overhear their conversation.[3]
Genthru reveals himself as, "The Bomber" to the Nickes' Alliance
After Nickes announces that the alliance has nearly completed its goal, Genthru gets the group's attention and reveals that he is the Bomber and has placed bombs on all of the alliance members. Hearing this revelation, Jispa tries to incapacitate him but gets his face blown off first.[4] Genthru then explains his two Nen abilities to the alliance and escapes. Assam curses the fact that Genthru will be getting away with 50 billion while he was supposed to split
20 billion with the other founders. He gets into an abrasive argument with a junior member whose payout is paltry compared to his. Nickes stops the argument and beseeches that the group hand over their cards to save Jispa's life.[5]
Bara drops off a "gift" for the alliance members
A man by the name of Bara, who later reveals that he is also a Bomber member, delivers Puhat's severed head as an example to the group to give in to their demands. He also discloses an alternate way for them to disarm the bombs. The alliance members eventually surrender their cards, but instead of disarming the bombs, the Bombers detonate them and kill nearly all of the alliance members.[6]
Assam's name is seen in Gon's binder.[7]
Abilities & Powers[]
Since most of the alliance members joined because they lacked combat abilities, it can be assumed that Assam also had none.[5]
Nen[]
Due to being able to access Greed Island, Assam was capable of utilizing Nen.[8]
