The Book of Tyson (
Overview[]
It contains non-violent[2] preachings that, according to her, will bring about world peace once everyone becomes her disciple.[1] Its contents are supposedly able to awaken a special power within the reader.[3] It is a very derivative work entirely, or almost so, made up of song lyrics. After reading it, however, Giuliano began to think that the evocative power of song lyrics makes it very effective and gripping.[2]
Plot[]
Succession Contest arc[]
In an exuberant mood, Tyson gives two copies of the bible to Izunavi and Giuliano. She suggests they read the book. According to her, when the entire world reads it, world peace would be achieved. Immediately, Izunavi reads the first chapter of the book entitled, "Love will always triumph in the end ♥". Instantly disgusted, Izunavi closes the book, while Giuliano offers to teach him how to praise a book he hasn't read yet.[1]
The following day Tyson asks them if they have read it, to which Giuliano responds by singing its praise while admitting that he, in fact, has not. Izunavi honestly admits he has yet to have the time to read it and the prince forgives him and promises that it will awaken a special power inside of them, so Giuliano salutes her and declares that his feelings are already evolving.[3]
As Tyson reads from the book, Izunavi and Giuliano discuss the text, with the two making references that the other doesn't understand. It's then revealed that the ability of Tyson's Guardian Spirit Beast causes eye-wogs to stick to those who receive a copy of the book. The creatures collect aura from their hosts in exchange for happiness, which is dependent upon how thoroughly the host has read the book. It's then stated that breaking the sole taboo in the book brings about severe punishment.[4]
By the 10th day of the voyage, however, Giuliano has finished reading it and has been won over by it despite acknowledging it is a propaganda tool.[2]
Later, as Giuliano happily roleplays for Tyson, Izunavi say to himself that while Giuliano doesn't seem different, he gets very quiet when he reads the book. He is confident that the book is linked to the ability of Tyson's Nen beast, hoping that it might be able to get the King to cancel the succession contest if it truly proselytizes love. Izunavi asks Tyson if she gave the book to the other Princes, and she replies that while she gave it to the lower Princes and their mothers, they probably haven't read it. He then asks if she gave it to the King, and she says that she asked her mother about it, hoping that it means he has a copy since it was her condition to take part in the succession contest. Izunavi politely asks Tyson if she can convince her mother to ask the King at the next banquet to read the book, stressing that it could be the key to changing the ship's fate. Tyson becomes happy at Izunavi's words and agrees to ask her mother about the request.[5]
Trivia[]
- Its in-universe name, as seen on the book cover, is "The Taithon Canon".[1]
- On the fifth day of the voyage, a book with a large white "T" on a black cover can be seen on a table in Salé-salé's quarters near his bed.[6] Although the cover differs from the copies given to Izunavi and Giuliano,[1] it is possible that this is a copy of the book since Tyson later mentions that she gave them to the lower Princes and their mothers.[5]
Intertextuality and References[]
- In the book's fourth chapter, there is a section titled "Khana chronicles".[4] Nishina Khana appears to be the Hunter × Hunter counterpart to real-life singer Kana Nishino.
- Both artists have written a song titled "Darling".[4]
- The final chapter of the book is titled "What a Wonderful World",[2] in all likelihood after the real-life song.
