Butch (ブッチ, Bucchi) is a high-ranking soldier in the Royal Army of the Kakin Empire, and one of the personal soldiers of 1st Prince Benjamin.[1] When Benjamin ordered his men to join the guards of his fellow Princes, Butch joined the guard of 5th Prince Tubeppa.[2] Sometime between days 6 and 9, he was replaced by fellow soldier Rihan[3]. On Day 11, Butch was seen guarding the hallway in the VVIP area leading to Benjamin's confinement quarters.[4]

Appearance[]

Butch is a bald, stocky man with a round face. He has large round eyes, thin eyebrows, a snub nose,[1] and a slight double chin.[2] He wears the standard Kakin military attire of zipper jacket, pants, and dark combat boots.[5] He wears an earpiece in his left ear.[2]

Background[]

As one of the First Prince's soldiers, Butch graduated from Kakin's Royal Military Academy and became a part of his army.[6]

Plot[]

Succession Contest arc[]

Butch is among the soldiers working under 1st Prince Benjamin, that is present during Benjamin's Captain of the Guards Balsamilco Might's briefing of their plans for the succession contest before the contest begins.[1]

Benjamin orders his soldiers to act as Royal Guards

After leaving the departure ceremony on the first day of the voyage, Benjamin orders his fourteen private soldiers to act as bodyguards to all the other Princes and to report any information regarding the Princes' Guardian Spirit Beasts and the Hunters' abilities back to him.[5] Butch stands guard near 5th Prince Tubeppa in her room as Maor, the Captain of Tubeppa's guards, notifies her that he is heading to Room 1014, and shortly after receives a transmission from Babimyna that he is on duty.[2]

In Room 1014 during Nen classes on the ninth day of the voyage, Babimyna and Furykov discuss Babimyna swapping assigned Princes with Rihan and mention that Rihan had been assigned to Tubeppa's guard to monitor her after the death of his former assignment 8th Prince Salé-salé, implying that he had taken over Butch's assignment.[3]

On the eleventh day of the voyage, Butch is seen guarding the hallway to Benjamin's residence in the VVIP area. As part of the Ministry of Justice, Kaiser had come with a group to escort 11th Prince Fugetsu and be witness to her delivery of a letter that Butch understands her sister 10th Prince Kacho had written to be passed to Benjamin in the event of her death. Butch initially offers to take it to Benjamin for Kaiser and Fugetsu, but Kaiser tells him that it could contain an official proclamation about the succession and that Butch handling the letter could be interpreted as him defying a dead Prince's wishes and disqualifying its contents. When Butch contacts Benjamin for instructions on what to do, he gets approval from Benjamin to let them in, and Butch also takes the chance to notify Benjamin of the spirits he observes haunting Fugetsu.[4]

Later, at 7:50 a.m. that day, Benjamin receives a call from Balsamilco informing him of the trial delay, Halkenburg's attempt at attacking him, and his request for permission to visit Halkenburg and execute his mission. Benjamin informs Butch that the rumbling they had felt was an attack on Balsamilco. He instructs Butch to let Tiers 2 and 3 know that he will declare martial law if Balsamilco leaves the Justice Bureau without notifying him. Shortly after, a guard enters Benjamin's residence in the VVIP area to notify him that an official from the Ministry of Justice and Fugetsu have something to personally give him.[7][note 1] Butch is seen once again standing guard outside Benjamin's residence in the VVIP area as Benjamin receives a call from Balsamilco notifying him of the arrangements requested for 9th Prince Halkenburg's funeral.[8]

Abilities & Powers[]

Butch has received military training.[5]

Nen[]

Butch is a Nen user, although his superior, Balsamilco, believes him to be less knowledgeable than Hunters in that regard.[9] He was able to see the low-level spirits surrounding Fugetsu when he saw her on the eleventh day of the voyage.[4]

Notes

  1. In Chapter 402, Butch was shown receiving Fugetsu and Kaiser for them to pass Benjamin a letter, notifying him of it, and receiving instructions to let them in. but in Chapter 403, a yet-unnamed guard (not seen in Chapter 402) does the same and also receives instructions to let them in, while Butch receives other instructions in the VVIP area with Benjamin. It is unclear why two guards appeared to notify Benjamin of the letter and why Butch was seemingly both outside Benjamin's residence in the VVIP area when Fugetsu and Kaiser first appeared and inside Benjamin's residence in the VVIP area when they appeared.
