Chap 380 - Cha-R Family base

The Cha-R Family's base

About 250 members[3] of the Cha-R Family boarded the Black Whale to secure territory on the New Continent. Brocco Li, the Cha-R boss, is a VIP on Tier 1 of the ship. The underlings are scheming to whittle down the numbers of their two rival families, Xi-Yu and Heil-Ly.[2] The Cha-R family control Tier 5 and all its commodities.[1]

Chap 377 - Cha-R group

The group arrives

In Tier 5's central dining hall, the Phantom Troupe discuss their search for Hisoka when a group from the Cha-R Family approaches them, requesting they leave, but Chrollo Lucilfer refuses. A Cha-R family member thanks the Spiders for their actions in Yorknew City, which subsequently allowed the Kakin Mafia families to get exclusive rights to the New Continent, and once again asks them to leave, this time offering to help them with whatever they were doing on the ship. This time, Chrollo agrees, and the Phantom Troupe prepares to leave. Chrollo gives a loose description of Hisoka to the Cha-R family member, who offers to check the Royal Army's passenger list but also lets Chrollo know that Hisoka may be an unofficial passenger. The Cha-R family member allows the Phantom Troupe to search Tier 5 for Hisoka and extends an offer for them to join the Cha-R in exchange for access to the otherwise-restricted Tiers 3 and 4. Chrollo politely declines their offer, but instead asks about how to gain access to Tiers 1. The Cha-R family member changes his tone and asks the Phantom Troupe to leave again. As he watches the Phantom Troupe leave, his underling Sun-bin warns him about the danger they pose. He asks Sun-bin to contact their Underboss and inform him about the presence of the Phantom Troupe.[4] After a phone call with Xi-Yu boss Onior, Brocco orders his Underboss Ken'i to find Hisoka before the Phantom Troupe. Ken'i directs his men to offer money in exchange for Hisoka's location.[1]

Two Cha-R members play cards as they guard the Tier 5 warehouse, watched by another two Cha-R members. One of the Cha-R members watching them play notices Nobunaga, Phinks, and Feitan approaching to recover their items and welcomes them, having been told to expect them. He leads them into the warehouse to their items but suddenly vanishes after turning a corner into a dead end. He is killed by a mysterious assassin, and his bleeding corpse reappears behind the Phantom Troupe members. The two card-playing members of the Cha-R family are killed by Luini in an unknown room.[note 1][1] Ken'i heads to the Cha-R family hideout and sees the Phantom Troupe members, who had followed a blood trail from the warehouse entrance to the family hideout.[5]

Back in Tier 5's central dining hall, Cha-R consigliere Ittoku speaks to Franklin after getting a call notifying him of the disappearance of the warehouse guards. Franklin says that the Phantom Troupe was unlikely to be behind the matter, and explains that they did not plan to take action against anyone unless provoked until they killed Hisoka.[5]

Ken'i gets a call explaining that a man had appeared at the Cha-R hideout carrying an injured warehouse guard and was let in by an associate. He shares the information with the Phantom Troupe members, and Phinks suggests that the man did it to get inside the hideout to fulfill the conditions for a teleportation ability. Ken'i observes the Phantom Troupe members' confidence in their strength and ability to deal with any consequences of sharing information. He decides that they are too risky to keep around and decides to eventually eliminate them. Ken'i proposes working together with them.[5]

The Phantom Troupe accepts, and Ken'i welcomes them into their family office. They head to the monitor room and watch the recording of when the injured Cha-R member was let in. They see the man who had brought him trying to gain access to a locked door, but leave after being unable to, successfully hiding his face from the cameras the whole time. Nobunaga suggests that he is likely to return to try and open the locked door, and offers to kill the assassin in exchange for seeing what's behind. Ken'i agrees and informs Tsudonke that Nobunaga, Phinks, and Feitan will join the Cha-R on their shifts.[3]

Chap 384 - Spiders and Cha-R

Tajao discusses Morena with the Spiders

Over the next few days, over three hundred workers would go missing, including eight Cha-R members. At 10:30 pm on the seventh day (Saturday), Ken'i and Cha-R Vice Boss Tajao head to the Cha-R family hideout. On the way, Ken'i brings up the lack of results by the Kakin Royal Army in finding the serial killer and how it would make them soon suspect the involvement of the Mafia. Tajao and Ken'i step through the locked door Luini wanted access to. Inside the family hideout, Ken'i introduces the Phantom Troupe members to Tajao and explains their temporary collaboration. Phinks explains to Tajao that they are waiting around as part of their offer to kill the killer of the Cha-R warehouse guards, in exchange for help accessing Tier 4 to search for Hisoka. To ensure the Phantom Troupe did not accidentally instigate a war between Kakin's three main Mafia families, Tajao explains a code of conduct that the Kakin Mafia families followed, and how Morena might have been trying to instigate a war. Tajao explains that the Phantom Troupe might start and be dragged into the war if they randomly killed the assassin, interfering with their search for Hisoka.[6]

On Tier 3, Tsudonke approaches a shop for information on the fight between a Xi-Yu man and a civilian at Area E. He rejoins Ken'i and some other Cha-R members in their search for Hisoka on Tier 3. Ken'i decides to head over to Area E with some of his underlings and tells Tsudonke and the rest to return to their family hideout and report their findings to the Phantom Troupe. Ken'i mentally reviews the actions of Nobunaga, Phinks, and Feitan over the past few days, considers how best to deal with them, and concludes that the best way to proceed would be to find Hisoka so they could use him to crush both the Heil-Ly and the Phantom Troupe. He tells the remaining Cha-R members to prioritize securing Hisoka so he can negotiate with him to have the Heil-Ly and the Phantom Troupe attack each other.[7]

Back at the Cha-R family hideout, a knock on the door has a Cha-R family member call the Phantom Troupe into the monitor room to watch the cameras, which show an arm sticking out of a hole in the wall and knocking on the door. Phinks reopens the door from the monitor room to the family hideout to find the remaining Cha-R members vanished. Nobunaga tells the Cha-R member monitoring the cameras to lock himself in the monitor room. When the monitor room door is closed, Luini opens a hole in the locked door he earlier marked, confronting the Phantom Troupe members. Luini sticks his torso through the hole he opened and shares his plan for the Phantom Troupe to work together with the Heil-Ly and rampage through the world, but Nobunaga quickly stabs him in the head. Luini's death closes his portal and severs his body in half. Nobunaga provides his body to Tsudonke and the rest of the returning search party. Having fulfilled their promise to the Cha-R, Nobunaga declares their intent to crush the Heil-Ly as they head out to resume searching for Hisoka.[8]

In Area E, Ken'i sees Corporal Maizan waiting around and asks him what his plan with Hinrigh is, suspecting him of collusion since standing guard is below a corporal's pay grade. Maizan extends his offer of the Heil-Ly's secret hideout's location to Ken'i, who accepts. Hinrigh appears, and the group makes their way to Room 3101. Ken'i and Hinrigh hide in the hallway as Maizan makes him way into the room, but stop when they notice his sudden disappearance. A Xi-Yu underling steps into the room to retrieve a knife thrown by Hinrigh, but is teleported away and killed. After confirming the existence of the trap, Ken'i tells Hinrigh to let the Phantom Troupe deal with the trap.[8]

Kakin Royal Army Corporal Gipper and his underlings break into a Mafia family base and find the body of a Cha-R member.[8]

In an office, Ken'i and his underlings meet with Gipper's underlings and Hinrigh to share information. He decides to try to capture the pair Hinrigh found alive. Hinrigh asks about how the Phantom Troupe would approach the trap, having an idea to help find the Heil-Ly secret base, and Ken'i accompanies him back to Room 3101. In Room 3101, Ken'i introduces Hinrigh to Nobunaga, Phinks, and Feitan.[9]

Trivia[]

  • Taken together, the katakana of the three Mafia families form "Shūeisha", the company responsible for the publication of Weekly Shōnen Jump and of Hunter × Hunter.
  • The crest bears a resemblance to the kanji for "to shoot" (射), which can be pronounced like the first part of the family's name ("sha").
  • At least four of the members of the Cha-R family seen thus far sport the tattoo of a rose.[4]
