The Inevitable Outcome (当(とう)然(ぜん)()()()()()()()()の結(けっ)果(か)()()()()()()()(), Tōzen no Kekka) is the 11^th chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis

Buhara continues to devour the roasted Great Stamps before eventually becoming full and leaving a tall stack of bones behind him. Menchi strikes a gong to mark the moment, and the examinees can't believe that Buhara was able to eat 70 roast pigs. Gon is impressed by how amazing Hunters are, and the other examinees are left confused by how Buhara ate more food than he can hold, with Leorio telling them not to think about it too much. Menchi can't believe that he just ate them all without judging the food's quality. However, Buhara happily replies that his stomach was really empty, adding that they were still able to reduce the number of examinees. Mechi stresses to him that Gourmet Hunters should have extraordinary taste buds, proceeding to strike the gong again and announcing that 70 examinees have passed the roast pig round.

Still crouching high up in a nearby tree, Satotz is impressed that 70 were able to pass since a strike to a Great Stamp's forehead requires precision, bravery, quick-thinking, and athleticism. However, he realizes that Menchi's test will be even more difficult since she is tough to please. It's then stated that as a Gourmet Hunter, Menchi is one of the world's most prominent chefs and demands the most from every dish she tastes. It's added that her contributions to the culinary world have earned her the title of Single-Star Hunter (which requires notable achievements in a single field) at the age of 21. Menchi warns the examinees that she will be a harsh judge compared to Buhara and announces that her dish for part two of the Second Phase will be sushi.

Nearly all the examinees have no clue what sushi is and anxiously wonder how they're supposed to make it. Menchi chuckles at their confusion and explains that the dish comes from a small island country. She then reveals elaborate sushi stations for every examinee, explaining that they have all the tools they need and that the key ingredient—rice—has already been cooked for them. She adds that she prefers nigiri sushi, which is hand-pressed, and reminds them that the test will be over once her appetite has been satiated.

The confused examinees look over the various tools, and Gon wonders if they need to make rice balls, but Killua holds up a knife and guesses that there's more to it. As the others try to figure it out, Hanzo chuckles to himself and proudly says that it's his country Menchi mentioned. However, he quickly realizes that he can't appear too happy and that he has to seem like he's also struggling. As he sees another examinee trying to mold the rice with his hands, Hanzo tries to contain his laughter, but several of the examinees immediately realize that he knows how to make it. Leorio tries to work out the details, and Kurapika then says that he remembers reading about the dish, believing that it involves rice mixed with vinegar and is combined with raw fish.

As Leorio wonders aloud how they will find fish in a forest, Kurapika throws one of the tools at him and tells him to be quiet, pointing out that forests have sources of water. The other examinees overhear Leorio's mention of fish and immediately run toward the forest, with Leorio upset that they overheard them and Kurapika angry that he was so loud. After using various means to catch fish in the nearby rivers and ponds, the examinees return to their stations and wonder how to prepare it. Buhara chuckles and tells Menchi that she's mean since the examinees are stuck with freshwater fish when proper sushi requires fish from the sea. Menchi happily replies that it will make the test interesting and that she's eager to see their creations, adding that she is more of a chef than an examiner. Buhara is left unsure about Menchi's decision and worries that it may not turn out well.

Leorio uses the ingredients that Kurapika remembered and confidently presents his dish as the "Leorio Special", opening the lid to reveal a big ball of rice with multiple living fish sticking out of it. Menchi immediately tosses the plate over her head and stresses that the shape is essential to nigiri sushi. Gon then presents his dish, a live fish with rice covering the center, and Menchi tosses it away as well. Three other examinees fail to get it right, and Menchi angrily asks if they plan to starve her, wondering to herself how they can't figure it out after all the hints she has given. Kurapika begins to analyze Menchi’s statement about the shape and making as many as they like, deducing that it involves the two sticks being used as utensils and the small dish of condiment.

Kurapika guesses that a single sushi can only be so big and presents his dish, which looks very similar to Gon's, and Menchi tosses it away as well, angrily calling the examinees hopeless and saying that they have no skills or style. A chuckling Hanzo approaches her and reveals his dish, whose appearance Menchi approves. However, when she takes a bite of it, she tells Hanzo that it's no good, leaving him enraged as he explains that sushi is just rice formed into a bite-sized shape and then wasabi and fish are added. Hanzo realizes that he just said the explanation in front of the other examinees, who realize how simple it is. However, Menchi angrily replies that it takes 10 years of training to start making proper sushi, grabbing Hanzo by the collar and telling him that he doesn't have what it takes.

Buhara realizes that Menchi has reached the point where she loses all perspective, adding that only a few chefs in the world can meet her standards. Menchi states that she is even hungrier after all the yelling, and the other examinees eagerly present their dishes. Menchi realizes that she will have to test by taste now that they all know what to do, but she continues to reject their dishes. Buhara tells her that she is being too picky, but Menchi remains stubborn and points out the smallest details that are wrong. She then takes a sip from her drink and suddenly says that she's full, with the examinees realizing that she didn't pass a single one of them.
