September 10th: Part 2 (9
Synopsis[]
At Battera's tryouts, an announcer tells the applicants that players will be chosen for six cartridges, adding that they all have paid the 12 million and reminding them that they need to know Nen to play the game. He introduces Tsezguerra as the judge, who tells them that they will come up one at a time and show him their Ren behind shutters and a curtain. After he tells them that he will end the tryouts once they reach a maximum of 32 people, the curtain closes and many of the applicants rush to form a line.
Killua stays seated and analyzes the situation in extreme detail, noting that 100 are waiting in line, around 50 are clustering around the line, and about 20 are staying in their seats. He sees ten applicants go behind the curtain and worries that he and Gon should maybe join the line. One of the applicants, however, begins talking with the two boys and tells them that the ones waiting around the line won't make it. Killua eventually realizes that it's not "first-come, first-served," and the man says that while Battera has 32 slots available, he will inevitably leave open slots in case more talented applicants show up. He guesses that only around 20 people will be chosen for now, and the ones with any chance either lined up first or remained in their seats. Gon had guessed as much and expected that they would allow everyone to be interviewed, and the man commends Gon's logic, introducing himself as Puhat before going up to the stage.
Killua realizes that the man is right, telling himself that he needs to take chances in order to advance. Gon wishes him good luck, and Killua goes behind the curtain and shutters, remembering his father's words about not overreaching his limits and staying patient until he knows for sure that he can make the kill.
As Tsezguerra asks him to show his Ren, Killua tells himself that he's not an assassin anymore, but a (self-proclaimed) Hunter. He asks if he can show his Hatsu instead, and Tsezguerra says of course, explaining that "show me your Ren" is a code among Hunters to display the results of one's training and what they're capable of. All of a sudden, lightning arcs between Killua's hands, and he directs it toward the floor. Tsezguerra doesn't need to see anymore and quickly passes him, in disbelief that he learned it in only four days. He confronts Killua about it, saying that he would have needed to be exposed to electric shocks for years to endure it, and Killua casually explains that because of family circumstances, he has been since he was a baby.
