The Reason for the Recruitment (
Synopsis[]
Nickes wants to introduce Gon and Killua to his group, but Killua thinks the offer sounds too good and tells Gon they should reject it. Before the two can leave, Nickes brings up the fact that Killua was affected by a spell from another player. Killua asks if he has been watching them, and Nickes says that his job is surveillance and recruitment. He says that he will tell them why people keep watch on the Starting Point as well as more about the spell used to attack Killua if they at least agree to hear their pitch. He stresses the difficulty and brutality of the game and says that they would find the information worthwhile since they're new players.
Killua asks why he thinks that they're new, saying that although they came from the Starting Point, they could have just been coming back after leaving. Nickes offers them a demonstration by quickly summoning his book, which causes Gon and Killua to jump back. Nickes explains that experienced players immediately take out their own books once someone else does, stressing that only spells can defend against other spells. He adds that even if they don't have any cards, they should take out their books since bluffing is an important strategy. He once again asks them to hear him out, and Gon convinces Killua that it's worth doing.
Nickes takes the two to the town's plaza and meets up with the rest of his group, who have invited three other new players. Nickes tells the others that a player they arrived with was just killed, saying that the two boys saw him and that it was the work of the Bomber. One member with glasses from Nickes' group explains that of the 40 spell cards in the game, none of them do any harm or kill. He explains that the spells cast on them were either "Trace" or "Cling", allowing another player to know their current location and what cards they have in their book. He explains that some players keep an eye on the Starting Point and cast these spells on new players, waiting until they get a valuable card and then coming to take it from them. He continues by saying that there are at least four players going around hunting and killing other players, and the one known as the Bomber (who they believe to be an Emitter or Manipulator) is responsible for the latest one. Lastly, he says that the game came out more than 10 years ago, and the situation is getting worse.
Another member from Nickes' group asks the new players for the three main categories to getting item cards. Gon says to find them yourself, another player says to trade them with others, and Killua says to take them from others. The member continues by saying that more and more players have been using the third way because of acquisition difficulty and the card conversion limit, attacking other players until they take out their books and killing those who refuse. He says that they won't be able to get their cards if a player dies, but more items will be able to be converted. After Killua uses an example to explain it Gon, Nickes speaks up and promises to put an end to the killings by using strategy, asking for their help.
Puhat asks which of the ways to get cards they use, and Nickes says the third one, but stresses that they don't use violence when taking cards. He explains that there are offensive and defensive spells, and their plan involves monopolizing these cards and using the conversion limit to their advantage. He says that they need 1900 spell cards for a monopoly, needing at least 45 people to store them in their free slots while others monitor, recruit, and collect cards. He adds that they currently have 53 people (70 would be ideal) and around 800 spell cards. The member with glasses says that they currently have 67 unique specified slot cards (70% of total cards if they combine all of them). The other member says that they started five years ago and struggled at first, but their members and cards have doubled recently, adding that they plan to go on the offensive once they reach 1300 cards. Another member says that this is the last time they will recruit for more members since they should be able to collect all the cards in a month once they have enough to go on the offensive. After their extensive appeal, Nickes asks the new players whether they will join.
