A Game at Midnight: Part 2 (()()(なか)()()()()()()()のゲーム②, Mayonaka no Gēmu (Ni)) is the 14th chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis[]

Sweating and breathing heavily, Gon watches as Killua struggles to take the ball away from Netero, who eventually says that the game is getting boring and tells the two boys to attack him at the same time. With Killua angry and Gon determined, the two boys charge forward and try their best to get a hold of the ball. Netero continues to evade them easily, and the two can't believe that he's so calm while thwarting all their tactics. As Netero criticizes their attacks, Gon unleashes a strong kick that Netero seems to dodge, but Gon kicks off his boot to strike Netero in the face as Killua lands a kick to the back of his head.

Chap 14 - Netero using his speed against Gon and Killua

Netero using his speed against Gon and Killua

With Netero falling forward, Killua happily reaches out to take the ball, but the Chairman suddenly kicks it up into the air and reaches out to grab it. Gon then cleverly kicks off his other boot to send the ball even further away, with the two boys running forward and thinking that they will win. However, Netero quickly dashes forward and flies right between them, picking up the ball and leaving the two in disbelief. Netero praises their effort, and after seeing that the floor was cracked by his launch, Killua finally gives up and tells Netero that he wins. Gon wonders why he's quitting and points out how close they were, but Killua observantly notes that Netero still hasn't used his right hand or left leg, guessing that they wouldn't get the ball away from him even after a year of trying.

With Gon left stunned, Netero says that he was trying not to make it obvious, and Killua pretends to laugh before telling Gon that it's time for them to leave. However, Gon says that he will keep trying, and Killua angrily reminds him that it's pointless. While Gon agrees with him, he adds that he still has time to force Netero to use his right hand. Killua is left surprised and tells Gon to have fun before taking his leave. Gon then asks Netero how Killua was able to use "Rhythm Echo", and Netero explains that it's an advanced technique used mostly by criminals, telling Gon that someone as nice as him shouldn't learn it. Gon finds it impressive and calls Killua amazing, with Netero noting how well he has mastered the technique. Facing away from Netero, who juggles the ball in his left hand, Gon quickly turns around and tries to grab it, but Netero lifts it up and praises his sly attempt. Netero then begins to run away as Gon chases after him, telling the boy that mentioning his right hand was a good attempt at misdirection.

Chap 14 - Killua taking out his frustrations on two examinees

Killua taking out his frustrations on two examinees

Killua walks shirtless down one of the airship's corridors, sulking and upset after his failed attempts at winning the game. He then bumps into two other examinees and continues walking past them. One notes how sweaty he is, and the other can't believe Killua's manners, trying to get his attention and reaching out to touch his shoulder. However, Killua suddenly kills them both by somehow slicing off their heads. He then smiles and tells himself that if he had kept playing the game, he would have wanted the ball enough to kill for it. Back in the training room, Netero watches Gon carefully and continues to evade all of his attacks. Gon then pretends to reach his hand out, but charges right toward Netero, who recognizes the feint and that Gon is planning to use a headbutt. Gon unleashes the strike on Netero's midsection, but Netero is left unfazed and Gon recovers from the painful contact before leaping forward for another attempt.

Netero tells himself that while hardening his abs again would split Gon's head open, relaxing them would also be a bad idea. He decides to simply leap into the air and dodge the strike, pushing Gon off to the side. Gon's head strikes the wall, and Netero hopes that he is okay. Gon quickly sits up with a big smile on his face, happily pointing out that Netero used his right hand. After Netero realizes it, an exhausted Gon lets out a cheer before collapsing and immediately falling asleep, with Netero saying that Gon is as happy as if he had won. The Chairman then calls the captain of the airship and is happy to hear that things are on schedule, but asks him to slow down the ship somewhat.

Chap 14 - The examinees arriving at Trick Tower

The examinees arriving at Trick Tower

Kurapika and Leorio are shown still sleeping as Hisoka and Killua both sit awake. As Gon continues to sleep with a bandage now on his forehead, Netero lifts two small weights. After some time passes, an announcement is made over the intercom that they have reached their destination, with Kurapika and Leorio quickly looking out the window. They see an enormous tower in the distance, and the airship eventually lands on top of it before all the examinees leave the vessel. Bourbon notes that they are in the middle of nowhere, and another examinee wonders what will happen next. The small official addresses the group and explains that they are at the top of Trick Tower, welcoming them to the exam's Third Phase. He adds that the phase's examiners have told him that they have 72 hours to reach the bottom of the tower alive. Inside the tower, the three examiners are seen together as they prepare for the upcoming test.
