The Exam Begins (()(けん)(かい)()()()()()()(), Shiken Kaishi) is the 148th chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis[]

Gon practices Emission by forming a small ball of aura above his fingertip. Biscuit tells him that it's been a minute and he can go. Gon raises his fingertip to the ball of aura and flings it away from himself toward a rock in the distance, but he loses control and it dissipates before it can reach. Biscuit says that it's fine and tells him that he's better at it than transmuting, saying to herself that he seems to be an Enhancer who leans toward Emission. She advises Gon to have patience and focus on maintaining the shape of the discharged aura. She adds that the time he can keep the ball afloat is proportional to his Ten's strength, assuring him that he will be able to keep it floating for a few days once he gets accustomed to it. She predicts that Gon will be able to reach the rock within the day, but while she is speaking, Gon quickly flings the ball of aura, and it reaches the target. Biscuit thinks that it's proof that he has been practicing Ten and Ren every day.

Chap 148 - Gon practicing the basics

Gon practicing the basics

Biscuit then has Gon return to the basics, watching him as he uses Ren and throws a Ko punch. After she praises his progress and says that he is on schedule, Gon says that he will be able to practice all he wants in the wide-open space since they can tell when someone comes within range to cast any spells. However, he still feels that someone is watching them from Masadora, but he doesn't worry too much since they bought enough defensive spells. Biscuit agrees and says that the "Blackout Curtain" they cast should be enough, adding that no one has tried yet to use "Fluoroscopy" or "Peek" to breakthrough. She then tells Gon to go back to practicing, while she looks through her book and wonders how much a certain card would make them if they sold it.

Meanwhile, the Kiriko (disguised as humans) lead Killua to the Hunter Exam site at Beeskafmarro. Killua thanks the two, and they tell him to head to a specific apartment (503) and to ask on the intercom, "Does Michael live here?" Killua does so, and the person on the intercom says that he's in 603. He meets Michael, who gives him a card and tells him to use it to buy something at the Diksakura by the station. The cashier directs Killua to a door, and he goes inside an elevator to head down to the exam site where hundreds of people are already waiting.

As Killua looks around, he says to himself that there are more people than last year. He begins to look for anyone he knows, and Tonpa is seen sneaking away carrying two cans of juice. The Amori Brothers confront Killua, and Amori asks him about failing last year, saying that they still remember what he did to them. Imori is confident that things will go differently, and as Amori starts to talk about how hard the three of them have been working, Killua just ignores them and continues looking around for anyone he knows.

Chap 148 - The First Phase examiner welcoming the examinees

The First Phase examiner welcoming the examinees

A door opens, and the First Phase examiner comes out, welcoming them and announcing that 1,489 people entered this year and that the second phase examiner has asked him to cut the number down to 300. In addition to the Amori Brothers and Tonpa, Kyu, Ponzu, Todo, Sommy, Kenmi, and Zepile are seen listening to the examiner, who says that he didn't expect so many and wonders what sort of test he should give them.

As the examinees wait in anticipation, he asks first them if they want to fight it out and then says that in the two hours before lunch, they need to knock out five people and bring him their badges. He adds that he will wait in the stairwell, and once the door closes, the test will begin. Everyone readies their weapons, and when the examiner shuts the door behind him, fighting quickly breaks out in the main room. The examiner lights a cigarette and guesses that 150-200 will pass since there will inevitably be double KOs. He adds that all exams should have this phase since Hunters need to be strong.

As Zepile lies unconscious on the ground, the future Zepile narrates what happened and says that it seemed like a shadow was moving through the crowd and causing people to collapse. He says that he didn't realize it was Killua at first until Killua asked him about trying out and said that he (Killua) would be the only one to pass, which caused Zepile to panic. He adds that his doctor told him that the strike to his neck was precise and quick, with a martial artist telling him that it was a superhuman feat.

All three Amori Brothers lie knocked out as well, with Amori lamenting how confident they were and recounting all the effort they had put into their training. He realizes that they failed to consider the existence of prodigies they couldn't even imagine, describing Killua as someone born to be a first-rate Hunter. He describes just how wide the gap is and says that it will be their last year trying out, confident that others will choose the same path after what happened.

Killua asking the examiner if he still wants to do a second phase

The examiner has nodded off and wakes up when Killua opens the door. The examiner is happy to see the first person complete the test, but checks his watch and realizes that an hour and a half has passed. Confused, he asks what the others are doing, and Killua replies that they are all asleep, dragging behind him a bag full of the other 1,488 badges and saying that it took a while to collect them all. The two go back out to the main room, and Killua says that he doubts anyone will wake up before tomorrow, smiling as he asks the examiner if he still wants to hold a second phase.

The examiner contacts Netero, who laughs and says that there's no need since Killua has already shown his skill. After hanging up, Netero says that he is impressed by Killua's growth and maturation. The examiner announces that Killua, examinee 1219, is the only one to pass the 288th Hunter Exam. Killua thanks him and happily makes his way back to Greed Island.
