Enter the Taskmasters (
Synopsis[]
With 69 hours and 17 minutes left to reach the bottom of Trick Tower alive, the five examinees prepare to set out. Once Tonpa puts on his wrist timer and causes a door to appear, both Kurapika and Leorio realize that it was programmed to happen the moment all five timers were put on. Tonpa takes charge of the group, and Leorio wonders who made him the leader. The five see that the door requires them to vote on whether they want to open it or not, and Leorio is surprised that they have to agree already, saying that the choice is obvious. The door opens after they cast their votes, but it's revealed that one person voted no, with Leorio asking if the person wants to speak up. Tonpa playfully apologizes and explains that his finger must have slipped, which causes Leorio to happily forgive him before angrily telling him not to let it happen again.
Gon tells him that the door is open, but Leorio stresses that they all need to work together, mocking Tonpa's excuse that his finger slipped. Kurapika tells him that they are wasting time, and Killua points out that it doesn't matter if Tonpa wants to be in the minority since they have the majority of the votes. After Leorio glares at Tonpa and agrees to move on, the five examinees quickly find themselves in another locked room, now asked whether they want to go right or left. Leorio votes left and says that the process could become monotonous, and Kurapika agrees that it will if they have to vote every couple of feet. Three of them vote to go right, two to go left, and Leorio can't believe it, angrily pointing out that it's important to go left in a maze and that going right makes him nervous.
However, Kurapika counters by saying that according to research, people who are lost tend to unconsciously go left, with Killua adding that he has also heard of it. Leorio scoffs at the research and asks which direction they chose, with both saying right. Tonpa agrees with their reasoning and says that the examiners may know the rule as well, possibly using it to trip up naive examinees. After Leorio tries to bond with Gon over their votes, the five move forward and find themselves in a large room with a small stone platform in the center. Killua quickly points out the shrouded figures waiting on the other side, and one of the prisoners looks at the camera above them, saying that the examinees have arrived and asking that his handcuffs be unlocked.
After the restraints fall to the floor and the man removes the shroud from his head, he addresses the examinees and explains that the committee has chosen them as their taskmasters, adding that the five of them will challenge the five prisoners. He continues by saying that the fights will be one-on-one and they can only fight once, telling them to choose their order and adding that they will pass if they win a majority of the matches. The prisoner also reveals that they can fight however they want and that there will be no draws, with the winner being declared once an opponent admits defeat. He tells the examinees to vote on whether they want to compete or not, and while Leorio can't believe that they have to vote again, he tells the group that they should make sure the vote is unanimous, glaring at Tonpa who quickly agrees with his assessment.
All five examinees vote yes, and Leorio eagerly yells over that they accept the challenge. The prisoner agrees to go first and tells them to choose their fighter. Tonpa unexpectedly steps forward and explains that he will take the opportunity to see what their opponents are capable of. He adds that since he has given them reasons not to trust him, he will make sure that he gets his match out of the way so things don't depend on him winning if they have to go to a tiebreaker. Thin walkways extend from both sides of the arena, and the prisoner tells the examinees that only the contender can make his way to the platform. After Tonpa looks nervously at the pit below him, he makes his way onto the platform and stands opposite the prisoner, who proposes that they fight until one of them either admits defeat or dies. Tonpa eventually agrees to the deal, and Leorio is left stunned by his choice.
After telling Tonpa that he respects his determination, the prisoner suddenly lunges toward him to attack, but Tonpa immediately falls to his hands and knees, surrendering and admitting that he has been beaten. The other four can't believe how quickly Tonpa gave up and wonder if he's trying to trick the prisoner, who asks Tonpa to repeat what he said. Tonpa embarrassingly says that he has been beaten, causing Leorio to glare in anger and the prisoner to chuckle as he returns to his side of the arena. He explains that their side only needs two more wins before they fail the exam, asking them if they still want to continue. Tonpa returns to his side and explains that the prisoner looked a lot more imposing up close. Leorio quickly grabs him by the collar and rebukes him for messing with others and enjoying it. Tonpa smugly admits to it and asks what he plans to do about it. As the two continue to quarrel, another prisoner chuckles at the examinees fighting among themselves and realizes how easily they can win now. Tonpa then reveals to the others that he has no interest in becoming a Hunter.
