Knuckle walks towards the two boys and observes them closely, his powerful Nen stopping them in their tracks. He points out that before a fight, a person should be rested and fresh, not completely exhausted like the two are. He angrily states that they shouldn't look down on him. As he leans forward, Killua and Gon realize that there are tears in his eyes. They point it out to him, and he gets flustered, explaining that those are just tears of happiness. He then yells at them to hit him, as it would show how much of a difference in power there was between them, since he wouldn't even have to dodge their punches. He states that even if the two combined their strengths, they still wouldn't be able to move him even an inch.

Knuckle walks towards the two boys and looms over them, unable to believe that his superiors think he's no better than two kids. His overwhelming presence terrifies Killua, who wants to attack but can't move an inch. Knuckle lectures the two on how dangerous duels are, saying that it's best to fight five hours after a good night's sleep, not when they're exhausted. He wonders if the two of them are even taking things seriously, leaning in and declaring that he would never lose to them.

But Gon and Killua suddenly see that Knuckle has tears in his eyes, pointing it out to him, but Knuckle quickly denies it and covers his face, saying that it's from laughing too hard as he threatens to kill the two if they tell anyone. He turns away to wipe away the tears, but quickly turns back around and yells at them to hit him, explaining that it will illustrate the difference in power between them. He adds that he doesn't even need to dodge their weak punches, saying that they can hit him until they're satisfied, but telling them that if he doesn't budge an inch, they have to give up their tiles.
Gon, although realizing that what Knuckle was saying is the truth, still refuses to give up until he moves the man. Saying that, he begins to charge his Janken: Rock. Knuckle is surprised by the sudden increase in the output of Nen, and breaks into a cold sweat. Getting flustered and unable to decide which part of his body to defend, the Hunter collapses and loses consciousness.

Gon yells out against his insults, but internally admits that Knuckle's assessment is right, realizing that he can't overcome the situation with just willpower and thinking back to what happened with Kite. Knowing that he doesn't have anything to say in reply, Gon slowly approaches Knuckle and begins charging up Rock. Knuckle is confident at first, but the sudden increase in Gon's aura leaves him panicking. At first he thinks that he should guard with Gyo, but immediately switches it to Ko. He knows that he has to correctly guess which part of his body to defend or he could actually die. He begins to sweat profusely, finally deciding to defend his stomach since it's the most likely choice.
When Knuckle awakens, he finds himself in a bed, with Gon and Killua training in the same room. He sits up, admits that he underestimated them, and asks why they didn't take the plate from him. Gon replies that they didn't want the plate. Rather, they wanted to defeat him. The boy then asks Knuckle why he became a Beast Hunter, but he doesn't explain, saying that it is a long story and that he doesn't want to recall annoying memories. Gon further asks why he joined the Extermination Team, to which Knuckle replies that he didn't have any choice in the matter. He also adds that he knew that the two were good people since the moment he met them. Gon replies that it was the same for him as well. At this moment, the dog whom Knuckle had befriended appears from under his blanket, and Gon explains that it didn't leave him after he fell unconscious. He also adds that he was told that the best Hunters were always liked by animals.

After Gon throws the punch and sends him back several feet, Knuckle lies on the ground and tells Gon that he knew he could trust him, falling unconscious. Gon wonders what's with him, and Killua guesses that he's just a complete moron. Knuckle wakes up and finds himself at their hotel as Gon and Killua practice maintaining their Ren beside him. Knuckle admits that he underestimated Gon and realizes that he still has his half of the tile, asking Gon why he didn't just take it and leave him.
Later, during their meal, Knuckle agrees to be their opponent anytime.

Gon replies that it's not the tiles they want, but the ability to beat Knuckle in an honest fight. He then asks Knuckle why he became a Beast Hunter, but Knuckle says that it's a long and sad story. Gon then asks why he volunteered for the Extermination Team, and Knuckle reveals that he joined to not get them exterminated. He explains that he hates the blanket policy of getting rid of things, for which his master calls him naive, but he questions how they can decide until they see them in person and better understand them.

As Gon smiles and Killua thinks that Knuckle would be dead at that point, Knuckle says that Gon is a nice kid and that he could tell only after they fought. Gon feels the same about Knuckle and points him to something moving under his blanket. It's stated that one of the newly born Chimera Ant soldiers has a will of his own and subsequently rejected the Queen's orders. The man's human name was Gyro, and he was the kingpin of NGL, with his malevolence and determination being his two strongest attributes.
