The Last Question (
Synopsis[]
After 30 minutes, the five examinees eventually end up back inside the arena, and while Killua says that they obviously should have gone down, Leorio angrily points out that he also voted to go up. As the group runs away from a giant stone, it's stated that they had to endure trials such as a quiz with electric shocks and a life-sized backgammon board filled with mines and that they had less than one hour remaining even though they passed every challenge.
With the group now exhausted, they again reach a door that simply asks them if they want to open it. However, once Leorio sees that someone voted no, he immediately grabs Tonpa by the collar and angrily rebukes him for trying to sabotage the votes. Even though Leorio doesn't believe Tonpa when he replies that he voted yes, Gon speaks up and reveals that he was the one who pressed the wrong button by mistake. Although Leorio tries to walk away, Tonpa demands an apology from him, but Leorio quickly refuses. Tonpa then points out that he isn't the only one holding back the group, reminding Leorio that he lost them 50 hours of time. Kurapika tells them to stop, but the two continue to argue, with Leorio preparing to draw his switchblade and Tonpa readying his fists.
As Gon tells the two to calm down, Killua points out that the door is opening and tells them that they must be close to the exit. All five run forward and find an ominous statue hanging between two doors. Called "the Last Crossroad", it's said to be the last fork for the path, and the group is asked to vote if they are ready. Someone again votes no, but before Leorio can reprimand Tonpa, Kurapika angrily tells him that they don't have any time to waste.
A voice comes from the statue and explains to the examinees that one path is long and difficult, which the whole group can take, and that the other is short and easy, which only three of them can take. The voice adds that the long path will take them at least 45 hours, while the short one will take around three minutes. It's made clear that if they vote for the short path, two of them must be chained to the wall before the door will open and that those two won't complete the exam.
Leorio honestly tells the others that he plans to vote for the short route and that he isn't going to be chained to the wall, adamant that he is moving forward. With the others left speechless, he adds that the examiners planned ahead by placing weapons all around the room to help them settle the issue. However, Gon says that he will vote for the long path since it's only fair that they all pass, but Killua reminds him that they don't even have one hour left, checking his timer to see 57 minutes and 25 seconds. He agrees with Leorio's decision and says that they will have to fight it out.
At the bottom of Trick Tower, 18 examinees have passed the Third Phase with three minutes and 45 seconds remaining. Another examinee arrives, but he suddenly collapses and dies from his wounds. The Amori Brothers surround his body and say that he should have given up and tried next year. Another examinee arrives, and it's announced that there is one minute remaining. Hisoka is seen staring at the door as it opens and Gon, Killua, and Kurapika arrive. Killua says that his butt hurts, and Gon adds that he didn't expect the short path to be a slide.
Hisoka notes that there are only three, and it's announced that there are thirty seconds remaining. Gon is glad that they made it just in time, and as Kurapika looks at his blistered hands, Leorio and Tonpa suddenly arrive. Leorio calls it a long shot, but says that all five of them were able to make it because of the simple plan that only Gon considered. It's then revealed that all five voted for the long path and then destroyed a section of the wall in order to make their way into the short one. Kurapika comments on how effective the plan was, and Gon points out that since the taskmasters broke walls and floors with their bare hands, he guessed that they could use the weapons to do the same thing. Both Killua and Kurapika are silently impressed by Gon's quick-thinking and ingenuity.
Time finally runs out, and it's announced that 25 examinees (including one deceased) have passed the Third Phase. After the group makes their way outside the tower, Lippo greets and congratulates them. He reveals that the exam has two phases left and that the Fourth Phase will take place on Zevil Island, pointing to it in the distance. The other examiner then reveals a small box, and Lippo explains that they will all draw lots. With the examinees left wondering what it will decide, Lippo smiles and reveals that it will determine who they will hurt and who will hunt them.
