Chap 24 - Gon watching the encounter between Ryu and Pokkle

Gon watching the encounter between Ryu and Pokkle

In a forest on Zevil Island, Gon wonders how he will steal Hisoka's badge. He eventually makes his way up into a tree and thinks about Hisoka's massacre during the First Phase, remembering when he put his hand around his throat. As Gon realizes that Hisoka would easily beat him in a head-on fight, he suddenly sees Kyu in the grass below and then spots Pokkle stalking him. Ryu turns around and sees nothing, continuing on his way with a sword in his hand. Pokkle readies an arrow for his bow and releases it, but Ryu senses it and jumps to the side, with the arrow only grazing his right arm and Gon saying that Pokkle missed. As Ryu and Pokkle smile and chuckle at each other, Ryu begins to tremble and the sword falls from his hand, with the examinee soon collapsing. Pokkle explains that the drugged arrow will cause him to feel weak for days, assuring him that he will survive since there's water nearby. He then kneels down beside him and takes his #105 badge before happily walking away.

Gon is left impressed by the encounter and notes that while Ryu was able to dodge a serious wound, Pokkle had considered the possibility and made sure to drug the arrow. Gon then decides that he will take the same approach to steal Hisoka's badge: stalking him and then taking it before he can get him. Using his fishing rod, he practices striking targets with the hook and then pulling them back to himself. However, Gon quickly realizes that he needs to consider Hisoka's speed and agility, also noting that he doesn't have any drugs to knock him unconscious. He tells himself that his only plan is to sneak up on Hisoka and steal his badge with the hook. He then hangs a target from a tree branch and tries to strike it while it's swinging, but he quickly realizes that a pendulum isn't much different from a static target.

Now sitting on the ground, Gon spots a nearby frog and tries to strike it with the hook, but the creature quickly jumps away, with Gon understanding that it will be more difficult than he thought. Making sure to cover the sharp hooks, he then spots several birds and says that it will be the challenge closest to Hisoka. Gon swings his fishing rod and tries to strike one with the hook, but the creature easily avoids it. Although Gon tells himself that it was his first try, he's unable to find success as night falls. Lying exhausted on the ground, Gon says that he didn't think it would be so difficult and decides to start again in the morning.

Even with a fresh start, Gon is still unable to strike any of the birds and says that doing so is impossible, again lying down on the ground. However, he suddenly sees one of the birds grab a fish from the nearby river. He then carefully watches another bird as it takes off from its branch toward a fish leaping out of the water to eat an insect and flies away after catching it. Gon watches yet another bird and when it takes off from its branch, he immediately swings his fishing rod and strikes the bird right as it catches the fish. Now smiling, Gon realizes that he has to strike his target the moment it attacks its prey.
