Synopsis[]
Komugi is seen arranging Gungi pieces to prepare for her match with the King. She is so glad that they can finally play again, remarking that playing in one's dreams isn't the same as in real life. She recounts when she was kidnapped, guessing that he was the one who saved her, but the King says it was his subordinates. He remembers his Royal Guards, feeling he didn't deserve their loyalty, and Komugi says she should thank them. The King tells her he will let them know, adding that he will join them soon.
Before they start their match, he recalls the time when Komugi first asked for his name, leaving him confused since he himself didn't know it at the time. But he finally reveals that his name is Meruem, at which point Komugi shows her gratefulness by bowing and calling him "Meruem-sama." She gives her own name, and he says he already knows it, but reflects that his former self knew nothing of what is actually important. She calls him Meruem-sama again, and he tells her there's no need for the honorific, insisting that she not make him repeat himself. He makes a bet with her: if he wins their match, Komugi must address him without the honorific. Komugi agrees and asks if he can wait and let her die until afterward. Meruem tells her he won't kill her now, since he is no longer the way he used to be, and playfully says she should ready herself for many losses. He asks her what she wants if she wins, and she quickly says another chance to play—an answer he knew was coming.
They start to play once again, playing various moves before Meruem notices that Komugi used "Kokoriko." He sternly asks her if she's mocking him, but she quickly says no and assures him she never messes around with Gungi. He crushes a piece in front of her and changes his mind, saying she can die after she loses. He thinks he can easily counter her move, but Komugi's response leaves him impressed. She begins to explain that she came up with the move the night before, but Meruem quickly silences her so he can think. He carefully considers his next move and plays something to counter her new tactic.
But as he looks over to her side, Komugi is shown sobbing, leaving Meruem confused. She asks him if she deserves to be this happy, adamant that she doesn't deserve so many wonderful things in her life since she's only good at one thing. Lowering his face, Meruem confesses to her that he's going to die soon because of poison. He states that during his last moments, he wanted to spend his remaining time playing Gungi with her. He adds that the poison is contagious, and if she stays with him for too long, she might be poisoned as well. But Komugi simply ignores this and continues playing, using another new move to counter the one that he had used to counter her own. She tells him she is beyond happy and asks him to let her accompany him in death. As he looks upon her smiling, tearful face, Meruem realizes he was meant to be here right now, that this was the moment for which he was born.
