Synopsis[]

Chap 35 - Gon waking up after his fight against Hanzo

Gon waking up after his fight against Hanzo

Gon suddenly wakes up lying in a bed with his broken arm in a cast and sling. Satotz sits near him reading a book and is glad to see that he's finally awake. Gon asks where the room is, and Satotz moves his chair closer to explain that it's the waiting room next to the exam hall. Gon remembers that he was fighting Hanzo, and Satotz assures him that his broken arm will not only heal but be stronger once it does. He then holds out his right hand for Gon to shake and congratulates him on his win against Hanzo. Gon doesn’t extend his hand and tries to say that he didn't actually win, but Satotz takes Gon's wrist and forces him to shake his hand, telling him that he can't change the results since his win has been declared valid.

However, Satotz tells Gon that he can throw away or hide his Hunter License if he believes that he doesn't deserve it. While he adds that Gon can also sell it for an extraordinary amount of money, he stresses that he can never retake the exam now that he has passed. He adds that current Hunters receive favorable treatment because of their numerous achievements and that individuals with evil intentions are driven to obtain a license as a result, explaining that it's the reason why the exam is so rigorous. Satotz then reveals Gon's license and stresses that while it's simply a piece of plastic, it's the most important thing for a professional Hunter, adding that what he accomplishes as a Hunter is more important than how he became one.

Chap 35 - Satotz giving Gon his Hunter License

Satotz giving Gon his Hunter License

Gon asks what kind of Hunter he is, and Satotz replies that he restores and preserves ruins. He explains that while he used to excavate for the fame, a certain other Hunter showed him what it really meant to be a Ruins Hunter, using his own money for restorations and public facilities that focused on preservation. He adds that the Hunter's system has been adopted across the world as the standard for archeological management. He then reveals that he has never met the Hunter, considering him his role model and determined to thank him if he ever does meet him. He tells Gon to visit the Lurka Ruins if he wants to see one of the man's achievements, and Gon perks up at the mention of them, happily saying that he will.

Satotz then gives Gon his license and tells him that he alone decides when he will use it. Gon replies that since he received help from many people along the way, he will be ready to use it once he returns all the favors he owes, stashing the license inside his cast. Satotz again congratulates Gon and shakes his hand. After happily thanking him, Gon suddenly remembers the tournament and wonders how it's going. However, Satotz reveals that it's already finished since Gon has been asleep for the whole day. With Gon left surprised, Satotz explains that the others who passed are at the post-exam lecture, which he can attend later.

Chap 35 - Gon learning that Killua failed the exam

Gon learning that Killua failed the exam

Gon wonders which one of the examinees failed, but before Satotz can answer, the scene returns to right after Hanzo knocked Gon unconscious. As Masta picks up Gon and carries him away, Hanzo warns the examiners that Gon may choose disqualification and end the final phase on a bad note, but Netero assures him that Gon has already passed and is no longer considered an examinee. He adds that even if Gon killed him, he would still be issued a license. As Hanzo walks past him, Killua suddenly asks him why he decided to lose, pointing out that there were multiple ways he could have forced Gon to surrender without killing him. Hanzo replies that he knows someone he tortures will despise him for it and that even a strong warrior can't hide his hatred and resentment toward his torturer. However, he reveals that when he looked into Gon's eyes even after breaking his arm, he saw no such emotions, guessing that none of it mattered to him and adding that he sort of likes him now.

As the second match between Kurapika and Hisoka begins, the scene returns to the present, and Gon learns that Killua was the one who failed, quickly asking why. Satotz replies that he broke the rules and reveals that he killed someone, leaving Gon shocked. With blood shown on Killua's face and right hand, Satotz explains that they didn't expect him to strike so viciously and quickly, with the examiners believing it was intentional. Gon wonders if it all happened while he was asleep, and Satotz agrees to explain everything, first revealing that Kurapika won his round against Hisoka, who whispered something to Kurapika after some fighting and then surrendered. In the third match, Hanzo easily subdued Pokkle and threatened to torture him as he had Gon, with Pokkle quickly surrendering.

Chap 35 - Killua recognizing Gittarackur's true appearance

In the fourth match, Hisoka dominated a stubborn Bodoro, who eventually surrendered after Hisoka whispered something to him. In the fifth match, Killua immediately surrendered to Pokkle and explained that he wanted to fight someone who was worthy. In the sixth match, Leorio requested that it be postponed because of Bodoro's injuries, and the request was granted. Satotz then reveals that the seventh match between Killua and Gittarackur was when the problem started. Gittarackur told Killua that it had been a while and addressed him as "Kil" before removing one of the needles from his ear. Killua was left shocked by the transformation and seemed to recognize Gittarackur's true appearance, calling him Illumi.
