Ging Freecss (ジン゠フリークス, Jin Furīkusu) is the 38th chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.
Synopsis[]
After the briefing, Netero tells the seven new Hunters that once they leave the building, they will be their equals, colleagues, and rivals. He finally tells them to take care until they meet again and dismisses them. As Illumi watches Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio leave, Hisoka asks him if he thinks it was wise to reveal the location of their house. Illumi replies that he doesn't care since they're so famous locally that it isn't much of a secret and that the three will understand the difference in ability once they arrive.
Hisoka then glances at his injured arm, and Illumi confirms that it was broken by Gon, saying that the boy intrigues him and understanding Hisoka's interest in his potential. As Illumi realizes how dangerous Gon could be to him and thinks about dealing with him, he turns around to find Hisoka glaring at him. Hisoka stresses that Gon is his and warns Illumi that he will die if he makes a move. Illumi immediately yields to him and says that he can guess his tastes even though he hasn't known him for long, asking what he plans to do next. Hisoka replies that he will wait until the fruit is ripe before he plucks it, taking pleasure at the thought as Illumi looks at him without saying another word.
Leorio wonders about Kukuroo Mountain and says that he's never heard of it, asking Kurapika if he has. Kurapika appears to be lost in thought, and Leorio reminds him that it's the mountain where Killua lives, asking if he has any idea where it is. Kurapika replies that while he doesn't, they can easily find out by doing some surfing. With Gon left confused by the term, Hanzo suddenly approaches the three and tells them that he's returning home, asking them to look him up if they ever visit his country. He promises to give them a serious tour with no traps and hands each of them his card that states he is a jonin who uses the Cloud-Hidden style, with the three noting how confident he is as a ninja.
After Hanzo takes his leave, Pokkle approaches the three and apologizes to Kurapika for his rudeness during the meeting. Kurapika criticizes his own behavior as well, and Pokkle tells him that he was annoyed because he was right, admitting that the end of the exam was very anticlimactic for him. He adds that he just needed to let out his emotions and that it's important what he does from now on with his Hunter License, stating that he plans to search the world for undocumented animals as a Beast Hunter and look for information on other things as well. He asks Gon if he needs anything, and Gon tells him that he's trying to find a Hunter named Ging, adding that any hint or rumor will help.
Pokkle puts Ging's name into a small tablet and asks Gon if he has a picture, scanning it after Gon hands it to him. He asks Kurapika and Leorio if they need anything, with the latter saying that they don't at the moment. Pokkle then gives them his home code in case they think of anything, with Kurapika and Leorio giving him theirs as well. However, when Pokkle asks for Gon's, Gon is left confused and embarrassingly asks what a home code is, leaving the other three surprised. Leorio apologizes to Gon since he forgot that he applied without knowing anything about hunting. He states that a home code allows them to access a system that's similar to an answering machine, explaining that since Hunters are often moving around constantly, it's important they can retrieve messages using a cell phone from wherever they are. He adds that it's important to keep messages short and simple with code words, as well as to only reveal crucial information in person.
Gon also wonders what the term "surfing" means, and Leorio tells him that it involves cyberspace, with Kurapika describing it as an electronic universal encyclopedia. They continue by explaining that someone can access all the information to be found on any computer in the world if they purchase their own phone line and registration number. They add that while much of the information is trivial and full of rumors, it's still a very useful source. Pokkle explains to Gon that looking up information is called "surfing" and then shows him a registration card. Leorio stresses that a home code, cell phone, and cyberspace registration are the three main tools of communication for a Hunter, telling Gon that he should definitely use all of them.
Kurapika then remembers that they can surf cyberspace using their license, and Pokkle also remembers that it was mentioned during the briefing, with Gon telling himself that he wasn't listening. Kurapika adds that cyberspace is also free to those with a license, asking Gon if he wants to try it out. However, Gon nervously declines and says that he doesn't want to use it yet. Leorio says that it's silly not to try, and Kurapika decides that he will use his own license. Pokkle gives Gon his home code and tells him to call him when he gets one, with Gon thanking him.
After Pokkle takes his leave, Leorio wonders if it's time for them to leave as well, but Gon spots Satotz walking down the hallway and gets his attention. Catching up to him, Gon pulls a card from his pocket and asks if he knows what it is, explaining that someone he knows dropped it and guessing that it's a Hunter License. After examining it, Satotz confirms that it's a license for a Double-Star Hunter, telling himself that it looks real. He then flips the license around and appears stunned, asking Gon if he knows the person who dropped it. Gon replies that the man called himself Kite, but Satotz reveals that the license was awarded to a Hunter named Ging, leaving Gon surprised. Satotz points to the certification number and explains that the last three digits match the exam for that year. Gon sees that his license has "287" for the 287th Hunter Exam, and Satotz shows the "267" on Ging's license, revealing that he was the only examinee to pass the 267th Hunter Exam.
When Gon asks Satotz if he knows anything about Ging, Satotz reveals that he was the Hunter who inspired him and excavated the Lurka Ruins. However, he explains that when he tried to learn more about him, he couldn't find anything else, calling Ging a mystery and telling Gon that surfing for him might be a good start. Gon awkwardly says that he will give it a try, and Satotz adds that the results will give him a good idea of his status. As Gon holds the license in his hand and excitedly tells himself that Kite left it for him, Satotz wonders if Gon can let him know how to contact Kite. Gon replies that while he owes him a debt, he isn't sure how to find him, promising to ask if he sees him again. After the two thank each other and prepare to part ways, Satotz begins to say one more thing but stops himself short and just tells Gon to take care. As Gon runs back over to Kurapika and Leorio, Satotz tells Menchi and Buhara that he felt moved to help Gon. Menchi wonders if he almost told him, and Satotz confirms that he nearly revealed that the Hunter Exam isn't over yet.
Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio make their way to a small Internet café inside the hotel, and Kurapika uses his license to access cyberspace, first searching for Kukuroo Mountain. The three learn that it's located in the Republic of Padokea in the Dentora Region, with an elevation of 12,211 feet. Leorio wonders where Padokea is, and Kurapika opens a world map to find that it's on the continent to the northeast of their current location. He also learns that the country is open to tourists and takes three days to reach by airship, asking when they should leave. Gon and Leorio both excitedly answer today, and Kurapika happily makes reservations. Gon then asks Kurapika if he can also search for Ging, and Kurapika finds several Gings listed on the Hunter index. Gon tells him that Ging's last name is Freecss, and Kurapika is shocked to see that the information is locked behind a "designated top secret" screen. He explains that his name has to be entered into a database of confidential members, which is only possible for someone who has the authority of a national executive and an enormous personal fortune. Leorio can't believe how important Gon's father is, and Gon is also left intrigued as he stares at the screen and remembers Satotz's words about Ging's status.
