Synopsis[]

After traveling by airship to the Republic of Padokea, Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio make their way by train toward Kukuroo Mountain. Leorio is the first to spot it in the distance and describes it as creepy, saying that he can easily see assassins living nearby. Kurapika says they will need to ask around, but Leorio stresses that they need to find a hotel first and devise a plan. However, Gon happily tells them that they are only there to see a friend, with Kurapika and Leorio noting how carefree Gon is. After the three reach a small town and ask about the mountain, a female shopkeeper guesses that they want to check out the Zoldyck estate and recommends that they catch the daily bus tour.

The tour bus approaching the Zoldyck estate

The three make their way to the nearby bus and are welcomed by the tour guide, who thanks everyone for choosing Lamentation Tours. As the three spot two suspicious men among the group, the guide directs their attention to the mountain, explaining that it's an extinct volcano surrounded by a dense forest. She adds that while the mansion of the well-known Zoldyck Family is somewhere on the mountain, no one has ever seen it. She also reveals that the family consists of five siblings, two parents, two grandparents, and a great-grandfather, all of whom are assassins.

The bus drives as close as it can to the estate, stopping in front of a large wall with an ornate set of doors. The guide says that it's called the Door of Hades and that no one who enters comes out alive. She then directs their attention to the service door by the guard booth, but explains that since they don't have access, they cannot proceed any further. Leorio angrily replies that they are nowhere close to the mountain, but she reveals that the entire mountain and forest belong to the Zoldycks. Gon speaks up and asks how they can gain access to the estate, but she reminds him that it belongs to murderers and that they don't want to do so. The two suspicious men approach the guide and say that the entire thing is a bluff and that there's a Jenny Symbol 2011100 million reward for just pictures of the Zoldycks, leaving Leorio stunned.

Chap 39 - Mike and tourists

Mike disposing of two intruders

As they guess that the Zoldycks rely on mystique and are not as dangerous or interesting as they seem, the two men approach the guard booth, with the larger man tearing off the door and holding up the guard. He orders him to open the door, but the guard pleads with him and says that the master of the house wouldn't approve. They then steal the small key and enter the service door. Gon checks on the guard, who says that the two men are about to meet Mike. Screams are suddenly heard behind the door before a large hand opens it and tosses out the skeletons of the two men. As the other tour guests run in terror, the guard berates Mike for eating between meals. One of the guests tells the three to hurry and board the bus, but Gon says that they will stay behind, leaving the guide and the others stunned as they quickly take their leave.

As the four drink tea inside the booth, the guard is surprised that they are friends with Killua, saying that in his 20 years as a guard, no visitors have ever claimed to be friends with any of the Zoldycks. He describes the mountain as a lonely and dreary place, pointing to the skeletons in the trash can and saying that men like that are not warmly received. After thanking them for coming, he suddenly says that they cannot proceed any further since Mike, the Zoldycks' guard dog, only obeys family members and has been ordered to catch and kill all intruders. After he laughingly tells them that Killua wouldn't appreciate them being eaten, Kurapika asks how he handles Mike, pointing out that he has a key to the gate.

Chap 39 - Zebro preparing to open the Testing Gate

Zebro preparing to open the Testing Gate

The guard reveals that while he does go inside, the key is only for intruders, who always fall for the fake service door next to the gate. As the three begin to understand, the guard reveals that he is more of a janitor who cleans up after Mike than a gatekeeper. Kurapika realizes that the real gate isn't locked, which the guard confirms. Leorio quickly leaves the booth and approaches the gate, unable to push it open even after using all his strength. The guard tells Leorio that he isn't strong enough, but Leorio angrily replies that he is stronger than him. The guard confidently walks forward, removing his jacket and revealing that the door is actually called the Testing Gate. As he explains that those who are unable to open it are deemed unworthy to enter, energy suddenly surrounds his body and increases his muscle definition, allowing him to push open the first two doors. The doors quickly close, and he explains that they automatically shut so the three of them need to move quickly, adding that he won't be able to do it much longer given his age.

The guard then reveals that the other order given to Mike states that he is not to attack anyone who enters through the Testing Gate. He explains that the first doors weigh two tons each, and Leorio is left stunned before realizing that he said the first doors. The guard points out that there are seven pairs in total and that the tonnage doubles with each set, with more doors opening depending on the amount of force used. He reveals that Killua opened three of them when he returned, and Gon says that it would have been twelve tons, with Kurapika quickly correcting him to sixteen. The guard repeats that it's the only way to enter, emphasizing that the Zoldycks really live in their own world. Gon rejects the notion and asks to borrow the key, leaving the others confused. With a small grin on his face, he tells them that he is only there to see his friend, not to be tested, content with being considered an intruder.
