Synopsis[]

At Meteor City's church, it's announced that there will be another special screening of the Power Cleaners. In one of the church's rooms, Shalnark asks if three of the members still aren't there, and Uvogin wonders how they haven't shown up with only 15 minutes left. Sheila points out that while Franklin and Nobunaga are always barely late, Sarasa usually isn't. As the children excitedly wait for the screening to start, Chrollo says that he will go look for her, but Sheila tells him that she will help, pointing out that he doesn't know who Sarasa's caretakers are. In the city itself, one of Sarasa's caretakers tells them that she hasn't seen Sarasa since yesterday, adding that she thought Sarasa was with them.

Chap 397 - Chrollo apologizing

Chrollo apologizing to the audience

Back at the church, an announcement is made apologizing for the delay and telling the audience to wait a little while longer. Phinks tells Chrollo that Sarasa hasn't been back to her hamlet since she left, adding that she's out there by herself. Uvogin guesses that she must have been looking for videos somewhere, and Pakunoda asks Chrollo what they should do, with every member appearing worried. In the auditorium, one of the children notices Chrollo walking out and announces that Red is there, causing everyone else to cheer. However, Chrollo announces that the performance has been canceled and reveals that Sarasa has been missing since yesterday. He explains that they haven't been able to find her after she said she was going back to her hamlet, reminding them of all the recent abductions of children throughout Meteor City. He points out that they didn't take the necessary precautions and adds that it's his fault since he let her go home alone. He says that they plan to continue looking for her and apologizes for having to cancel the performance.

One of the children quickly addresses Chrollo as Red and offers to help with the search, with several others also volunteering. Although Chrollo is worried about their safety, Uvogin energetically tells them to gather by hamlet and talk to the caretakers first before asking the factory manager and getting the men's help. He adds that if they mention Chrollo's name, no one will refuse to help. Phinks excitedly says that they will find Orange, and the children begin to assure Chrollo that they can do it together. Phinks then tells Chrollo to go with Uvogin and that the two can use his bike, tossing his keys to the latter. Uvogin tells Chrollo not to cry and that they will find her, assuring him that she's most likely injured somewhere and can't move. With tears running down his face, Chrollo agrees to go with them.

Chap 397 - Chrollo and Uvogin seeing Sarasa

Chrollo and Uvogin seeing Sarasa's body

As Uvogin and Chrollo speed away on Phinks' bike, the others search the fields and piles of trash for Sarasa. Chrollo eventually finds Sarasa's heart-shaped pouch on the ground, also noticing tire tracks and footprints. He looks toward Uga Forest in the distance and says that she could be there. The members make their way into the forest and find a garbage bag hanging from a tree branch, with a note attached to the trunk. Uvogin worriedly says that they can't know for sure until one of them checks. Chrollo steps forward and says that he will look, but Uvogin wonders what is written on the note. As Chrollo asks him if he can get the bag down, Uvogin takes the knife out of the note and angrily asks Chrollo what's written on it. Chrollo calmly tells him to get the bag down, and Uvogin climbs the large tree before using the knife to cut the rope. The heavy bag falls down and knocks Chrollo to the ground. Uvogin quickly climbs back down, and after Chrollo slowly opens the bag, he sees Sarasa's dismembered body with another note covering her face.

With Chrollo and Uvogin left speechless, Nobunaga asks Chrollo if it's Sarasa, with both Phinks and Shalnark also wanting confirmation. Uvogin again asks Chrollo what's written on the note, but Chrollo refuses to say. Uvogin furiously grabs him by the collar and orders him to say what the people who killed Sarasa wrote. Chrollo again refuses to say and adds that he won't answer even if it kills him, telling Uvogin to learn how to read it himself. Left speechless, Uvogin tosses Chrollo to the ground and begins to walk away. Shalnark calls his name, and Machi angrily wonders if he plans to leave Sarasa behind, causing Uvogin to stop. Holding the bag tightly, she says that they have to take her home since it would be too sad to leave her, adding that it must have hurt and she must have been so afraid. As Machi apologizes, both Pakunoda and Sheila begin to cry their heart out, while at the same time Sheila wrap her arms around her friend.

Chap 397 - The members saying goodbye

The members saying goodbye to Sarasa

Sometime later, the children gather around Sarasa's body lying in a casket at the church, calling her beautiful and saying that it's like she's still alive. Lisores tells them that it's called embalming, explaining that it's a technique used to restore and keep a person's body as close as possible to how it was when they were alive. He adds that it's a miracle that her body was able to be restored so well given the condition it was in, asking them to thank the embalmer, Ms. Renko. Machi looks back to see a mysterious woman dressed in black with a large hat that has pointed ears. As the members put flowers inside Sarasa's casket and Chrollo adds her heart-shaped pouch, Uvogin pulls out one of the tapes and says that she should keep it since they have it all memorized.

Machi then approaches Ms. Renko and asks if she can learn to embalm like that, but Renko replies that she cannot, explaining that her technique is a special ability. Machi wonders if the ability has something to do with why her body is glowing so much, and Renko quickly asks if she can see aura. Machi stares at her with a determined look, and the jealous Renko comments on her pretty eyes. She then tosses Machi a small piece of paper with a specific design, explaining that she can visit anytime if the caretakers give her permission. She tells her to get on the last bus and ask for Kirimori Valley, adding that if she shows them the piece of paper, they will take her there for free. As Renko walks away, the word "aura" lingers in Machi's mind.

Chap 397 - Chrollo explaining his plan

Chrollo explaining his plan to Uvogin

After Sarasa is laid to rest in a nearby cemetery, Chrollo confronts Uvogin and asks if he can wait three years. He explains that he will have prepared his own power and a proper system for Meteor City before he turns 14. However, Uvogin replies that he's leaving to avenge Sarasa's death. Chrollo tells him that it would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack and reminds him that he wanted to travel the world together. Uvogin angrily says that three years won't change anything, but Chrollo quickly replies that it will, leaving Uvogin surprised. Chrollo explains that the world is on the brink of a communication revolution and that once the infrastructure is in place, people around the world can be instantly connected at the speed of light. He then describes a place where information from one person can be seen by people all around the world, but Uvogin wonders why it matters since the culprits most likely have the footage with them.

Chrollo explains that it was a message meant to attract attention and a crime scene created with a specific direction, comparing it to the theater. He adds that there were cigarette butts on the ground where they were standing, guessing that someone recorded the video there. He adds that criminals like them can't resist the opportunity to show off their "work" to the world. He continues by saying that even with instant communication, there will still exist national borders that control their passage, but that the criminals will find loopholes. He reveals that they will create the loophole for them and that if they use the void within Meteor City to create a place where they can avoid the police, the criminals will come to them. Uvogin seems to understand the plan but then wonders what he's talking about.

Chap 397 - Sheila leaving the group

Sheila leaving the group after Sarasa's death

Shalnark suddenly appears and explains that Chrollo is talking about making a hideout for criminals with the new technology and then finding the ones they're looking for among the crowd. Chrollo is happy to see him, and as Shalnark says that they will help him, the other members appear from the nearby trees. Shalnark adds that three years will go by quickly and they have a lot to get ready, explaining that they need the knowledge and means to get close to the culprits as well as the strength and skills to deal with them. As the members continue to talk, a downcast Sheila is seen within the forest walking away from the future diabolical thieves, refuses to embrace the darkness in their misguided plan to avenge Sarasa.

Chrollo says that they will need something even more important, revealing that they should be prepared to sacrifice their lives to prevent any more victims like Sarasa and the others in Meteor City. He then surprises them by saying that in three years, he will kill a lot of people. He adds that Sarasa wouldn't have wanted that, vowing to apologize to her as much as he can if he sees her again someday. However, he says that if the universe doesn't have a reunion system like that, he cannot allow the culprits to get away with their crime. He adds that under the current legal system, he can't imagine they will repent and feel remorse for what they did.

Chap 397 - Uvogin

Uvogin nominating Chrollo as the Troupe's leader

Finally, Chrollo reveals that he will live the rest of his life as a villain and make the whole world shudder at the thought of him. He explains that he will design Meteor City and himself so that low-life scum will never come near them. He looks up at Uvogin and asks him if he will help him and become the Troupe's leader. However, Uvogin tells Chrollo that he is the head and that if he's the head, he will follow him until he dies. Uvogin then raises his arm with one finger pointing up and gestures toward Chrollo, with the other seven members all agreeing to nominate Chrollo as their leader. Years later, Chrollo is seen addressing six of the seven members as the Spider is born.
