The Auction Begins!! (オークション(かい)(さい)()()()()()()()()!!, Ōkushon Kaisai!!) is the 71st chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis[]

It's announced that the annual auction in Yorknew City is the biggest in the world, with trillions of Jenny exchanging hands over the course of ten days. It's stated that an item bought for Jenny Symbol 201110,000 could sell for a hundred million the next day. Lastly, it's mentioned that while there are thousands of auction houses, many also deal in illegal goods alone.

Gon and Killua make their way to a large, open market and are overwhelmed by the number of people. After someone yells out that they lost a bet, Gon turns to Killua and reminds him that gambling isn't the answer. As Killua tells him to shut up and mocks the amount of money he made, it's revealed that Gon turned his Jenny Symbol 20115.42 million into Jenny Symbol 20115,434,997 while Killua initially turned his share into Jenny Symbol 2011286 million but then lost it all. Gon says that he understands negotiation better now and reminds Killua that he now has to do one thing he says.

Killua mentions that Leorio should be arriving sometime, and Gon adds that Kurapika arrived yesterday. Killua worries that Kurapika's new job won't leave him enough time, but Gon says that he would call them in that case. As Killua plans to leave his cellphone on, he sternly asks Gon why he still doesn't have one, reminding him that all Hunters should. The two head to a phone vendor, who shows off a best-selling, ultra thin phone with G.P.S.

Leorio meeting up with Gon and Killua

Someone behind them suddenly says that it's not very good since it has terrible range and isn't waterproof. Gon and Killua turn around to see Leorio, who suggests that they buy the Beatle-07. He says that while it may be heavy and costly, it works all over the world, translates 200 languages, and they can watch and record television on it. Killua is very impressed and tells Gon that they should both buy one. Gon comments on Leorio arriving early as well as on his new cologne.

They ask the shopkeeper for the price, and he replies with Jenny Symbol 2011400,000 for two phones. After haggling to the point that a crowd gathers to watch and applaud, Leorio gets the price down to Jenny Symbol 2011110,580 for one. Gon and Killua thank him, but Leorio says that he can do even better, mentioning that he only paid Jenny Symbol 201180,029 for his. Leorio changes the subject and asks if they learned Nen. They reply that they did, and Gon asks him if he plans to learn after applying to school. Leorio, however, smiles and says that he already learned it too.

24 hours before the three met at the market, Neon and her bodyguards exit a large airship. As they travel by car, Dalzollene hands her a set of papers for September. She comments on how many there are, and he replies that two men in particular wanted their fortunes. She reminds him that she warned she would quit if he added any more. He apologizes, but says that they are friends of her father. She calls him on the phone and at first says that she quits, but then says that it's the last time, stressing that she will really quit if he doesn't keep his word. After hanging up, she happily says that he will get the stuff for her, and Dalzollene is glad for her.

Chap 71 - Neon using her ability to write out fortunes

Neon using her ability to write out fortunes

After saying that she better get it over with, she pulls out a pen and a creature suddenly appears from Neon's aura, guiding her right hand to quickly write on the pieces of paper. Basho tells Kurapika that he heard she's an amazing fortune-teller with notable clients through her father's connection to the Mafia. Kurapika, however, guesses that her father only reached his current status by exploiting Neon's ability. He adds that it must be the reason why he fears so much for her safety. Basho reminds Kurapika of Dalzollene's words about not assuming things and that their only job is to take care of all threats.

Neon finishes all the fortunes and tells Dalzollene that she wants to go shopping until the auction starts tomorrow night. Dalzollene replies that they would happy to tag along with her. As the motorcade drives toward the city, they pass a group of four individuals walking in the same direction. Sporting two swords, one of them asks the others how many years have passed since all 13 members were together. The shortest answers that while it's been three years and two months, members No. 4 and 8 are different now. The tallest asks Machi if she is sure that Hisoka is coming to the meeting. Machi shrugs off his question and says that she told him to come. The large man says that it was her job and the short one says that he doesn't like Hisoka, wondering why Chrollo lets him do as he pleases.

The man with two swords praises Hisoka's Bungee Gum and says that he's tough to fight. The short man asks if he is implying that Chrollo fears Hisoka, ordering him to apologize. The large man says that he gives Hisoka too much credit, and the other man says that it's easy to talk big. After the tension lingers in the air for a few seconds, the large man and the one with swords slam their fists together and begin sparring. Machi wonders what Chrollo is planning, and the short man reminds her that they are thieves so they are coming together to steal. She wonders what he plans to steal, smiling and guessing that it will be old books since he loves them. The short man says that it's probably the game that is being auctioned off, adding that it's the most expensive and dangerous in the world.

Chrollo telling the Troupe members that they will steal everything from the auction

With all 13 members of the Phantom Troupe gathered together in an abandoned building, their leader Chrollo declares that they will steal all the loot from the Underground Auction. A large, hairy man asks him if he is sure since they will have to worry about making enemies of all the Mafia members. Chrollo asks the man if he's scared, but the man replies that he's elated, asking him to give the order as blood drips from his mouth. Chrollo gives them permission to kill anyone who gets in their way, and the members make their way toward the city. Elsewhere, Dalzollene speaks to someone on the phone and apologizes for interrupting their vacation. He tells them that there was something very worrying among Neon's fortunes.
