A Struggle in the Mist ((きり)()()()()()()()()()(なか)()()()()()()()()()(こう)(ぼう)()()()()()()()(), Kiri no Naka no Kōbō) is the 9th chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis[]

As several examinees lie dead or dying on the ground, Hisoka continues to shuffle his cards and tells the others that while he planned to wait until the Second Phase, he wanted to play examiner during the First Phase since it's so boring. The examinees are left stunned, but one angrily speaks up and says that since they have lost sight of Satotz in the fog, they have all failed, including Hisoka. However, Hisoka tells him that he's wrong and quickly kills him with a playing card to the head, confidently adding that a magician never runs out of tricks. Many examinees quickly surround Hisoka with their weapons drawn, with one saying that someone so homicidal doesn't deserve to be a Hunter and another warning him that it will be his last Hunter Exam.

Hisoka then draws a four of hearts from his deck of cards and declares that it will be the only one he needs. The examinees become enraged at the remark and charge toward him to attack, but Hisoka easily dodges their strikes and uses the single card to slice their necks and faces. With Kurapika and Leorio looking on in horror, Hisoka continues his massacre and begins to chuckle before laughing maniacally as the terrified examinees try to run away. After killing nearly everyone and calling them dropouts, he begins walking toward the remaining three of the group: Kurapika, Leorio, and Cherry.

The three stand motionless as Kurapika holds his bokken ready, and Cherry whispers that splitting up is their only chance of survival, given Hisoka's superiority over them. He recognizes that they both have their own reasons for wanting to become Hunters and would prefer not to flee, but he stresses that it's the only reasonable option. Once Cherry gives the signal, the three turn and run away in different directions toward the fog. Hisoka praises their strategy and gives them a head start of ten seconds, counting down and then wondering who he should chase after first. However, Leorio suddenly appears out of the fog holding a piece of wood and having put his tie around the wound on his arm. He vows to get payback and charges forward with the weapon, with Kurapika and Cherry unable to believe that he went back.

Chap 9 - Gon unable to land another hit on Hisoka

Gon unable to land another hit on Hisoka

Hisoka tells Leorio that he likes his spirit and easily dodges the strike, preparing to attack him from behind, but the hook from Gon's fishing rod suddenly strikes Hisoka in the face. Leorio is stunned that Gon came back for him, and Hisoka smiles at the motionless Gon, praising his strike and impressed that he's using a fishing rod. As Hisoka begins walking toward Gon to get a closer look, Leorio tries to attack him from behind, but Hisoka uppercuts him in the face and sends him flying in the air. Gon immediately charges forward and tries to strike him with his fishing rod, but Hisoka somehow disappears right in front of his eyes and then puts his hand around his throat, praising Gon's loyalty to his friend.

Putting on a smile and removing his hand, Hisoka assures Gon that Leorio is still alive and has passed, happily telling Gon that he has passed as well and will make a good Hunter. A communication and GPS device suddenly beeps, and someone tells Hisoka to hurry up since the Second Phase is about to start. Hisoka acknowledges the message and replies that he will be there shortly. He then stresses to Gon how important friendship is and picks up the unconscious Leorio to carry over his shoulder, asking Gon if he will be okay on his own. After Gon replies yes with a simple nod, Hisoka calls him a good boy and chuckles as he disappears through the fog. Gon quickly falls to his knees as Kurapika runs up behind him to ensure he's okay. As his heartbeat quickens, it's stated that Gon has never met a creature as strange and mysterious as Hisoka.
