The Chimera Ant Nest (キメラアントの()()()()()()()()()(), Kimera Anto no Su) is the structure that the Chimera Ant Queen had her construction Chimera Ants build out of dirt and feces.[1][2][3]

Overview[]

After giving birth to numerous lower-ranked Ants inside a small cave, the Queen needed a large nest to bear the King, adding that she needed a place to rest while pregnant without having to fear predators.[4] A Chimera Ant Queen will typically stay on the move until she finds a favorable site, continuing to produce soldier ants until then. Once she chooses a site, she will produce numerous construction Ants to quickly build the nest and will remain there until her death.[1]

Plot[]

Chimera Ant arc[]

Inside a small cave in NGL, the Chimera Ant Queen looks up at the numerous eggs and says that she is running out of space. She adds that she needs a large nest to bear a great King, a place where she can rest while pregnant without having to fear predators.[4] As several flying Chimera Ants carry back humans to the nest, Spin explains to the group that a Queen stays mobile until she finds a favorable site for her nest, continuing to produce soldier Ants until then. She adds that once she chooses a site, she will produce numerous construction Ants to build the nest and will remain there until her death.[1]

The Queen watching over the three Royal Guards

Inside the nest, as the humans' naked bodies are thrown together into piles, the Queen summons the Squadron Leaders and tells them that she will focus solely on giving birth to the King, asking them to deliver 50 humans a day. As she awaits the birth of her son, she goes to a room with three large eggs hanging from the ceiling, saying that she will give names to the three Royal Guards.[1] Dozens of construction Ants continue to increase the size of the nest. Cheetu tells Colt about his soldiers being killed by strange human weapons, and Peggy stresses that the greatest strength of humans is their ability to learn and adapt, worrying about the safety of the Queen. Colt suggests seizing the weapons and using them against the humans.[2]

After being injured by Gon and Killua and rescued by Colt, Rammot lies on the nest's floor puking up blood and vowing to get revenge against the two boys. Colt learns that Cheetu and Hagya's squads are slaughtering humans and leaving their bodies to rot after they make their quotas. Colt points out that there are rare humans among them, and Hagya agrees to bring them back to the Queen if they find any. However, once Colt leaves, Hagya tells Flutter and Hina that they will eat the rares themselves. Colt, Peggy, and Cheetu then discuss how they will maintain the quotas for the Queen. Elsewhere, when Gon, Killua, and Kite discover the D² Manufacturing Plant, Gon wonders if it's a Chimera Ant nest. However, Kite replies that the Ants don't dig holes, explaining that they build up their nest with dirt and feces.[3]

Rammot Nen Unleashed

Rammot awakening to Nen

After the three defeat several Ants at the manufacturing plant, Kite tells Gon and Killua that they need to hurry since the nest is close. Elsewhere, the Amateur Hunters discuss the hierarchy of a Chimera Ant colony and state that once the King hatches, the Queen stays inside the nest and produces a King at constant intervals. Inside the nest, Rammot is seen with aura swelling around him as he laughs maniacally and says that he feels reborn. Colt asks Peggy if he can see the light around Rammot, and Peggy says that he can, anxious as he looks upon the formidable power. Colt says that he knew it was possible since the humans could do it, realizing that the trigger for awakening it must be their attacks. He asks Rammot to hit him, and Peggy can't believe Colt's statement. Rammot asks Colt if he's sure since he won't hold back with his attack, and Colt is fine with it, saying that the attack needs to be strong enough to work. A frightened Peggy looks on as Rammot winds up and sends Colt far back with a heavy punch.[5]

As Rammot continues to revel in his newfound power, Peggy stresses that they need to study it more. Still reeling from Rammot's punch, Colt adds that Zazan captured a rare human a few days ago, telling Rammot and Peggy to look for him in the storehouse.[6] Pig tells them that since it was brought in three days ago, it would have already been offered to the Queen. As the three continue to discuss the situation, Pokkle is seen hiding under a pile of bones, having used an antidote to recover from Zazan's poison. As Rammot tells himself that he can become King with his newfound power, the Royal Guard Neferpitou appears behind him and immediately crushes his dream, with Rammot realizing that his power is meant to serve the King and his Royal Guards.[7]

HxH2011 EP84 Pitou extracting information from Pokkle

Pitou torturing Pokkle

With Pokkle left terrified by their ominous aura, Neferpitou asks Rammot and Peggy why a human is alive underneath the bones, with both Pitou and Rammot turning to look at it. After it's stated that the Queen requires balls of flesh from 250 humans every day, she is seen visibly pregnant with the King, chuckling to herself and saying that he moved.[7] After capturing Pokkle, Pitou probes his brain for information about Nen, learning about the Four Major Principles and aura types. Pokkle then reveals the details about the Water Divination test, with Rammot learning that he's an Enhancer and Pitou a Specialist.[8]

After Pig chops up Pokkle for the Queen, Pitou summons the Squadron Leaders and Officers, telling them that they can gain enormous power for a little suffering. As Colt awakens to Nen, Rammot is seen punching several Ants one at a time to awaken them as well. Pitou senses something and goes outside to take a look, hanging from the side of the nest and spotting Gon, Killua, and Kite far off in the distance. Pitou then leaps from the nest and severs Kite's right arm with a single strike.[8] As Pitou holds Kite's severed head in their lap, they tell the Ants to prepare a freezing chamber in the nest big enough to store more than 100 humans.[9]

Pitou EN

Pitou using their En to watch over the nest

Sitting in front of Kite's body frozen in a large block of ice, Pitou says that their fight was fun and describes it as a dream, wishing that they could fight again. They then realize that all they need to do is fix him, deciding to make that their ability as ominous aura swirls around them.[10] Outside the nest, Netero looks toward it far off in the distance and spots Pitou on guard, revealing that the Ant looks stronger than him.[11] Netero tells Morel and Knov that it will be difficult to slip through Pitou's En, which extends far out from the nest. Morel then uses his pipe to create dozens of smoke rabbits and sends them toward the nest to find out how many enemies there are. Pitou spots them in the distance and wonders if it's an enemy ability. Shaiapouf then appears and suggests eliminating them if they get close enough to the nest.[12]

It's stated that Gyro left the Queen's nest because his pride still considered himself a king. Inside the nest, Peggy tells Colt about multiple troops that have disappeared. The two go to Pitou for advice, but the Royal Guard is busy in front of several pieces of equipment and leaves the outside dealings to them, stressing that the Royal Guards will defend the nest. Peggy and Colt discuss the situation further and decide to let the brash troops act as bait so that they can set traps.[13] Netero, Morel, and Knov work together to eliminate the Ant troops, with Colt telling Peggy that they only have 14 troops left. The Queen is even more visibly pregnant, and with skulls all around her, she chuckles as the King moves inside, asking if he is ready to come out.[14]

91 - Meruem's cruel nature

The King ordering the other Ants to bring him food

As Kite sits in silence and Pouf plays a violin, Pitou greets Menthuthuyoupi, who is the last Royal Guard to be born. Knov confirms to Netero by phone that the Ants are staying inside the nest. Knov asks if they should take action, but Netero tells them to wait since the deadline is so close. He says that the Ants will need to restock on food in about a week, during which time they can take out a few more of their soldiers.[15]

The Queen unexpectedly goes into labor and screams out in pain. Pouf asks Pitou if it's time, and they say that the birth of the King has arrived. The Queen, however, says that it's too early and tells her son to wait, but he replies back from inside the womb and silences her, suddenly punching his way out and leaving the Queen screaming in agony.[16] After being born and leaving the Queen in critical condition, the King orders the other Ants to prepare a feast for him. When Peggy tries to help the Queen and Turtle oversteps his bounds, both are subsequently killed by the King. The three Royal Guards arrive and lead him to his meal. When Colt begs Pitou to use her ability to heal the Queen, Pitou tells him that they don't need her anymore now that the King has arrived.[17]

91 - Meruem

The King forcing his way out of the nest

The King then punches a large hole in the side of the nest and makes his way to his meal above. However, he is left disappointed by the taste and desires the rares that the Queen would occasionally feed to him. As the King and Royal Guards leave the nest in search of rare humans, Colt carries a white flag and flies toward Morel and Knov. Although he promises them that the Ants will surrender if they save the Queen's life, he reveals that the King has already been born and that he and the Royal Guards are evil.[17]

The Squadron Leaders find that Peggy and Turtle's bodies have been cannibalized, and Small Bear explains that the King most likely thinks of all other creatures as food. Hagya and Zazan point out that the Queen can no longer procreate, with the latter adding that each of them could possibly become a king. Bihorn vehemently disagrees, but he and Small Bear are left in the minority. Outside, Colt warns Morel and Knov that the Ants will leave the nest and attempt to become copycat kings, adding that they could spread worldwide and cause devastation to local ecosystems. Morel is surprised that soldier Ants can breed, and Knov explains that it's reported that when a Queen dies, the soldiers leave the nest and forcibly mate with females of other species.[18]

92 - Dr

Dr. Lee and her team trying to save the Queen's life

Elsewhere, Netero speaks to someone over the phone and informs them that the King has already been born. He asks them to send the Chimera Ant research team and Dr. Lee so that she can assemble a team of surgeons and artificial organ specialists for the Queen. Inside the nest, Colt learns from Bihorn and Small Bear that most of the soldiers have already left and joined other troops, with only some of them (including Koala) choosing to stay behind. Dr. Lee and her team tend to the Queen and proceed to attach artificial organs within her abdomen. Colt offers his organs and blood, but Dr. Lee explains that Chimera Ants differ in each generation, making donations impossible. She tells him that he should pray for the organs to be successful, and Colt feels helpless as he sits beside the Queen.[19]

The Queen asks if her son was born healthy, and Colt lies by saying that the King and his Royal Guards are looking for herbs to save her. Octopus reveals to the doctors and Hunters that the King killed and ate some of the Squadron Leaders before leaving, saying that he probably won't return since he doesn't care about the Queen's well-being at all. The Queen tells Colt that her injuries are fatal, and he again begs Dr. Lee to let them use his organs, but she tells him to listen to the Queen and respect her wishes. The Queen tells them that she has one last request, saying that she thought of a name for her son: Meruem, which means "light that illuminates all". She asks them to let him know, and upon revealing his name, she thinks of her beloved son and dies soon after. Colt becomes devastated, claiming that he couldn't save her again and angry that he can't save anyone. When Knov asks if something happened before, Small Bear explains that Colt must be mixing it up with his human memories, and Morel is shocked that they still have them. Small Bear explains that it can vary, but says that their previous personalities affect them greatly, with some of them even able to remember their human names.[19]

Kite is born

Colt finding a creature inside the Queen

As Small Bear says that it also allowed them to learn speech so quickly, the group notices something moving inside the Queen's womb. Small Bear moves in closer, but Colt orders him not to touch her, saying that he will get it out. He reaches inside and takes out a tiny baby, holding it in the palm of his hand. The baby begins to move and cry, causing Colt himself to cry with a smile on his face. He swears to protect the baby, but Morel suddenly approaches him and holds his pipe right beside Colt's head. Knov is confused, but Morel asks Colt if he can swear that he and the baby will never eat a human, telling him to leave if he can't. But he says that if Colt can swear to it, he will protect the both of them as long as he lives. After making his promise, Morel starts to cry as well, and so does Knuckle, chuckling and saying that he inherited his soft side from his master. Colt then briefly thinks back to his human life as Kurt, with his mother and sister Reina.[19] Later, Knuckle and Shoot find something inside the nest that leaves both of them shocked.[20]
