Coventoba (コベントバ, Kobentoba) is a high-ranking soldier in the Royal Army of the Kakin Empire, and one of 1st Prince Benjamin's personal soldiers doubling as his guard during the voyage.[1] On the first day, Benjamin ordered his soldiers to join the guards of the other Princes, and Coventoba is now among 3rd Prince Zhang Lei's bodyguards.[2]

Appearance[]

Coventoba has a completely shaven head and prominent cheekbones. He wears the standard Kakin military attire of a zipper jacket, pants, and dark combat boots. He wears an earpiece in his left ear. He appears to be above average in height among Benjamin's soldiers.

Personality[]

According to Slakka, Coventoba is antisocial.[3] While it is unclear whether that is true or not, Coventoba is not one to speak much, even among guards. In general, Coventoba has not been seen speaking unless spoken to, and even then does not say more than necessary. Coventoba is diligent in his duties in gathering intelligence for Benjamin, and also is not one to give Zhang Lei information that could or could not make him a threat to Benjamin, most prominently seen in him following the explanation of the non-Nen user guards that the coins dropped from thin air instead of from the mouth of Zhang Lei's Guardian Spirit Beast,[4] and in him concealing his ownership of one of Zhang Lei's coins.[5]

Background[]

As one of the First Prince's soldiers, Coventoba graduated from Kakin's Royal Military Academy and became a part of his army.[6]

Prince Benjamin's soldiers

Prince Benjamin's soldiers

Coventoba is one of fifteen soldiers (including the Captain of the soldiers, Balsamilco Might) working under 1st Prince Benjamin and is present during Balsamilco's briefing on the eve of the voyage.[1]

On the first day of the voyage, Coventoba and fellow personal soldier Rihan receive Benjamin as he leaves the departure ceremony banquet. Benjamin, riled up from a conversation with Camilla, orders Coventoba to get in contact with Balsamilco to have 4th Prince Tserriednich brought to him to be killed. Balsamilco does not do so and calms Benjamin down instead, and after some discussion, Coventoba, along with Benjamin's other private soldiers, is ordered to act as both bodyguards and spies to all of the other princes, and to report any information regarding the Princes' Guardian Spirit Beasts and the Hunters' abilities. Coventoba becomes 3rd Prince Zhang Lei's bodyguard,[2] along with Slakka, Queen Duazul's soldier.

Later that day, both Coventoba and Slakka guard Zhang Lei as he meets with 8th Queen Oito, 14th Prince Woble, and their bodyguard Kurapika.[7] Immediately after the meeting, Coventoba informs Slakka to go with Kurapika and his group under 1st Queen Unma's orders, much to Slakka's dismay.[3]

The following day, while Zhang Lei is having lunch, a coin drops to the floor. He initially believes it belongs to one of his bodyguards, but they tell him it just appeared out of thin air. Coventoba picks it up and hands it to the Prince, without telling him it was the work of his Guardian Spirit Beast, which had also produced a coin, currently in the soldier's pocket, the day before.[4] The next day, Zhang Lei asks him for his opinion as a Nen user on the coins' functionality. Coventoba replies that as a conjured item, it either replicates the function of the real thing or has some supernatural effect; since to his knowledge no coin with a similar appearance exists, Coventoba speculates it is the latter.[8]

Prince Zhang Lei rewarding Tenftory with a conjured coin

At 13:30 on the tenth day,[9] Zhang Lei rewards Tenftory with a coin created by his Guardian Spirit Beast for awakening his Nen. Zhang Lei tells Tenftory that he is the first to receive one.[10] Coventoba watches as Tenftory lets Zhang Lei know that Woble and 5th Prince Tubeppa had agreed to defer the throne to him if they were the last three Princes remaining, and sees Tenftory rewarded with a second coin.[9] At the same time, Coventoba silently thinks that the first one is actually in his possession. At that point, he notices that the value of the coin has increased from 1 to 10.[10] He determines it to be due to the Guardian Spirit Beast's ability and wonders if he should slide it in its mouth, but rules out doing so due to the risk involved. He asks Tenftory to see his coin and sees that it is identical in appearance, except the number on it is a '1', and decides to return to observing. Later he accompanies Zhang Lei to Onior Longbao's room, reporting his movements to Benjamin.[5]

On the eleventh day, Coventoba stands guard as Kurapika comes with Oito and Woble to Room 1003 to assist Zhang Lei in identifying the function of the coins his Guardian Spirit Beasts produce. He helps Zhang Lei realize that he had already more or less proven his hypothesis that the coins change in value after ten days. Kurapika also helps Zhang Lei identify that the coins' appearances change when they change ownership and likely grant their owners Nen abilities based on their value. Since Coventoba is present, Zhang Lei encourages Kurapika to share his thoughts freely, but Kurapika picks up on Zhang Lei's hint to not reveal how the ability to keep a bet. Kurapika intentionally keeps his suspicion that Zhang Lei's Guardian Spirit Beast likely enforces pseudo-coercive manipulation on the owners of its coins in the form of semi-forced loyalty to Zhang Lei to himself; he guesses that Coventoba had kept the very first coin produced, which Zhang Lei was unaware of and likely had a value of '10', and wants to see what effects it has on him. Additionally, Kurapika notes Coventoba's presence as an excuse for him later on if asked why he had hidden the potentially manipulative ability of the coin during their conversation, since Kurapika had understood Zhang Lei to be asking for any abilities that could be used as a weapon to be kept secret.[11]

Abilities & Powers[]

Coventoba has received military training.[2]

Nen[]

Coventoba is a Nen user, although his superior Balsamilco believes him to be less knowledgeable than Hunters in that regard.[12] He has some awareness of the basic properties of conjured objects, shown in a discussion between him and Zhang Lei about the possible functions of the coins produced by his Guardian Spirit Beast. However, it is unclear how much more he knows, since Coventoba has been intentionally not giving Zhang Lei more information than necessary, since Zhang Lei's survival is an obstruction to Coventoba's superior Benjamin taking the throne of Kakin.[8]
