Synopsis[]

Killua and Illumi

Killua and Illumi face off

Upon revealing his true identity, Illumi informs Killua that their mother is pleased to see him grow. Still, harbors concerns about him venturing out alone. When Illumi inquires about Killua's motivations for wanting to be a Hunter, Killua candidly replies that he has no intention of pursuing that path; he merely feels bored. Illumi, pleased with Killua's honesty, nonetheless seeks to dissuade him from considering the Hunter path, asserting that the life of an assassin represents the only viable option. As Illumi persists in his attempts to discourage Killua, he emphasizes that becoming a Hunter is merely a distraction from the realities of their family's legacy. He expresses apprehension over Killua's desire to form friendships, particularly with Gon, and attempts to undermine those connections. Illumi further endeavors to instill in Killua the values and practices of an assassin.

Leorio intervenes in the discussion, urging Killua not to listen to Illumi, asserting that he does not need to do anything since he is already Gon’s friend. In response, Illumi warns that being friends with Gon could lead to significant problems, as assassins do not require friendships, which only complicates matters. He declares his need to kill Gon. This statement frightens Killua, prompting Illumi to approach Gon’s quarters. However, Leorio, Kurapika, and Hanzo block his path, preventing him from entering where Gon rests. Realizing that killing them, along with Gon, would ultimately hinder his success in the exam, Illumi reassesses his strategy. He understands that if he fails the exam, Killua and the other remaining examinees, including his brother, will become Hunters. Illumi decides to focus on passing the exam first, planning to kill Gon later, knowing that the committee cannot revoke his status once the exam concludes. He then threatens Killua, insisting that, to save Gon, Killua must defeat him, reminding him that he stands no chance against Illumi or anyone more powerful. As he approaches Killua, he speaks manipulatively, reaching out toward him while warning him not to move and continuing to issue threats.

Killua after killing Bodoro

Leorio encourages Killua to stand up to Illumi, assuring him that they will protect Gon at all costs. Much to their surprise, Killua surrenders. Illumi expresses satisfaction with Killua’s decision to quit, claiming he does not want to fight him, only to reveal that he is joking and has no intention of killing him. Overwhelmed, Killua sits lifelessly in a corridor. As the match between Leorio and Bodoro approaches, Killua unexpectedly stabs Bodoro in the back, resulting in his disqualification and the abrupt end of the Hunter Exam.

Upon hearing the news, Gon rushes to the briefing room, where Chairman Netero addresses the other Hunters. He confronts Illumi, demanding an apology for Killua. Illumi dismisses Gon’s demand, prompting Gon to assert that Illumi is unfit to be Killua's brother. Illumi questions whether any qualifications exist for being a brother. In a fit of anger, Gon forcefully pulls Illumi from his seat, stating that there are no qualifications for friendship either. He tightens his grip and insists that Illumi bring Killua back and separate him from their family. Illumi counters that Killua leaves of his own free will, but Gon believes Illumi has brainwashed his brother. Netero then interjects, informing Gon that the issue of Killua’s possible brainwashing is already under discussion. Leorio and Kurapika voice their concerns on Killua’s behalf. Kurapika explains that it has become evident they believe Killua has been hypnotized and that his actions are not his own. Leorio adds that if Killua intends to help him win the match, they are mistaken, as Killua’s actions ultimately lead to his own failure in the exam rather than Leorio's.

Netero explains that the arguments presented are mere hypotheses with no supporting evidence. The discussion shifts to the match between Leorio and Bodoro, with Leorio believing he holds the upper hand despite Bodoro's experience. Leorio’s youth gives him an advantage, especially since Bodoro is not in peak condition. Pokkle questions Kurapika's victory, suspecting that he and Hisoka have made an agreement based on Hisoka’s earlier match with Bodoro. Kurapika, however, dismisses Pokkle’s claims, sarcastically mocking him for winning by default. Gon intervenes, asserting that arguing serves no purpose since all of them have passed the exam. He adds that if anyone believes they are undeserving, it is up to them to prove otherwise through their actions. Gon then expresses his belief that Killua is fully capable of passing the exam but feels sorry for Killua’s disqualification. He directs his anger at Illumi, accusing him of turning Killua into an assassin and forcing him to kill against his will. Gon declares his intention to take Killua away from Illumi and their family. When Illumi tries to touch him, Gon swiftly steps back, ready to defend himself.

Netero steps in, stating that no decisions will be overturned and officially announcing the end of the Hunter Exam. He congratulates the seven participants who successfully pass. Unwilling to let matters rest, Gon confronts Illumi, demanding to know where Killua is.
