Disband × Party × Unpleasant Ties (解散×パーティ×くされ縁, Kaisan × Pāti × Kusare En) is the 31st episode of the original Hunter × Hunter anime. It first aired on June 10th, 2000.
Overview[]
Gon doesn't believe that Killua left on his own accord and wants to find him. He fights Illumi for information, and Illumi is about to kill him when Hisoka shows up. Illumi tells Gon that Killua is at the Zoldyck family home. Leorio is going to medical school, and Kurapika is to leave for his first job when they both change their minds and decide to help Gon find Killua.
Synopsis[]
Illumi and Hisoka speak outside in the courtyard of the final exam location. Illumi expresses his disappointment in how the Hunter Exam ended so quickly. At the same time, Hisoka says he's okay with how things turned out since he found Gon as a result. Illumi explains how Gon may pose a lot of trouble for Illumi in the future, to which Hisoka calmly threatens Illumi about not touching Gon, and Illumi drops the subject and walks away.
Inside the building, Beans explains the rules and benefits of the Hunter License to Gon, who missed the explanation previously due to his injuries. However, Gon is completely distracted, only thinking about confronting Illumi about Killua's whereabouts soon since the new Hunters will depart the next day.
Hanzo amicably approaches Kurapika and Leorio, who are respectively using a hookah pipe and drinking tea at a table in the lobby of the hotel where the new Hunters are staying until the next day. He asks the two to join him on a trip to town to pick up some souvenirs. They both turn him down, with Leorio saying he's too broke to go, and Hanzo gets annoyed at them. Pokkle joins Hanzo's side to ask if the two are waiting for Gon. When they confirm that's why they're waiting around, Hanzo understands and leaves.

Kurapika and Leorio are approached by Hanzo
Pokkle sticks around and apologizes to Kurapika for their previous argument when they were getting their Hunter Licenses. However, Pokkle is in much better spirits now and tells Kurapika and Leorio about his goal to travel around the world and discover new species of creatures. Once Pokkle walks off, Leorio expresses his envy of Pokkle's excitement. He worries over how difficult a mission it will be for them to get Killua back.
Beans continues to explain things to Gon, who is clearly not paying attention. The clock strikes three, and Gon is technically free to go, so he runs for it out of the room even as Beans tries to get him to stay for the rest of the explanation. As he runs by Netero, Netero trips him and tries to test his knowledge. Initially, Gon is unable to answer, and has to return to his seat. However, Gon eventually remembers something Satotz had told him previously and manages to come up with an answer for Netero. Netero accepts the response and dismisses Gon, who runs off.
In the hotel lobby, Gon speaks with the worker at the front desk before running into the elevator, trying to figure out if Illumi would still be in the hotel and where. As the doors close on Gon's elevator, he catches sight of Illumi disguised as Gittarackur and gets wedged in the closing doors trying to run out after him. He manages to get out, but Illumi is gone by then and doesn't seem to hear Gon yelling after him or likely chooses to ignore him. During the commotion, Leorio and Kurapika notice Gon and stop him from running after Illumi.
Leorio tries to convince Gon that Illumi won't give him the information he's looking for and to not go after Killua alone. He warns Gon that making enemies with the Zoldycks is not a good idea, but Gon insists that he doesn't believe Killua left the exam of his own accord and needs help. Kurapika agrees that Killua seemed strange when he left but isn't entirely convinced. Gon runs off without the two, upset.
Gon walks out into the courtyard, where Illumi had been waiting for him undisguised. Illumi offers to fight Gon for the information he wants about Killua. Gon immediately lunges at Illumi, but Illumi can easily dodge and grab Gon's non-broken arm. While Illumi tightly squeezes Gon's arm, Gon gets the same cold, evil feeling from being in contact with Illumi that he had gotten previously. Gon jumps out of Illumi's grasp, and Illumi repeatedly throws sets of needles at Gon, who continues to dodge them. Illumi decides against Hisoka's wishes not to kill and hits Gon with a needle. Gon falls to the ground in pain. Illumi intends to kill Gon with a needle, but Gon manages to escape the attack using his fishing rod. He swings in the air, and with Illumi temporarily unable to see Gon because of the sun, Gon slams into Illumi and knocks him over.

Illumi bleeding
When Illumi gets up, his mouth is bleeding and he says he was impressed with Gon's attack. Illumi insists that Killua left the exam of his own accord, despite Gon not believing him. Illumi goes to kill Gon again, paralyzed by Illumi's previous touch. However, before Illumi can throw his needle, Hisoka appears on the sidelines, and Illumi immediately backs off. While walking away, he relents and tells Gon that Killua is back home on Kukuroo Mountain.
Illumi tells Gon to stop following him now that he knows where to go to find Killua. He walks off, and Leorio and Kurapika join Gon's side. The three have no clue where Kukuroo Mountain is, but once at a computer, Kurapika uses his Hunter License to surf the internet and gain some information about the place. He tells them the trip there will take three days, and Leorio asks Gon if he's serious about going. After Gon responds in the affirmative, Leorio uses his license to try and search for Gon's dad. Leorio finds a result for him, but cannot print the information about him. Kurapika claims that Ging is classified in the database and that Gon's dad must be very important.

Kurapika uses cyberspace to find out about Kukuroo Mountain
That night, on the way to the ceremony for the new Hunters, Gon stops to ask Satotz about the card given to him by Kite that he originally thought was a Hunter License. Satotz explains that it's a certification for a Double Star Hunter, belonging to Ging. Satotz tells Gon a bit more about Ging's accomplishments but claims Ging is a total mystery, and that he's never met him in person.
At the ceremony, Hanzo takes pictures of the new Hunters and a drunken Menchi. Pokkle is surprised to hear that Leorio, Kurapika, and Gon will be going their separate ways. Leorio and Kurapika explain how different their goals are, while Gon stands alone on the balcony, thinking about his memories with Killua.
Illumi and Hisoka are not shown at the ceremony, but show up the following day when the examiners see the new Hunters off. Hanzo hands out his business cards to Leorio, Kurapika, and Gon, telling them to keep in touch. After saying their goodbyes, everyone but Hisoka and Illumi walks off. Hisoka tells Illumi not to touch Gon again, and Illumi agrees, uninterested in making enemies. Illumi asks about Hisoka's current plans and listens to Hisoka ramble about Gon's future potential.

Kurapika and Leorio decide to go with Gon
While walking off, Gon thanks Leorio and Kurapika for all they've done and says his goodbyes. After Gon runs off, Leorio and Kurapika stumble over their goodbyes to each other and end up both agreeing that they could still pursue their dreams while helping Gon get to Kukuroo Mountain. They run off after Gon, and the three board an airship together to begin their journey to the mountain.
