Without Nen × New Year × Hunter Exam (除念×新年×ハンター試験, Jonen × Shinnen × Hantā Shiken) is the 80th episode of the original Hunter × Hunter anime and the 2nd episode of the Greed Island final OVA series. It was released on DVD on February 18th, 2004.
Overview[]
Abengane seeks Biscuit and Gon's help. Killua exits the game to retake the Hunter Exam and passes. Gon continues training with Biscuit while the Bomber trio kills Nickes' Alliance.
Synopsis[]
All of the members of Nickes' Alliance are immediately engaged after Genthru outs himself as the Bomber. Jispa tries to attack Genthru from behind, but Genthru can strike him first using his ability, Little Flower, and Jispa explodes. Genthru explains his ability, Countdown, to the group and how to deactivate it to activate his bombs, which suddenly appear on everyone in the hideout. He informs the group of where they must meet him if they wish to trade their cards for their lives, the grasslands by the Shiso Tree, and then uses his book to teleport out of the hideout.
In the badlands, Gon continues to develop his Nen ability, working on Paper and hoping to be able to move on Scissors soon. Killua then shows off the amount of electricity he can generate between his two hands, promising it is even greater when he is well-rested. Gon is very impressed by Killua, but Biscuit thinks about how unfortunate Killua's upbringing must have been for him to be capable of such a thing.
Biscuit allows the boys some time off since she says New Year's is soon. Gon freaks out about hearing how much time has passed since it means Killua may not meet the Hunter Exam deadline that year. Killua asks Biscuit about how he could get out of the game in time, and the three go to obtain the card Transport Ticket, which, although typically difficult to get according to Biscuit, proves easy for the boys. Before Killua leaves, Gon tells him to let the family of Kiriko near Dolle Harbor know that he is Gon's friend, as they will bring him straight to where the exam hall and Biscuit gives Killua some training instructions for the duration of his absence.
Biscuit and Gon plan to return to Masadora to continue Gon's training. On the way, Biscuit gets Gon to train his Transmutation skills by having him practice quickly forming his aura into different numbers as she does during her tests. In the middle of this, Abengane teleports to them and introduces himself. Biscuit asks about the contraption on his shoulder, feigning her typical cutesy attitude while doing so, and Abengane tells them about Genthru. Although Abengane believes Genthru may be lying about parts of his deal, he believes they have no real way of fighting back against him right now. He asks Biscuit and Gon to avenge him and the rest of Nickes' Alliance, as they seem like the most reliable people he's met in the game. Abengane then left to try and spread the word about the Bomber to more people.
Nickes, Puhat, Nomdieu, and Assam go to meet the Bomber trio at the Shiso Tree to exchange the cards for the alliance's lives.
Abengane teleports to Bunzen and reveals that he had not told Biscuit and Gon about Genthru because they seemed reliable, but actually because they were the only other people he could reach in the game. He then lights a fire to perform an exorcism on himself using his Nen ability. The wooden doll he throws into the fire becomes a large beast who crawls towards him and sucks the bomb off of his shoulder. The beast then wraps itself around Abengane, seeming to have no intention of letting go, so Abengane puts on a large cloak and head covering to conceal himself and the beast, intending to hide for a while until he gets the chance to attack the Bomber.
Gon and Biscuit plan their next moves, deciding to focus on training to prepare to fight the Bomber eventually.
After completing the trade with the Bomber trio, Nickes demands that Genthru keep up his end of the bargain by removing his bombs from the alliance members. Genthru complies and gets Sub and Bara to perform a "release" with him. An explosion is heard, and Genthru sinisterly says that they have been "released", and explains that "release" was the detonation word for all the bombs. He chides the dead members of the alliance for ever trusting him, and the trio walks away.
Killua goes to meet with the Kiriko Gon told him about, who sniffs him and agrees he smells like Gon. They offer to take him to the location of the Hunter Exam as he wants, and Killua regales them with the stories of his and Gon's adventures following the last Hunter Exam.
In Masadora, Biscuit takes Gon to buy spell cards, believing that if the BombBomberlly did kill all the people in the alliance, there would finally be spell cards in stock at the shop. Just as she suspected, the NPC at the card shop informs them that a bunch of spell cards just became available, and they purchase sixty between the two of them. They plan to head out to train next, and Hisoka's shoes can be seen around the corner as he listens in on their conversation.
Killua makes his way to the 288th Hunter Exam and notices how many more people are there than the previous year. The Examiner arrives to give instructions to the group on the first phase. He claims that because so many people came this year, they need to get the number of participants down to just three hundred. He tells them all to fight each other and that they must take down five people and collect their badges before meeting him outside. The moment the door closes behind the Examiner, everyone begins to fight.
Killua quickly knocks out every other exam participant and brings all their badges to the Examiner, who is utterly shocked to see this. Netero arrives to inform Killua that he does not need to do the next phase at all, and the Examiner announces that Killua has passed the exam.
Gon struggles a little bit with his training, but still manages to impress Biscuit with how fast he progresses.
