The Greed Island Badlands ((がん)(せき)()(たい)()()()()()(), Ganseki Chitai—lit. "Rock Zone") are an area in Greed Island filled with numerous stone pillars and various monsters.[1]

Overview[]

The badlands are where Gon and Killua trained with their new teacher, Biscuit Krueger.[2] They repeatedly dug through the pillars using shovels until they reached Masadora, and then dug their way back to the badlands, also catching the many monsters that inhabit the area.[3][4]

Plot[]

Greed Island arc[]

Group Of Cyclops

Gon and Killua encountering the Cyclops

After Gon and Killua come out of the forest and reach the badlands, they immediately encounter multiple giant Cyclops, dodging their attacks and trying to land their own. Gon's punch to one of their faces does no damage, and Killua tells him to aim for the eye, climbing his way up one and kicking it in its weak point. The monster turns into its card, and Killua quickly collects it, with him and Gon dispatching so many that some even revert back to unconscious monsters. Killua says that every monster will have a pattern and weakness, telling Gon that they just need to stay calm and find the answers during combat. Gon assures him that Ging wouldn't have made a game that was unreasonable. As the two continue confidently toward Masadora, they soon encounter a Melanin Lizard that begins chasing after them.[1]

As Gon and Killua continue to struggle against the Melanin Lizard, Biscuit is seen watching them from afar. Gon is then struck in the face by a Hyper Puffball which begins to dart all around them so quickly that it cannot be caught. As they struggle against a Bubble Horse, Biscuit continues to analyze their mistakes. After Melanin Lizard returns, Gon and Killua are seen either running away from or being puzzled by a variety of monsters, with Biscuit becoming more and more frustrated that the two are wasting their talents. As the two struggle with yet another monster, Biscuit is unable to restrain herself any longer and yells out to them to use Gyo, eventually allowing them to find a Radio Rat.[2]

62 - Biscuit

Biscuit introducing herself to Gon and Killua

Biscuit then approaches them and asks why they didn't use Gyo if they knew how. They both clearly forgot, and she holds up her finger, again yelling for them to use the technique. They see the number "1" formed with aura, and she tells them that whenever she points her finger up (or they see something suspicious), they will use Gyo. She says that it will only improve with constant practice and should be as natural as their eyes shifting focus. Finally, she offers to teach them for free, but says that she won't go easy. As Killua is too busy being angry, Biscuit raises her finger, and Gon answers with the correct number. She orders Killua to do 200 pushups, and as the two of them get into an argument, Binolt stealthily observes the three and twirls a pair of scissors in his hand, proclaiming that he will rip them apart with his Scissor Hands.[2]

After Gon and Killua learn that Biscuit was Wing's teacher, she warns them about the dangers of the game and then senses Binolt's bloodlust nearby. The three develop a plan on the spot, and Biscuit is able to subdue Binolt on her own without even using Nen.[5]

63 - Binolt

Binolt surrendering to Gon

As Gon and Killua agree to Biscuit's training, Binolt regains consciousness, and Biscuit orders him to give her all his cards. She offers him a second chance, saying that if he can evade Gon and Killua's attacks for two weeks, she will let him go. But if he gets hit and either collapses or is unable to stand, she will kill him. The player revels in the chance to do whatever he wants to them as long as he doesn't get hit. Biscuit adds a rule that he has to stay in the area enclosed by a rock wall, clarifying that if he makes an escape, she will kill him. Biscuit tells Gon and Killua that they're not allowed to leave either, saying that they will receive punishment if they do or if they're unable to defeat him within the two weeks.138 After ten days, Gon and Killua work together to overwhelm Binolt, who finally surrenders and agrees to turn himself in when he leaves the island.[6]

Biscuit leads Gon and Killua to Masadora, with the three passing by an abandoned campsite and town on their way there. They then journey back to the badlands, and Biscuit tells Gon and Killua that they will now head straight toward Masadora and dig through any obstacles in their way. She also tells them that not only do they have to rest sitting up, but she sets up a contraption where the two will have to hold a rope tied to a rock placed directly above their heads. She tells them that she will also throw a knife to cut the rope once during the night, so they will need to stay vigilant even while resting. During their digging, the two eventually discover the advanced technique known as Shu. The two quickly have trouble moving and producing aura, but Biscuit is confident that they will improve in many ways from the training. She says that the first phase will be over once they reach Masadora.[3]

Biscuit Training Gon & Killua

Biscuit training Gon and Killua in Nen

They eventually reach Masadora for the second time, but Biscuit orders them to head back again, stating that this time they will be collecting the cards for every kind of monster they have encountered in the badlands. Gon eventually catches both a Hyper Puffball and a Bubble Horse, taking two weeks longer than Killua for the latter. Biscuit then teaches them about Ko and Ken, stressing that they will need to maintain latter for at least 30 minutes if they want to fight strong opponents.[4] As Gon and Killua continue their digging and Ken training, Biscuit introduces them to Ryu. The two boys spar to practice, and Biscuit believes that if they do so for two months, they will be able to spar at their top speed and then move on to the final phase.[7]

Gon and Killlua spar more quickly while using Ryu, and Biscuit praises their progress over two weeks, saying that she expected it would take two months. She tells them that it's time to go to the final phase, which is training by aura type. She stresses that they will learn their own type more quickly through all-around training.144 Biscuit introduces her Enhancement training and emphasizes that they will only work on one type each day, reminding them that the basics are important. After Biscuit explains the origins of rock-paper-scissors, Gon gets an idea and stands in front of a large boulder. As the aura charges up right around his fist, he utters, "Show me rock! Jan! Ken! Rock!" At the last word, he throws a strong right punch and completely shatters the boulder. Killua and Biscuit are both impressed, and Gon then does the same thing, but this time ends with "Paper!" After nothing happens, Gon asks Biscuit how to emit Nen, and she quickly replies that he needs to practice.[8]

65 - Gon and Killua

Gon remembering that the next Hunter Exam is soon

Killua then shows off his electricity, and Biscuit says to herself that they make a perfect team. Gon suddenly remembers that the Hunter Exam is soon and that Killua needs to apply. Biscuit tells them that the current date is December 29 and the application deadline is December 31. Gon wonders how Killua is supposed to leave the game, and the three head to Masadora to look for the necessary card.[9]

Walking through the badlands, the three celebrate after collecting their 50th specified slot card in only a month, but Killua says that things will only get harder since the cards they have collected so far have been A-rank or less, adding that it's hard to even find information about S-rank and above. He says that they will need to use "Guidepost" to learn where the cards are and then to ask around after that, but he also says that they can use the Risky Dice and "Lottery," which Gon and Biscuit quickly veto. Since they only have one "Guidepost" card, the group heads to Masadora to buy more spell cards.[10]

Asta In Meeting About The Bomber

The three joining Kazsule's alliance

The three are invited to a meeting in the badlands to join Kazsule's alliance, discussing the Bombers, how to stop them, and the various cards within the game. They eventually decide to go after "Plot of Beach" and head to Soufrabi.[11]

Gon and Biscuit are seen sparring in preparation for the former's fight against Genthru. Biscuit then begins an Emission exercise and calls it floating hand, doing a handstand and holding the position. She emits aura from her palm and propels herself around a foot off the ground. She says that Gon passes when he can reach the same height, but Gon struggles with the exercise. Killua asks Biscuit about her ability and says that knowing it will make it easier to come up with a strategy. Biscuit suddenly forms a woman out of aura and introduces her as Cookie, whose shiatsu massage improves blood circulation and eases constipation and stiff muscles. Killua is left speechless and asks if that's all her ability does, but Biscuit happily tells him that she also does Swedish and rolling massages (and much more). As the two yell back and forth about whether the ability is useless or the best ever, Gon keeps trying to pass the level five Emission exercise.[12]

72 - Killua and Biscuit

Killua and Biscuit preparing for their plan

With Gon having made no progress after ten days, Biscuit tells Killua that they have ten more days left, but Killua replies that it all depends on Tsezguerra, worried that the trade won't be worth it. Biscuit proposes just using force to take the cards from Genthru's team, but Killua is sure that Gon won't agree to it. He focuses their attention on the plan, and as the two gaze up at an enormous rock, Biscuit asks if it will be big enough and Killua confirms that it will be.[13]

Gon continues to struggle with the Emission exercise, aware that they only have five days left. Killua asks Biscuit if she can give Gon some advice, but she says that it's different for everyone, worried that she may give him preconceptions and confuse him even more. Killua approaches Gon and tells him to stop practicing since his time is up. Gon says that they still have five days, but Killua says that they have created a strategy to beat the Bombers. Gon tries to assure them that he's close to completing the exercise, but they know that he isn't and tell him that they can't use something they can't rely on. Biscuit holds up a card and says that they will use it, with Killua adding that Gon will practice every day to perfect it. The group then sits down together, and Killua explains the plan to Gon.[14]

73 - Gon

Gon ready to fight Genthru

Gon maintains his Ren and holds a stopwatch in his hand; Killua and Biscuit look through the list of players and see that Tsezguerra and his team left the game 10 days ago. Biscuit wonders what's going on and says that the three-week deadline passed five days ago. Killua adds that they will lose their card data if they don't return that day, telling Biscuit that they need to wait for Goreinu to contact them. Gon stops the watch and celebrates, saying that he can do it perfectly every time and asking the two if he can go back to the Emission exercise. However, both Killua and Biscuit say that he needs a margin of error less than 0.1 seconds. As a disappointed Gon clicks the stopwatch again, Goreinu uses "Contact" on Killua and apologizes for not getting in touch sooner. After Goreinu discusses the situation with Tsezguerra and the Bombers, Gon first looks at the watch with a blank expression, but then turns it toward Killua and Biscuit with a smile on his face, showing the watch stopped at exactly one second. Both put on a smile, and Biscuit lets out a sigh of relief.[15]

While fighting Genthru, Gon thinks back to his training with Biscuit in the badlands, asking her how Genthru doesn't burn himself with his own explosions. She replies that he envelops his hand in more aura than he uses for the explosion. Gon clarifies by asking if Genthru causes the explosion after he uses Gyo on his hands. Biscuit confirms this and says that he must have a considerable amount of aura to make it work. She uses the opportunity to practice with Gon, suddenly grabbing his wrist and causing him to use Gyo once she does. She praises his reaction time and repeats the exercise, but Gon notices that Biscuit used less aura the second time. She praises him again and says that the fight will be easier if he can tell the difference. Gon wonders what she means, and Biscuit explains that Genthru uses Gyo on his hands when he activates Little Flower, but he aims elsewhere and doesn't use Gyo when he's only pretending to activate the ability. She says that if he can tell whether Genthru is protecting his hand with Gyo or not, he will be able to block and counter some of Genthru's attacks.[16]
