Binolt (ビノールト, Binōruto) is a former Greed Island player and a high-class criminal despite being a Blacklist Hunter. He is wanted for committing numerous acts of murder without any apparent concrete justification.[2]

Appearance[]

Binolt G

Binolt's 2011 anime adaptation design

Binolt has short, spiky hair and a bony face set with bulging eyes and serrated teeth, giving him the typically ferocious appearance of a criminal.

Personality[]

Binolt is apparently a hardened cannibal, who loves to rip apart and eat his victims. His preferred prey are young women aged between 20 and 25 years (22 being his most sought after prey). However, Binolt has been shown to possess some martial arts etiquette, requesting to spar with Biscuit "as a martial artist" after learning her true age and strength.

Background[]

HxH2011 EP63 Binolt as a child

Binolt as a kid

Binolt was originally a shy and lonely individual, who began to hate other humans as a result of a traumatic event from his childhood. He came across a woman's purse on the ground in a back alley and wishing only to do a good deed, without asking for a reward, he attempted to return it to the woman. She and her boyfriend, however, assumed that he was the one who stole it, simply because of his appearance as a typical street brat: scruffy and dressed in rags. They promptly beat him and left him lying barely conscious on the alley ground.[3]

While lying on the ground, he saw a broken pair of scissors. He began to hate other humans, which most likely led to him becoming a serial killer.[3] At some point, he took the Hunter Exam and passed, becoming a Blacklist Hunter.[2]

Greed Island arc[]

Greed island stalked confront

Binolt with his scissors

Binolt first appears stalking Biscuit, Gon, and Killua within the Greed Island Badlands after the boys are formally introduced to their new teacher. As Binolt spies on the trio from afar, he notes that he will slice them into shreds with his Scissor Hands. Biscuit, however, senses Binolt's bloodlust and warns the boys that they should separate for the time being. After Biscuit sets off a mock argument ad heads off by herself, Binolt attacks her and manages to cut off one of her ponytails with his favorite scissors. He then devours Biscuit's hair and activates his Scissor Hands Nen ability, exclaiming that he will thoroughly learn everything about her. However, he is suddenly shocked to learn her true age and how well trained her body is. He puts away his scissors and takes off his belt, placing it on the ground and requesting to spar with Biscuit. She agrees and dodges his first strike, flipping him into the air and quickly dispatching him with a single strike. She comments afterwards that if the fight had involved Nen, she would have killed him.[4]

As Binolt lies on the ground twitching and coughing up blood, Biscuit calls the boys over and asks how clearly they observed the fight. The boys claim that the fight was a blur until Binolt was upside down in the air. Gon thinks to himself that Binolt isn't weak at all, and Killua notes that Biscuit is just that much stronger. Biscuit then explains that if Binolt were a card in the game, his rank would be D and he would have killed them (had she not been there). After Binolt eventually rises to his feet, Biscuit approaches him and demands that he open his book and turn over his cards, which he quickly does. Putting away the cards, Biscuit makes a deal with Binolt, telling him that if he can dodge the boys' attacks for two weeks, he will be set free. She adds, however, that if he gets hit and collapses or can't stand anymore, she will kill him. Surprised by the proposal, Binolt asks if he can do whatever he wants to them as long as he doesn't get hit, which Biscuit confirms.[2]

HxH2011 EP63 Killua vs Binolt

Biscuit adds that if he escapes the area surrounded by a rock wall, she will kill him. She explains to the boys that if they leave or don't defeat him within two weeks, she will give them some sort of punishment. Shen uses Binolt's name and asks him to confirm it, which he does. As Binolt fastens his belt back on, Biscuit climbs out of the enclosure and tells the two boys that he is Blacklist Hunter and a wanted criminal, adding that he loves human flesh and asking if 20-year-old women are what he prefers most. Binolt quickly corrects her by stating that 22-year-old women are his favorite. Although the boys are unnerved by Binolt's background, Biscuit begins the fight. Binolt immediately gets on his knees and touches his lower abdomen. The boys carefully observe this, and Biscuit scolds them for not attacking Binolt while he's trying to recover. Killua then makes the first move, but immediately moves back to dodge a swipe from one of Binolt's scissors (which grazes one of his cheeks).[2]

HxH2011 EP63 Gon vs Binolt

Killua realizes that if Binolt hadn't been injured, he would have lost his eye. Gon tries to make a move, but Binolt stops him by pointing his scissors at him. After both understand that they can't get any closer, Killua wonders if he should try out his electricity, but quickly dismisses the idea. Proceeding to pick up a small pile of rocks, Killua tells Gon to get some rest and that they will change shifts every six hours. Binolt chuckles and assures himself that he can recover from his injuries and go without rest for a week, confident that when his body heals, he will be able to kill the boys. Gon, on the other hand, approaches a large boulder and smashes it into smaller pieces after focusing his aura around his fist. He grabs one of the boulders and leaps toward Binolt, who realizes that Gon is using it as a shield against his scissors. Binolt quickly dodges out of the way and becomes irritated by Gon's strategy.[2]

After some time passes, the boys are both seen using boulders against Binolt and as they continue their onslaught, Binolt wonders how much stamina the two have and realizes that he won't be able to rest his body. Observing the fight, Biscuit says to herself that in less than a day, the boys have managed to pressure Binolt, even though he's in a weakened state. Binolt fearfully backs up, but bumps against a boulder and realizes that the boys have placed them everywhere. Killua tries to ambush Binolt with a distraction but fails. Gon then smashes one of the boulders he hid behind and causes the debris to pelt Binolt, forcing him to fly back and onto the ground. Killua sees an opening and tries to attack, but Gon stops him before he can land the finishing blow, figuring that it's best to keep going until they can deal with him one-on-one. Binolt chuckles at Gon's idea and claims that he will turn the boys into mincemeat.[3]

Unfazed by the threat, Gon tells Binolt that he will have to wait until the following day so he can get some rest. While Gon and Killua rest sitting against boulders, Binolt tries to stand up but is instantly detected by the boys. As Binolt reluctantly stays and tries to sleep, Biscuit says to herself that his Zetsu isn't perfect and that his overall potential is much lower than theirs. In Binolt's dream, he remembers an event that occurred in his childhood where he tried to return a wallet to a woman who had dropped it, but instead of being thanked, he looked at with disgust and beaten. Binolt immediately awakens from the dream and wonders why he thought of that memory. Later, the boys continue their onslaught against Binolt, and Killua realizes that Binolt isn't getting slower, but rather they're becoming faster. While the fight continues, Binolt remembers the aftermath of his brutal beating and stresses that he didn't want to be rewarded or even thanked for his action, telling himself that he just wanted to live as a decent human being.[3]

63 - Binolt

Binolt surrenders

After ten days pass, Gon stops his punch right in front of Binolt's abdomen, and Killua looks on while smiling. Binolt concedes and falls to his knees, beseeching Gon to kill him. Gon, however, thanks Binolt for helping them improve, leaving Binolt stunned. Due to Gon's mercy, Binolt promises to turn himself in and asks if he can go, which Biscuit confirms.[3] Binolt's name is listed in Gon's binder when the latter looks to see which players are dead or alive. A black dot is seen next to his name, meaning that Binolt is either dead or has left the game.[5]

Equipment[]

Scissors Belt: Binolt is seen wearing a belt with four pouches, each holding a pair of scissors. The scissors are used by Binolt as weapons as well as to cut the hair of his targets so that he can consume it for the activation of his ability.

Abilities & Powers[]

Biscuit rated Binolt's strength on par with a D-rank monster in Greed Island. According to her, he could have easily killed Gon and Killua before they fought him as part of Biscuit's training,[2] although the two boys surpassed him in only 10 days.[3] Binolt mainly fights with a set of scissors that is strapped around his waist; by cutting and eating his opponent's hair, he can learn everything there is to know about them. He is also confident in his hand-to-hand combat skills, although he was no match for Biscuit.[4] As part of Gon and Killua's training, he had to fight them continuously for several days, which vouches for a high level of stamina. He was also convinced that he could heal and fight without sleeping for a whole week. His recovery rate is also above average, since he was able to stand up and fight mere minutes after suffering internal injuries from Biscuit's strike. While injured, he was able to nearly blind Killua in one eye, with the former assassin claiming that had Binolt been in peak condition, he would have lost his eye.[2]

Nen[]

Binolt is a Specialist*.[1] He is a moderately skilled Nen user, enough to have developed an ability[4] and to be originally much stronger than Gon and Killua,[2] who had previously been capable of defeating some Nen users at the Heavens Arena.[6][7] He has shown proficiency in Zetsu and Hatsu,[4] and is presumably at least competent with the other two of the Four Major Principles: Ten and Ren. He might also be capable of accelerating his healing rate with Nen, which would suggest that he has some aptitude for Enhancement as well. Binolt is, however, unable to tend to his wounds in combat.[2]

Trivia[]

  • The names of his Nen ability, シザーハンズ (Shizāhanzu, lit. "Scissorhands") and 切り裂き美容師 (Kirisaki Biyōshi, lit. "Hairdresser Ripper")—especially the Viz translation "Barber Slasher", could be references to, respectively: Edward, a hairdresser/hairstylist skilled with scissors from the film Edward Scissorhands, and Sweeney Todd (a.k.a. The Demon Barber of Fleet Street), a fictional barber/serial killer who kills his customers which then have their flesh used by Mrs. Lovett to make pies—selling them to unintentional cannibal clients.
  • In both Hunter × Hunter Battle Collection[1] and Hunter × Hunter Arena Battle[8], Binolt has a card titled 食人鬼 (Jikininki, lit. "Cannibal Demon"), commonly known as "Human-Eating Ghost" in Japanese Buddhism.
  • Binolt is classified as a Specialist in Hunter × Hunter Battle Collection.[1]
    • His ability also resemblances Pakunoda's psychometry,[9] who is also a Specialist.
