Synopsis[]

Gasping for breath and dripping with sweat, Nicholas is left in disbelief at his failure as he desperately reminds himself that he was the best in academics and sports. As Nicholas drops his laptop and it shatters on the ground, the Amori Brothers surround the rookie and mock him incessantly. The three wonder how someone so pathetic made it that far and tell Nicholas to go home to his mother as he finally falls to his hands and knees. It's stated that Nicholas is the first dropout after 80 kilometers.

Chap 7 - Satotz leading the examinees up the tunnel's stairs

Satotz leading the examinees up the tunnel's stairs

Tonpa hands the brothers several bills and thanks them. The three praise Tonpa's ability to exploit an examinee's weakness, and Tonpa happily replies that he lives for it. He then thinks about the other rookies and reminds himself to stay alert since only one has dropped out so far. As the examinees turn the next corner, they find that the tunnel suddenly becomes elevated with a steep set of stairs. Satotz quickens his pace even more and leaves many examinees struggling to follow him, with Geretta guessing that it will cause the strugglers to drop out.

Now shirtless, Leorio gasps for breath and tries his best to keep pace. Kurapika asks how he's doing, and Leorio replies that he found more energy once he stopped caring about his appearance, telling Kurapika to pretend not to know him if he ends up removing all his clothes. Kurapika chuckles and realizes that Leorio has a point, throwing down his tabard and running beside him. He then wants to ask a question, but Leorio tells him not to waste his energy talking. However, Kurapika asks if money is really his goal, guessing that it isn't since those driven only by money never show such tenacity.

Chap 7 - Kurapika explaining his motives to Leorio

Kurapika explaining his motives to Leorio

After Leorio tells him that he doesn't know anything and several examinees are seen to have dropped out, Kurapika reveals that the Kurta Clan were targeted for their Scarlet Eyes, explaining that they are the clan's special trait and become a bright hue of scarlet when their emotions are stirred. He adds that the irises remain so if they died in that state and that it's considered one of the most beautiful colors in the world. Leorio asks if it's why the Phantom Troupe attacked them, and Kurapika painfully replies that the eyes were stolen from all their bodies, confidently stating that he plans to capture the Troupe and recover the eyes of his clan. Leorio points out that they may have already been sold on the black market to wealthy clients who can't be approached by normal people, but Kurapika tells him that a Hunter working for a rich client could obtain the necessary access and information.

Leorio then states that everyone hates contracted Hunters since they have no pride or honor, and only take jobs for small rewards. Kurapika calmly replies that his pride is nothing compared to how his brethren suffered. Leorio apologizes for not having such a complicated motive, again stating that he only wants money. Kurapika angrily replies that it isn’t true and reminds Leorio that not everything can be bought with money. Leorio counters by saying that everything has a price, even human lives and dreams. Kurapika can't believe his words, but Leorio states that it's a fact and finally reveals that his friend would be alive if he had been able to pay for his life.

Chap 7 - Leorio revealing the truth to Kurapika

Leorio revealing the truth to Kurapika

Kurapika asks if he was ill, and Leorio explains that a surgery could have saved his life, but that he couldn't afford the ridiculous cost. He reveals that he decided to become a doctor so he could cure a child with the same disease and then tell his parents that they didn't owe him anything. He angrily points out how expensive it is to even try to become a doctor and stresses that he wants money because it's needed for everything. Running behind him, Kurapika is left with a slight smile on his face. It's then stated that 37 examinees have dropped out halfway up the stairs.

Gon and Killua are seen at the front of the group right behind Satotz. Killua explains that climbing slowly will tire a person out more quickly, wondering if the rest of the exam will be as tedious and boring. Gon then asks him why he wants to become a Hunter, and Killua reveals that he doesn't, explaining that he's only interested in the exam because he heard it was difficult. He expresses his disappointment with the First Phase and asks Gon the same question. Gon replies that his father is a Hunter and that he wants to be just like him. Killua asks what his father is like, but when Gon honestly replies that he doesn't know, Killua is left surprised at first and then laughs as he calls Gon weird.

Chap 7 - The examinees reaching the end of the tunnel

The examinees reaching the end of the tunnel

Gon explains that he has been raised by his aunt since he was a baby and that he has only seen a picture of his father. He then tells Killua that he eventually met a man named Kite, who told him a lot about his father. Kite had recounted many of Ging's accomplishments such as discovering the Lurka Ruins, establishing a breeding program for the Two-headed Wolf, excavating the Congo Gold Vein, and eliminating the Kute Gang of Thieves. He had also mentioned that Ging could be a Triple-Star Hunter if he actually wanted to apply for the rank. It's then explained that Triple-Star is the highest rank among Hunters, with less than ten in the world and strict requirements such as achievements with global ramifications or important historical discoveries.

Killua wonders if his father is really that amazing, and Gon stresses that Kite seemed prouder of him than he did of himself, happily explaining that it's why he wants to follow in his father's footsteps. The examinees suddenly spot the exit full of sunlight, and Hanzo is eager to finally get outside, with Kurapika telling Leorio that it's only a few more steps. The examinees catch their breath and take in the view, with many of them wondering where they are. Satotz explains that it's the Milsy Wetlands, also called the "Swindler's Swamp", and that it will be the next section of the First Phase. He then warns them that the environment is filled with devious and hungry creatures that will trick them to catch their next meal. He tells the examinees to follow him and stay alert, stressing that if they are tricked, they are dead.
