Chatting × Excuses × Endurance (おしゃべり×ヘリクツ×根くらべ, Oshayberi × Herikutsu × Konkurabe) is the 28th episode of the original Hunter × Hunter anime. It first aired on May 20th, 2000.

Overview[]

The next fight is between Hanzo and Gon. Gon tries his hardest against Hanzo, though he is no match for the ninja. Hanzo severely injures Gon by breaking his arm, but Gon will not admit defeat. Gon feels that if he is to ever find his father, he must pass the Hunter Exam now.

Menchi questions the match between Gon and Hanzo, it's noted that Hanzo has an unfair advantage towards Gon relating to their grades and in terms of power and skill set. However, Satotz states that Gon's overall impression made Netero ranked him higher. After a brief conversation between Hanzo and Masta the referee of the match, Gon confidently believes in his skills and has set his plan to fight his opponent. Using his speed Gon runs around the area, but Hanzo is keeping up with him with ease, then Hanzo landed a chop at the back of Gon's neck putting down Gon. Hanzo then helps Gon to stand up for him to stay awake. Gon unsteady from the attack was asked by Hanzo to just quit, refusing to quit Hanzo then slaps Gon behind his back.

Hanzo then repeatedly tries to talk Gon into quitting upon refusing again Hanzo slams his head to the ground. Leorio, being worried shouts at Gon encouraging him to quit, but Kurapika who's in the same situation not long ago, tells Leorio that they would do the same if they are in Gon's situation. The examiners, Menchi in particular continue to questions Chairman Netero's method showing their concern towards Gon. Refusing to quit, Gon stands up only to suffer the effects of Hanzo's previous attacked losing his sight for a short period, relying on his sense of hearing he tries to attack Hanzo, Hanzo then counters and proceeds to crush his right ear. With one ear working, Hanzo then continues to encourage Gon to quit but Gon decides to stand up, relying only on his left ear then Killua throws a bottle of water to Gon to get refreshed.

In a span of three hours, Gon continues to take damage from Hanzo. Other examinees aren't able to watch the match considering the beatings Gon is taking. Hanzo then tells Gon that he underestimates him for not using his Fishing Rod against him believing he is not worth using a weapon on. Gon then tells him he doesn't underestimate any opponent, then proceeds to tell Hanzo the reason why he did not use the Fishing Rod, as he wants to win the final phase without using the Fishing Rod of his father who had helped all through his journey before the current event. Not convinced with Gon's reasoning Hanzo then continues to attack Gon who is helpless while on the ground. Leorio who can't handle the scene shouts at Hanzo then tells Hanzo to fight him instead, the referees then intervene and warn Leorio that if he interferes with the match then Gon will be disqualified. Upon hearing Leorio, Gon thanked him, struggling to get up he tells Leorio that there is nothing he cannot handle that he will keep on fighting.

Pissed at Gon, Hanzo pins Gon then warns him that if he doesn't he will break his arm, Hanzo proceeds in breaking his arm as Gon refuses to quit. As the audiences continue to watch and hear Gon screaming in pain, Leorio whose at his limits tries to tell Kurapika to not stop him if Hanzo lays one more hand on Gon, Kurapika replies that he isn't planning to stop him, as he won't be able to control himself.

Then Hanzo suddenly starts talking about his past and took his time talking about it, Gon who gets enough strength due to Hanzo's continuous mumbling, took his chance and lands a kick towards Hanzo's face which brought Hanzo to the ground. Suddenly the atmosphere surrounding the area change. Hanzo back in his feet suddenly pulls out his weapon under his sleeve then warns Gon yet again asking him to surrender otherwise he will cut his legs, Gon in all seriousness tells Hanzo that he doesn't want his leg to get cut, but neither wants to lose then tells Hanzo to settle the matter in another way. In disbelief, Hanzo ludicrously tells Gon that he is not in a position to negotiate, watching the scene unfold examiners and other examinees were surprise and laughs at the situation. Hanzo who is stress out continues to tell Gon about his situation then Gon tells the referee that if Hanzo cuts his legs then he will die resulting in blood loss then Hanzo will be disqualified, Gon then proceeds to convince Hanzo to settle their fight in another way as Hanzo is speechless. Satotz finally sees why Gon ranks higher based on his overall impression, as Gon has a very rare quality bringing people closer to him, Judges, who were supposed to be in the neutral side suddenly routes for Gon as well as the examinees.

Hanzo instantly went serious then points his weapons toward Gon's forehead then tells Gon that killing him won't be a problem as he can try to repeat the exam next time, Hanzo losing his patience and questions Gon on being stubborn, refusing to quit, risking his life when he can still have another chance to try again. Gon responds and said that the reason he doesn't want to quit is because of his father he wants to find him and if he gives up now then he won't be able to find him. Hanzo went on to tell Gon that he is finished, pulling up his weapon in a striking position as a drop of blood falls to the ground.
