Gaki (()()()()()()()()()(), Gaki—lit. "Hungry Ghost") is a character that appears in Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission. He was an On user and one of Jed's right hands.[1]

Gaki's design

Gaki was an imposing, tall, muscular man with a blue and white mohawk with dark shaved spots of his natural hair color and a blue goatee. His main outfit in Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission consisted of a dark red and black vest with no shirt underneath, a red belt, and black pants. His short-sleeved shirt and pants he wore as a child followed the same color scheme.[1]

The beige cloak he sometimes wore matched that of his comrade Shura, as did his knee-high boots. He wore bands around different parts of his body, namely dark red ones on his upper arms as an adult and black bands around his ankles as a child. As an adult, he also wore thick silver and yellow bracelets on his wrists and a small gold hoop earring in each ear.[1]

It is unknown if Gaki possessed a brand from Kanan Prison Camp like Rengoku had; given that they escaped from the Hunters at the same time as each other, it is likely that he had one as well, but it is never shown throughout The Last Mission.

Personality[]

Gaki was a rambunctious man, louder than his two comrades and often eager to fight.[1]

He, like Shura and Rengoku, was filled with hatred and held a grudge against the Hunter Association, which led to him and his two friends forming a contract with Jed and becoming On users.[1]

Still, despite his hatred, he was depicted as more sympathetic than Shura ever was towards Hunters. After his battle with Gon and Killua, Gaki still chose to warn the two boys that he was going to explode because he lost to Hunters, giving Killua and Gon time to get away from him before he detonated, ultimately saving their lives.[1]

Background[]

Gaki, like Rengoku and Shura, was a descendant of members of the Shadow, and was therefore banished to live in a village in the mountains after the Shadow itself and its members were destroyed by Netero. He was described as living peacefully as a child with the members of his community in their mountain village until, eventually, the nation and Garcia no longer wanted any descendants of the Shadow to exist, and so they were persecuted, which later led to them revolting.[1]

Garcia then insisted on removing the descendants completely, and so the descendants were captured by Hunters and put into Kanan Prison Camp, where the living and working conditions were described as harsh and depraved. Although many of the descendants of the Shadow died while living in the prison camp, Gaki, along with Shura and Rengoku, escaped as children.[1]

These events led the trio to seek out a way to revive On, which eventually led to the reincarnation of Jed, whom they then made a contract with by offering up their lives in order to achieve the revenge they sought against the Hunter Association.[1]

Plot[]

The Last Mission[]

Gaki is first seen in Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission alongside Shura, Rengoku, and Jed as they trudge through the snow to arrive at a small outpost town during a blizzard. They free the prisoners imprisoned there to get them to join their team for their upcoming mission at Heavens Arena, where they plan to take the Battle Olympia spectators hostage in order to force the Hunter Association to release the Black Report to the public.[1]

On the first day of the Battle Olympia, Gaki and his comrades walk through the alleys of the Heavens Arena city to get to the tournament. They cross paths with Leorio in an alleyway, and Gaki knocks him out. Gaki asks Jed if they should kill him, but because Leorio does not seem like a Hunter to them, Gaki spares his life and instead throws him down a sewer grate.[1]

The four of them are later seen in the crowd inside Heavens Arena while Netero makes his opening announcement. After Cocco finishes introducing the Battle Olympia event and the mascots come out to dance, Gaki reaches his hand out towards Rengoku, perhaps trying to instigate a fight, but she slaps him away with little effort. Shura tells the group to meet again in Nirvana once their mission is over, and Rengoku, Shura, and Gaki dash off in different directions, leaving Jed behind.[1]

While his comrades are off doing their respective tasks, Gaki confronts Kanjiru in the entryway leading into the arena before Kanjiru and Zushi's fight is set to begin. Gaki knocks him out and takes his place as Zushi's opponent, keeping his cloak on and hood up to disguise his identity before he enters the arena.[1]

Gaki reveals himself to Zushi and the crowd right before Shura cuts the cameras broadcasting the event and closes off the exits. Zushi steps up to fight Gaki anyways, which excites Gaki. The fight between them does not last long, however, and Zushi is left severely battered, bruised, and unable to fight, with Zushi only landing a couple of hits on Gaki.[1]

After Biscuit and Wing attend to Zushi, Biscuit confronts Gaki about the martial arts she saw him using during his fight, claiming it was of a style associated with the Shadow, and Gaki admits that he is a descendant of the Shadow. The two discuss the background of the Shadow and Gaki's upbringing for some time, before Gaki leaves to deal with the military members who have surrounded the entrance to Heavens Arena.[1]

Gaki easily disposes of the military members as well as their tanks, but does not harm any of the civilians or reporters stationed outside. Gaki informs Shura of his success, to which Shura tells Gaki about Gon and Killua's ongoing fight with the Floor Masters upstairs and displays live footage of it on a nearby monitor for Gaki to view.[1]

Gaki laughs, watching the footage, and insists that he gets to fight the two boys, so Shura rigs the elevator Gon and Killua go into to bring them directly to Gaki on an unoccupied floor. Gaki is able to hold his own against the two boys for quite some time. Gon eventually confronts Gaki about his motives, and Gaki is seen in two flashbacks, one from his childhood escaping with his two friends from the Hunters, and another from his adulthood where he and his two friends resurrected Jed and On.[1]

In the present, Gaki gets close to defeating Gon, but wishes he could have done so with an audience watching them. However, Killua is able to come to Gon's rescue, and together, they manage to overpower Gaki.[1]

As Gaki is sitting hunched over on the floor after his defeat, Gaki still tries to converse with the boys. Although Killua is uninterested or untrusting, Gon engages in Gaki's conversation. The boys tell Gaki that the kid he defeated, Zushi, was their friend, and Gaki seems to sympathize with their motives for fighting him. The three manage to make an amicable conversation in Gaki's last moments.[1]

On the roof, Jed appears saddened, seemingly aware that Gaki is about to die. Immediately after, an unseen force strikes Gaki in the chest, and the two boys rush to his aid, only for Gaki to insist that they stay away from him. Gaki explains that a condition of his contract with On/Jed is that he will explode if he loses a battle to Hunters. The two boys manage to get away in time before Gaki explodes and sets the entire area on fire, and the boys go unharmed.[1]

Afterward, Jed is seen on the roof sobbing in pain over Gaki's death, claiming him to have been much more than a friend to Jed and more like a blood brother. In the middle of his fight with Kurapika, Shura also stops to mourn Gaki's death.[1]

Abilities & Powers[]

Gaki has demonstrated considerable physical combat skills, being able to confront enemies like Gon and Killua alone, and overpower them for the majority of the battle. He also easily dispatched Kanjiru and Zushi, both of which are top fighters of the Heavens Arena, while suffering only one blow to the face. With his superhuman physical attributes, aptitude at bare-handed combat and dreadful On ability, Gaki is dangerous at all distances.[1]

According to Biscuit, Gaki uses a particular style of martial arts associated with the Shadow.[1]

Immense Strength: Gaki is able to crush tanks without breaking a sweat.[1]

Enhanced Speed: Gaki is capable of rather fast movements, which allowed him to be a threat to quick fighters like Gon and Killua, although he was confirmed to be slower of the latter.[1]

Advanced Agility: Gaki managed to battle Gon inside an elevator shaft with little difficulty despite his bulk.[1]

Enhanced Stamina: After confronting and single-handedly defeating two Floor Masters, he defeated a small squadron of soldiers, crushed a few tanks, and challenged Gon and Killua immediately afterwards without ever showing signs of weariness.[1]

Enhanced Durability: Gaki is highly durable, as he can block an Enhancer's punch with his forehead without suffering any damage or yielding ground.[1]

Enhanced Endurance: When Killua broke his leg, Gaki briefly winced in pain and resumed fighting immediately after.[1]

Proficient Hand-to-Hand Combatant: In a fight Gaki doesn't use only sheer brute force, in fact he has demonstrated a great degree of skill at close quarter combat as showcased in his fight against Killua and Gon not only by parrying their attacks but even countering them almost immediately. Killua considers Gaki and himself even in terms of hand-to-hand combat.[1]

On[]

As an On user, Gaki has access to all Nen categories (with the possible exception of Specialization). According to Killua, he has the mastery of an Enhancer, a Transmuter, and an Emitter, with also noteworthy skills in Manipulation.[1]

Trivia[]

  • The character's name literally means "Hungry Ghost"—in Buddhism, Hinduism, and other Asian religions, a preta: the spirit of a jealous or greedy person who, as punishment for mortal vices, has been cursed with insatiable hunger.
    • Gaki, as a derogatory Japanese slang, by extension (from the sense of someone who is always hungry), can also mean "an unpleasant child; a brat".
