Ging and Mito's Grandmother lives on Whale Island.[1]
Appearance[]
Ging and Mito's Grandmother is an aged woman with graying hair, which is always seen tied in a neat bun. She wears a matching white sweatshirt and sweatpants worn over a simple orange dress. A dirty yellow scarf is loosely wrapped around her neck. She is often seen smiling with her narrow eyes.
Personality[]
Ging and Mito's Grandmother is a cordial and honest person. She seems to like to tease Mito, especially concerning Ging.
Background[]
Most of what is known about her life comes from a single chapter. At some point in her life, decades before the start of the series, she gave birth to Ging’s father. She gave birth to Mito’s father at a later point. Shortly before her grandson Ging turned 12 years old, he left to take the Hunter exam. Soon after this, Mito’s parents died in an accident while on vacation and Ging’s father disappeared at sea. A decade later, Ging returned and asked for her to temporarily look after his two-year-old son Gon. Right as she was about to agree, Mito loudly objected and seized custody of Gon from him.[2]
Plot[]
Hunter Exam arc[]
Before Gon embarked on his journey to become a Hunter, she was enlightening Mito about how Gon has the blood of Ging in him and expects that one day he will leave his home just like other men do.[1]
Yorknew City arc[]

The grandmother with her granddaughter Mito, Gon, and Killua when the boys arrived at home
When Gon and Killua return to Whale Island from the Heavens Arena to visit Mito, she tells Gon about the truth about Mito's parents and Ging's father. According to her, Ging wanted her to take care of Gon for a while, but before she could say yes, Mito shouted that she would not allow Gon to be in Ging's care and later took the guardianship of Gon away from him.[2]
Succession Contest arc[]

The grandmother, Mito, and Gon eating together
She greets Gon when he returns to Whale Island along with Mito and is seen having dinner with them later.[3]

Trivia[]
- The name of Mito and Ging's Grandmother was never mentioned in the manga or either anime adaptation.
Anime and Manga Differences[]
- The Nippon Animation (1999 anime) adaptation of Hunter × Hunter changes the familial relationships between Ging and Mito's Grandmother. Mito was changed into her eldest daughter, whereas Gon's mother was changed to her youngest daughter. Ging was changed to be her son-in-law, and Gon was changed to be her grandson, rather than her great-grandson.
