Hari (ハリ, Hari)[1] is a side character from the video game Hunter × Hunter: Each One's Determination. She appears in Leorio's route. She is a female researcher escaping from Donal, only to be later blinded by one of his henchmen.[1]
Appearance[]
Hari is a thin young woman close to Leorio's height. She bears medium-length red hair, green eyes, and pink lipstick. Her complexion is pale. Her attire consists of a white lab coat over a red top and tan skirt, giving a mature look.[1]
Personality[]
Hari is a woman interested in the Madan's Book. She tends to keep to herself, outright avoiding Leorio during their second interaction, and does not tolerate anything that gets in her way. She can also be quite snarky and stubborn. As she begins conversing with him, and later Machi, Hari is occasionally depicted laughing and acting charismatic. Due to her presuming people already know what’s on her mind, she also has difficulties with explaining her thoughts.[1]
Background[]
Hari is a young woman who was raised in poverty. For this, she became interested in books and worked part-time at a library five years prior. Said library consisted of rare books. One of these was the Madan’s Book. One night in a tucked away room, she attempts to read it, finding its pages blank. The door suddenly begins to open. Fearing it to be the library’s night watch, she hides. Chrollo and Machi then step in. The duo steals several items in the room as Hari manages to avoid detection.
After they leave, Hari steps out of her hiding place. She then screams out, fearing they stole Madan’s Book, which alerts Machi. She then finds her; however, Hari lies about being a thief and claims to have only stolen one book. This has Machi decide to leave her be simply. Once the troupe properly leaves, Hari realizes that all the security guards are missing. At this, with the book, Hari proceeds to run away from the city. This eventually results in her meeting Donal, a researcher who takes the Madan’s Book for himself.
For three years, she was part of a research facility that looked into medicines, rare medical plants, and synthetic humans. The latter was of interest to Donal. However, she concluded that the only benefit this would give is enhancing or outright destroying human flesh. Feeling Donal would not put the Madan’s Book to proper use, she takes it for herself and runs off.[1]

Each One's Determination[]
Note: Events occurring in Each One's Determination are not canon material.
While Leorio is exploring the airship, he notices a red-haired woman in the warehouse. Before he can call out to her, she leaves. He soon makes his way to his room and runs into her once more, where she is in said room. She lies about it being hers instead. Believing him to be gone, she comes out, talks to herself, and mocks Leorio. Said man, then suddenly rushed back and yelled at her—right before being hit with her purse. After regaining his senses, he then notices a book. Said book is the Madan's Book. He takes it with him and proceeds to ask around the ship for information on the woman.[1]
While searching, he soon comes across a large pile of white bags and items in the warehouse. Leorio then recalls that the woman's purse is the same color and that she had mentioned a man named Donal. He thus concludes her to be escaping from him. Before anything else can occur, they suddenly run into each other once more. She briefly apologizes for her behavior beforehand as she mistook him for one of Donal's goons. Hari then inquires if he picked up anything, referring to the book. They thus decide to continue their conversation in Leorio's room.[1]
After revealing her name to Leorio, their conversation shifts. Hari reveals herself to be a stowaway and has no ticket. Thus, Donal is brought up. She claims not to want to be tied down and attempts to change to subject to no avail. Leorio concludes he is a self-center individual who cracks down heavily on those who oppose him—right before being hit by Hari once again, who was not finished talking. She instead claims him to be the head leader of the facility who informed her of the Madan's Book. Donal is specifically interested in synthetic humans (specifically cloning) and poisons while also being a member of a group of four. She concluded he wouldn't be using it for anything essential, so she took it for herself. She reveals that despite its pages appearing blank, there is text within, and the subjects inside are human medical procedures and herbs. As their conversation wraps up, Leorio offers to buy Hari a ticket as she promptly returns to her hideaway in the warehouse.[1]
During the night, Leorio suddenly hears a woman screaming. He soon finds her being attacked by a man looking for the book. Said man was one of Donal's test subjects. The med student proceeds to step in and defeat him. Despite this, Hari's vision is now blurry from being poisoned, and she receives a fever. Once they arrive at the shore, Hari stays at a nearby hospital as Leorio attempts to find a hotel. Throughout this time, he occasionally will check in on her or one of the Majtani clones in the hospital. During one of these visits, he finds Hari and the book missing, with Majtani in a dazed state. Leorio is forced to search for her. In the lobby, he suddenly discovers her talking to another woman: Machi. After the other woman leaves, Leorio and Hari return to her patient room.[1]
Here, Hari explains to Leorio her conversation with Machi. She reveals that she decided to temporarily give her the book in exchange of dealing with Donal and how she met her five years prior. It is also revealed that despite being blind, her other senses have significantly raised to compensate, such as her managing to reach the lobby before. When Leorio questions her on Nen though, she is confused on what he means. This is because she had been unconsciously using it to read the Madan’s Book without prior knowledge. After various questions, Leorio asks how she managed to be able to read the book. Despite some reluctance, she decides to explain. This results in her opening his aura nodes. However, she is unable to explain how to control his aura. From this, Leorio is bedridden for a day.[1]
After Leorio talks to an informant, he returns to Hari's hospital room the next day. They try again, this time with Leorio succeeding. With the Madan's Book back in Hari's possession, Leorio is then able to read it. The duo read through it together and discover that to cure Hari's blindness, they will need to go to the Milsy Wetlands to find darkness flowers. However, in the alleys, Leorio is told by Machi that she betrayed them and revealed Hari's location to Donal. After he is tied up by her, he states he'll try to convince Hari to let Machi keep the book so long as she protects Hari. Once Leorio finds a darkness flower, he returns to the hospital and gives the nurses it. This allows for Hari to begin undergoing treatment. However, instead of talking with her, Leorio silently takes the book with him and hands it to Machi after Donal's demise. He suspects her to be upset with him as he leaves without saying goodbye.[1]
Abilities & Powers[]
Naturally, as a researcher, Hari is efficient in the likes of science, such as medical science with chemistry. She also had an interest in books due to previously working as a librarian. Her knowledge is what convinces her to seek the truth into the book. She is also clever enough to sneak aboard the airship Leorio rides to escape Donal's goons and even avoid being detected in a room where Chrollo is. Hari was also able to prevent Machi from attacking when soon caught by her.
Nen[]
Hari is a Nen user efficient in Gyo. This is what allows her to read through Madan's Book even while blinded. Her usage of Nen in general is limited due to her unconsciously using it akin to Komugi. During Leorio's fifth chapter, Hari awakens his aura nodes, allowing him to use Gyo and indirectly begin the Secret Exam.
