After the Phantom Troupe's attack on the initial Underground Auction[3] and its subsequent rescheduling,[4] Mayor Jitonoda has the police force collaborate with the Mafia to establish a 1-kilometer radius security perimeter around the Cemetery Building. When Kurapika asks Light Nostrade about why the police are working with the Mafia, Light explains how Jitonoda's ties to the Mafia, combined with the police chief's loyalty to the mayor, make such an alliance possible.[2]
Greed Island arc[]
Following the Phantom Troupe's massacre at the Cemetery Building on the night of September 3rd[5] and the conclusion of the Southernpiece Auction, a newscaster reports about how Jitonoda attempted to assure auction-goers that Yorknew City would be safe for the annual auction, claiming the terrorists had been killed. However, despite the mayor's efforts, attendance ultimately dropped by 60% compared to previous years.[1]

Anime and Manga Differences[]
- Jitonoda's name is only given in the manga, as the news report in Chapter 129 where their name is mentioned is excluded in both the 1999 and 2011 anime adaptations.[1] The 1999 anime adaptation further excludes any mention of the mayor whatsoever when Light Nostrade tells Kurapika about the mayor's connections with the Mafia and influence over the police force.[2]
