"Have your parents ever told all your siblings to kill each other?! I'm not putting my life on the line because I want to."

— Kacho Hui Guo Rou to Melody, in "Ability"

Kacho Hui Guo Rou (カチョウ=ホイコーロ, Kachō Hoikōro) was the Tenth Prince of the Kakin Empire and the daughter of her father's sixth wife, Seiko.[3] She was the elder twin sister of Fugetsu.[2]

Appearance[]

Kacho was a relatively slender girl with large eyes, long eyelashes, and fair, shoulder-length hair. She dresses rather flashily compared to her relatively plain younger twin sister Fugetsu, but not as flamboyantly as her eldest half-sister Camilla.

In Kacho's first appearance, she wears a plain dark-colored dress with a flowery collar.[3] During the eve of departure festival, she wears a matching suit and skirt with Fugetsu. Later that day on the Black Whale, she wears a elegant dress with a large ribbon at chest-height and an ornate yet relatively simple necklace.[4] She wears the same dress to the departure ceremony the next day but with a different necklace.[1] She and Fugetsu match outfits once again at the banquet, turning up a light-colored top with a brooch below the collar, changing into matching light-colored dresses for a meal (where Fugetsu also wears a hairband), and finally adding flowers in their hair for their performance.[5][6]

Personality[]

Chap 359 - Kacho's personality

Kacho's fake personality

As noted by Melody, Kacho is terrifying and takes on a convincing shallow, spoiled, and generally detestable persona.[1] She chooses her bodyguards due to their appearances,[7] but, unlike Tyson, she chooses ugly ones. Despite her status as a junior prince, she is shown to be cold-blooded, intending to form an alliance with Fugetsu even before the Succession War starts to murder her other siblings, promising her that when she becomes the new ruler, she will request her father to spare Fugetsu.[1]

However, Melody claims that Kacho lies to herself,[1] and that her bratty, cold façade is due to the expectations placed on her, as well as a way to make sure that, if forced to choose between saving her and her sister, her employees will save the latter.[8] In reality, she resents being dragged into a fight to the death with her own family and cares about her twin sister deeply, crying while looking at photos of the two of them spending time together.[9]

She is fond of jewelry.[3]

Background[]

When they were children, Fugetsu and Kacho would often play together in a playground called "Magic Worm".[9] One of their favorite games was pretending to travel the world, and Kacho would always let Fugetsu decide their next destination.[10]

Plot[]

Succession Contest arc[]

Kachou

Kacho Hui Guo Rou, 10th Prince of the Kakin Empire

Kacho is first officially seen when Kakin's 14 Princes are introduced. Kacho is seen admiring a ring on her right hand, next to an intricate necklace in a glass display case. Kacho is seen wearing a simple black long-sleeved shirt, with a slightly fancier collar than Fugetsu, wearing a similar outfit. Kacho is one of six Princes to put up anonymous listings for bodyguards on Kakin's website. Melody applies to her listing and is contracted to become her bodyguard for the trip to the Dark Continent.[3]

During the eve (of the departure) festival, Kacho is seen with the rest of her siblings and Beyond on stage wearing a black suit with a skirt, holding hands with Fugetsu and waving to the crowd. Kakin's Royal Family is flown into the Black Whale 1 shortly after, where they reside on Tier 1 during the journey to the New Continent. Kacho is next seen attending a departure ceremony taking place in the ballroom on Tier 1 of the Black Whale 1 in a strapless light-colored dress and an ornate necklace attending to guests together with Fugetsu.[4]

Chap 359 - Kacho and Fugetsu

Kacho explains her plan to Fugetsu

On the day of departure, she attends a lunch banquet at the ceremonial hall wearing a similar dress with a simpler necklace. She is notified of her time to retire from the banquet by her father's personal butler, and insists that Fugetsu accompany her to the connecting corridor despite his reminder that only one Prince is to leave at a time. There, she asks Fugetsu to form an alliance, saying that once she wins the Succession War, she will ask her father to spare Fugetsu. She then leaves with her bodyguards, complaining about the perverted stares of an old man from the RG Foundation. Melody eavesdrops on her conversation and forms an initial impression about her employer, but listens to Kacho's heartbeat and realizes her bratty facade is a lie.[1]

Several hours after returning to Room 1010 from the lunch banquet, she knocks a tray of food to the floor, calling it disgusting and demanding that it be remade. Melody's advanced hearing allows her to hear Kacho's bodyguards and maids complaining about her in whispers. Melody worries that this act she believes Kacho is putting on, if done to protect herself, would backfire.[2]

Later that night, Kacho is contacted by Room 1014 and agrees to send two of her men to learn Nen under Kurapika.[11] She sends her servants Loberry and Yuri.[12]

Lessons begin at 9 a.m. the next morning in Room 1014. Sometime before the lessons begin, Loberry is possessed by an unknown party, allowing only Loberry and themself to see Silent Majority's marionette. After the lesson participants introduce themselves, Kurapika asks if any of them can use Nen. When Loberry looks around to see which participants raised their hands, she spots the marionette and begins to fluster because of its suspicious appearance. Eventually, she calls the class's attention to the marionette, unsure why the other participants are unable to see it. The Silent Majority user takes this opportunity to kill 7th Queen Sevanti's man Barrigen, sent by 13th Prince Marayam, while the class is distracted. As a result of Loberry's actions, Sakata contacts the Justice Bureau and has her arrested.[13]

Because of Barrigen's death, Supreme Magistrate Cleapatro dispatches an investigator to Room 1010 to monitor it for 72 hours.[14] Kacho is seen reading a book while listening to music through headphones as her mother, 6th Queen Seiko, gets questioned by the investigator.[15]

Late that night, at about 1:30 a.m. on the third day, Kacho cries in bed while looking at photos of herself with her twin sister. Suddenly, a hatch appears in her bed an opens, and Kacho sees Fugetsu cautiously stick her head through the hatch. After the initial shock, Kacho motions for Fugetsu quickly close the hatch and hide. Melody hears a change in Kacho's heartbeat and rushes to her side. At the end of an exchange where Kacho stubbornly refuses Melody's gentle attempts at coaxing her to open up, Melody determines that Kacho should know the truth, and asks Kacho if she could talk to her about Nen.[9]

Chap 377 - Kacho's resolve

Kacho expresses her resolve about the Succession War

Later that day, Kacho orders Melody to help her with her studies. While seemingly reprimanding her bodyguard, she uses a high-frequency device to communicate with her in Morse code, instructing her on how to find one herself.[16]

The next day, Kacho tells her mother that she wants to put up a performance during the Sunday banquet. She and Fugetsu would play the glass harp, and Melody would play the flute. She asks Seiko to tell Nasubi and Fugetsu about it and Seiko agrees, saying she would make a second appeal to Nasubi.[note 1] Right before Seiko leaves, Kacho confidently reminds her of her resolve to fight with dignity and price in the holy battle for to decide the glorious king of Kakin, bringing tears to Seiko's eyes. After Seiko leaves, Kacho puts on another act and stomps away with the investigator, loudly accusing her mother of just wanting to assuage her feelings of guilt as a cover to hide her use of the Mosquitone to relay her actions to Melody. Kacho tells her that they would likely perform at the banquet, that she would arrange for Melody and Keeney to stand by in a specific location, and that she would arrange to meet with Fugetsu. Melody tells Kacho to make sure that the speakers hear her performance throughout Tier 1 and that she will investigate routes. Melody quietly watches Kacho as she directs her bodyguards and servants to set up a table and bring out the glass harp.[8]

On the fourth day, Kacho lies on her bed and reads a fashion magazine with earbuds in while Melody demonstrates her skills in a small performance to Seiko and the investigator. Seiko is moved, and excitedly ensures to arrange that Melody's performance would be broadcast across Tier 1. Kacho and Melody exchange a small nod.[10]

Escape Attempt[]

Deathly Hands (383)

The ceremony punishes escape attempts

On the eighth day of the voyage, Kacho attends the banquet with her sister and personal bodyguard Melody.[5] Despite a few schedule changes, the twins will remain the last to perform, as per their plan. When they are about to execute their plan, Kacho reassures her nervous sister, stating that she never thinks about failure. They wear their headphones, and Kacho tells the overseeing guard it is in order to rehearse their piece. While Melody's performance keeps everyone in the upper tiers in a trance, Keeney leads the twins to the lifeboats. They thank him and board one. As they approach the exit, Kacho promises her sister that they will never be apart and that all they need is each other. However, Kacho perceives a terrible feeling and ghostly hands manifest all around them as soon as they leave the Black Whale. Kacho realizes that escaping the succession contest means death and urges Fugetsu to summon her magic door to return to the ship.[6]

Chap 383 - Kacho's death 2

Kacho dies on the boat

Fugetsu makes it inside the tunnel, but Kacho remains on the other side, meeting her demise. However, her Guardian Spirit Beast's ability is activated and it manifests as Kacho herself who opens the door again. Together, the sisters return to Fugetsu's room.[6]

In a flashback, as Theta prepares to assassinate 4th Prince Tserriednich, it's announced that there will be a surprise performance from the royal banquet for Tier 1 and Tier 2. It's added that the performers are Melody of the Hunter Association and Princes Kacho and Fugetsu.[17]

Chap 386 - Melody asking Kaiser about Kacho and Fugetsu

Melody asking Kaiser about Kacho and Fugetsu

After the incident at the banquet, Melody sits in the Justice Bureau on Tier 2. The investigator checks on her, informing her of the suicide note that Keeney left saying he acted alone in the twins' escape attempt. He also tells her that a few of the Princes were so impressed by her performance that they have invited her to their quarters. As he asks her more questions, Melody realizes that she is being kept for so long to protect her from the dangerous Princes. She asks about the twins, and he says that they are also being questioned and that they said Keeney forced them onto the lifeboat. However, he has no evidence to prove or disprove that they were forced or if it was their own idea, so he will continue questioning them. Melody thanks him, and plans to use the time she has to consider her next move.[18]

After Kurapika explains the details of learning Nen to Yuri, he adds that he hopes the battle for succession has no more victims and asks her to see if Kacho and Seiko would be willing to send more people to another round of classes. Yuri quickly agrees to ask, and Kurapika thanks her.[19]

With the introduction of Camilla's curse assassins, it is learned that Mozbe is assigned to curse Kacho. Sarahell considers cursing Kacho, Fugetsu, or 13th Prince Marayam, asking Fukataki for her opinion. Fukataki tells her that from Room 1002, Mozbe will take ten days. During their conversation, Nukuocon informs them that Kacho and Fugetsu are being held for an escape attempt, adding that they have heard rumors of fatalities. Sarahell worries about their rooms becoming sealed, and Fukataki points out that it will take more than six months if they are in the cells.[20]

Outside Room 1010, two guards stand in front of the doors as four soldiers surround them. Inside, Seiko uses the phone and tells them to hold off on the regulations until she gets her personal belongings organized, wondering why she can't see Fugetsu when she's a Queen and her mother. She again expresses her concern for Fugetsu and tells them that until then, cordoning off the room is unacceptable. Saying to herself that she should let others think Kacho is alive as long as possible, she yells to the soldiers that she will speak to Fugetsu when the time is right and that they must go through her, hanging up the phone. She then says to herself that while Kacho dropping out so early is a heavy loss, she hated the way her daughter looked at her and spoke to her like she knew everything. She adds that she was an important shield for Fugetsu and says that while she can control the latter, she's too weak to face the succession contest on her own, hoping that she can stay under the Justice Bureau's protection for as long as possible.[21]

Without You[]

Chap 400 - Melody distraught

Melody distraught over Kacho's death

At the Justice Bureau's interrogation office, Kacho speaks with Melody and the investigator that she was possibly resurrected as a Guardian Spirit Beast to protect Fugetsu. Normally, someone protected with a Guardian Spirit Beast is unable to see the Guardian Spirit Beast of other person, but Kacho says Fugetsu could see her current form. She also adds that if Fugetsu's aura is being used to maintain her appearance, it must have a considerable burden on her, feeling responsible for her weakened condition and wondering if her finding out the truth will reduce the burden. Shaking and tearing up, Melody blames herself for what happened, but Kacho orders her to pull herself together and to feel bad about it when she's alone.[21]

She assures Melody that it's what she wanted and that she doesn't regret it at all, adding that it actually makes things simpler. She declares that they will make Fugetsu King and that if they can't escape, they have to fight. She explains that since everyone thinks she's dead, they can use her suddenly turning up alive to their advantage. However, she adds that they need to keep her death a secret from Fugetsu. The investigator tells Kacho that she should let Fugetsu know that the people are under the mistaken impression that she died, confident that Fugetsu will accept the explanation since she exists. He says that while he is still trying to come to grips with ghosts and Nen abilities, he was convinced by the military's reports and Melody's condition. Melody says to herself that even in such a stressful situation, he's annoyingly calm and collected. The investigator then tells Melody that her unstable state of mind will make things more difficult and that she can't disappoint a young girl who is so determined and waiting for her. Kacho asks if she is in or out, and Melody agrees to help them.[21]

Chap 400 - Melody, Kaiser, and Kacho

Melody, Kaiser, and Kacho analyzing the situation

The investigator starts with Melody's problem and reveals that five Princes have requested to see her. He first says that the Third and Fourth Princes wish to speak with her in their quarters and to hear her performance in person. He then says that the First, Fifth, and Seventh Princes are more obvious, offering a "pardon" and requesting an "encore" of her performance. As Kacho wonders what he means by a pardon, Melody signals for him to keep quiet, and the investigator realizes that she means not to say anything about Keeney's death. He explains that the Princes have a better understanding of Nen abilities now and realize that Melody was involved in the escape attempt, revealing that they are using her performance as leverage since she could get the death penalty if she is convicted as an accomplice. Kacho realizes that the Princes want Melody to indirectly help with assassinations and nonchalantly says that it will lead to fewer Princes.[21]

Melody is taken aback by how harsh she is, and the investigator says that the higher-ranking Princes may have restrained themselves because there are still too many of them, which means there are just as many uncertainties. He adds that if they don't have a good idea of who is targeting whom, they could end up hurting themselves. Melody reveals that her ability is only intended to heal and that the loss of consciousness is a side effect, wondering if the Princes would give up if they knew that covering their ears would prevent it. The investigator points out that it's where they can use information and tactics to bargain, guessing that they will end up auctioning off "true performance time" among the higher-ranking Princes. Melody realizes that assassination and her performance go together as a set, and the investigator says that the best way to protect Fugetsu is to deceive all the Princes who have requested a performance, suggesting that they should wipe out all the higher-ranking Princes themselves.[21]

Chap 400 - Kaiser

Kaiser explaining his plan and expressing his love

After discussion with Melody, the investigator tells Kacho to return to the interrogation room and says that he will use the door since he can't pass through walls. As Kacho begins to move through a nearby bookcase, she wonders if he should interrogate her a little, but he replies that he's more worried about Fugetsu, telling Kacho that everyone would think she remained silent anyway. He leaves with Melody and meets Kacho in the other room, escorting her out and telling himself that the VIP witness protection area is the safest on the ship and that not even the First Prince could try anything there.[21]

Fugetsu's Condition[]

Chap 400 - Kacho concerned about Fugetsu

Kacho concerned about Fugetsu

Kacho returns to their quarters at the Justice Bureau, but Fugetsu doesn't respond when she calls for her. Kacho points out that they aren't allowed to leave their room since they're key witnesses, worried that Fugetsu used her ability to go somewhere else. She checks the bed and removes the comforter to find Fugetsu's outgoing door, explaining that if she's not with Fugetsu, it's supposed to be a one-way path where the entrance disappears once she passes through the exit. She wonders if Fugetsu is still inside the tunnel and worries that someone tried to attack her and that she used the ability to hide, considering the possibility that Kaiser, the Justice Bureau official, is their enemy. However, Fugetsu suddenly opens the door, and Kacho quickly grabs her hands and asks if she's okay. Fugetsu excitedly replies that she has made a breakthrough, revealing that while she could only use the ability once a day before, she can now use it multiple times. With heavy bags under eyes, she adds that the return door now appears even when she's alone and that even though she can only return to where she was, she can now explore on her own even when Kacho is resting.[21]

Kacho wonders if she's really okay, and Fugetsu excitedly assures her that she is, adding that she feels happy and empowered every time she uses her magic, hoping that the two of them can explore and use their magic skills to escape together. Left wondering if the ability really gets stronger with every use, Kacho grabs her sister's shoulders and tells her to take it easy since she's so pale. However, Fugetsu grabs Kacho's wrist as tears stream down her face, and she tells Kacho that it's her turn to protect her since she has been doing it for so many years. Taken aback, Kacho suggests that they rest and talk about it once they wake up. Kacho then meets with Melody and reveals that Fugetsu passed out, worried that it's not normal and saying that she can't figure out what's happening. Eager to help, Melody reminds her that she is also a key witness and won't be able to get anywhere near the two of them. She tells Kacho that she will have Kaiser arrange a time for her to meet with the other Princes and for Fugetsu to be interviewed so that they can pass each other in the hallway. Melody concluded that Fugetsu is under influence of evil power and needs to be exorcised.[21]

Melody is eventually visited by Vantine, the private military commander for the Fourth Prince, who says that while negotiations in public have no meaning, he would like to confirm a few things, with Melody noticing the mention of "negotiations". Vantine asks if she will accept the Prince's invitation to his quarters, and she replies that while she appreciates the offer, she can't decide on her own. Vantine wonders if it's because Kacho hired her as a guard, but Melody quickly answers that she can't respond to contractual matters.[21]

At 6:00 a.m. on the eleventh day, "Kacho" pops herself through the ceiling of Melody's cell and shows her a picture of a mark on Fugetsu's right shoulder blade, which they did not have before their escape. She describes it as a bug bite and Melody suggests it could be an injection site. "Kacho" says that it was not possible since they were brought to the Justice Bureau right after they went back to their room, making Melody revise her guess to be a mark made by Nen as part of a multi-step Nen ability and probably due to Fugetsu falling into a trap. Melody asks "Kacho" if Fugetsu had said something weird yesterday, and "Kacho" begins to have a bad feeling as she recalls Fugetsu's excitement at being able to use Magical Worm multiple times in a day. "Kacho" asks Melody if she means that an enemy ability is the reason for Fugetsu's belief that she could use her ability multiple times in a day. Melody tells her to convince Fugetsu to stop using Magical Worm. In confusion, "Kacho" asks if Fugetsu would really need persuasion to stop once she knows it is not her ability. Melody says that she hopes not, and that Fugetsu is showing signs of addiction. "Kacho" is upset to hear that and asks if Fugetsu has been injected with some sort of drug, calling it a terrible thing. Melody says that she could not think of any other explanation and that none of the princes who came to see her were responsible for Fugetsu's condition before she suggested finding out who was responsible. "Kacho" has an idea of who it could be.[22]

They continue their conversation a short while later with Kaiser in his office, where "Kacho" suggests that Luzurus was responsible, corroborated by the fact that he sells drugs to back the Cha-R Family. She suggests that it was the work of his Guardian Spirit Beast, then Melody points out that convincing him of what he was doing was impossible because he would not be conscious of its actions. "Kacho" says that the only way to stop Fugetsu's condition is to defeat either Luzurus or his Guardian Spirit Beast, and concludes that they should take action immediately. She shares that she already has a plan and lets them know that Fugetsu has been starting to test her ability; Fugetsu is unable to travel off the ship but can access the inside of an un-launched lifeboat and wants to test if people other than them can enter the tunnel. Melody says that she would need someone to carry an unconscious Luzurus into the tunnel, and "Kacho" agrees, wishing that Luzurus would be stupid enough to get on a lifeboat himself. "Kacho" says that Melody's ability would guarantee he enters one, and that it might be even better if they could poison or strangle him on the spot. Kaiser disagrees with her last point and says that it would be better to make it look like an accident and volunteer to be the person to carry him through the tunnel before suggesting that they carry out their plan. At the same time, they are getting questioned so that they could use the questioning as an alibi. "Kacho" and Melody exchange a look, and Kaiser elaborates with a plausible excuse using the fact that Luzurus and his guards did drugs.[22]

After listening to Kaiser's suggestions, "Kacho" asks Melody for her thoughts. Melody says that the plan sounds alright, but asks where Magical Worm's door would connect. "Kacho" and Kaiser look at Melody, and after Kaiser does not respond, "Kacho" correctly says that it would need to connect to Luzurus' master bedroom, meaning that Fugetsu would need to go there in-person. Kaiser does not understand, so they explain that Fugetsu must have been to a place before being able to travel there with Magical Worm. Kaiser volunteers to arrange so that she can, and asks them to come up with a reason why she has to meet with each Prince. "Kacho" catches on to his wording and checks if he meant to suggest visiting more Princes than just Luzurus. Kaiser explained that maximizing the places she could visit was best and that it could be useful later. She agrees and suggests writing a letter containing her last message to each Prince. Kaiser reasons it out and agrees with it, and "Kacho" points out that some Princes might not let them in and personally accept the letter, whether because Fugetsu was a lower-ranked Prince or because they had something to hide like Luzurus likely did. As Kaiser imagines a way of doing so, "Kacho" and Melody look at him. He looks up to see them staring at him and asks if he has already explained why he was helping them so much. "Kacho" and Melody watch him as he shares his vision for the world, one where Fugetsu took the throne, where having "Kacho" beside her could protect her from their mother's meddling.[22]

Fugetsu is escorted by Kaiser and the Ministry of Justice to Tier 1's VVIP area, where they explain to the guards stationed outside Benjamin's residence that Kacho had passed away but had written letters to personally hand to each Prince if she died. After Fugetsu enters, Benjamin sees the spirits plaguing her and guesses that she was despondent after Kacho's death. Fugetsu next visits and passes a letter to Tubeppa and 6th Prince Tyson each before proceeding to Luzurus' Room 1007. Luzurus apologizes to Fugetsu about Kacho, and Fugetsu thanks him for his kind words as she passes Kacho's letter to him. He begins reading it, and asks Fugetsu if Kacho had told her anything about its contents, or if all the letters were the same. Fugetsu says that Kacho never had a chance to tell her, and Luzurus guesses that it is because she did not want to get Fugetsu involved. He decides to pass the letter to Kaiser, who pretends to read it, having been the person who told Kacho what to write in the first place.[22]

Kaiser thinks back to their earlier conversation, where he suggested turning Kacho's letter into an information "bomb" containing information that the Ministry of Justice had gathered on the Princes. Melody asks how Kacho would have known the information that the Ministry of Justice had gathered. Kaiser says that he would be present as Fugetsu delivered the letter to help deflect questions that dug too deep into Kacho, and says that he did not intend for her to return to Tier 1 until the succession contest was over.[22]

As Kaiser reads the letter, Luzurus contemplates the odd feeling he had about its contents. He wonders why Kacho's last message wasn't to ask for protection for Fugetsu, but instead had bombshells about the other princes. He thinks that because Kacho is smart, each letter has different contents and could be a way to get him and Tserriednich to fight while Kacho goes to Benjamin and gets his help to protect Fugetsu.[22]

At 8:50 a.m., after Fugetsu returned to Tier 2 and promptly fell asleep, "Kacho", Melody, and Kaiser gathered to continue discussing their plans. Since Fugetsu had successfully visited Room 1007, "Kacho" suggests beginning as soon as possible, when Fugetsu wakes up, so that they have time to try something else if getting rid of Luzurus did not address her condition. "Kacho" restates that they would have a perfect alibi if Kaiser did the questioning while Fugetsu was getting treated in the sick bay and guards were placed outside to vouch that they never left the room. She takes a back seat, watches as Melody thinks, and ensures their plan works.[22] Melody brings up the fact that the only Princes to reject their letters were Tserriednich and Marayam, though Halkenburg had also been unable to receive his letter due to him being under medical treatment. "Kacho" brings up the fact that she really wanted "Tserri" to read it, and asks if he had declined, but hears that he had told them to toss the letter. "Kacho" moves on and says that even if one of the Princes became interested in her tip-off, it would be a windfall and they might come to rely on Fugetsu for information. Kaiser says that their operation was overall a success and "Kacho" distractedly agrees, thinking about Fugetsu. Melody reassures her that thanks to Basho's help, the evil spirits stay away from her even when she was by herself, and suggests that they let Fugetsu sleep and get some rest since they need her to recover her strength. "Kacho" agrees and says that it would be the worst if Fugetsu could not use her ability at a critical moment. Kaiser suggests they get some rest too, and "Kacho" declares that they would begin their plans the night of the next day.[23]

"Kacho" spends the rest of the eleventh day seated with Fugetsu as she rests in the infirmary, watching over her.[24][note 2]

Equipment[]

Mosquitone Device: Kacho owns a communication device that produces high-pitched sounds, similar to the buzzing of a mosquito, that only people below a certain age can hear. It is activated with the press of one's thumb and is used to send coded messages, for example, through Morse code.[16]

Abilities & Powers[]

Despite being a Kakin royal family member, according to Tubeppa, Kacho has no real political influence or power.[25] She is a very capable actress who can convincingly keep up her spoiled persona for prolonged lengths of time with only the sound of her heartbeat giving her away,[1] and also while sending messages in code at the same time. She is capable of thinking ahead, which she demonstrated by acquiring a special communication device that adults cannot hear. She knows Morse code[16] and can play the glass harp.[8]

Morse Code Knowledge: Kacho secretly communicated with Melody using Morse code while maintaining a fake conversation.[16][8]

Guardian Spirit Beast[]

Like the rest of her siblings, Kacho received an egg from which a Guardian Spirit Beast, a variety of Nen beast, hatched to protect her.[3] As a parasitic-type ability, she has no control over it.[26] The Guardian Spirit Beast is subjected to two rule-like instincts: it is unable to fight other Guardian Spirit Beasts as well as to directly attack the host of one.[25]

Kacho's Guardian Spirit Beast
Type: Unknown (Symbiotic Type)[6]
Without-you
Kacho's Guardian Spirit Beast is formless. The activation of its ability, Without You (2人セゾン(キミガイナイ) Season of Two), is triggered by the death of one of the twins. The Guardian Spirit Beast takes the appearance and personality of the deceased Prince and stays by the other's side, protecting her until her death. The replica is visible to other people, including the other twin, and is indistinguishable from the original.[6]

Since the host of the Guardian Spirit Beast died, the Guardian Spirit Beast's ability technically makes use of post-mortem Nen. The ability of Fugetsu's Guardian Spirit Beast became more powerful after - and possibly as a result of - Kacho's death, and she no longer needs Kacho to open a door for the return journey. Additionally, Fugetsu is no longer limited to one use of her ability each day.[21]

Much is unknown about how Without You works as a Guardian Spirit Beast. Like other Guardian Spirit Beasts, it is able to phase through walls,[21] but unlike other Guardian Spirit Beasts, it is visible to others.[6][21] It can hang upside down on the ceiling.[22] Without You is able to interact with Fugetsu's Magical Worm, it is able to open Magical Worm's outgoing door, and the outgoing door only closes when Kacho steps through.[6] Without You itself believes that it uses Fugetsu's aura as its energy source, though this has not and may not be confirmed.[21]

Without You has an awareness of the succession war at large, and that it was "resurrected" in Kacho's form and consciousness to protect Fugetsu.[21] On the eleventh day of the voyage, it exhibited memory of a game Kacho played with Fugetsu when they were kids, indicating inheritance of Kacho's memories.[22] Its interactions in the Justice Bureau on days 9 and 10 (possibly 8 as well) were unshown, though it is aware that Melody is on its side, and briefly suspects Kaiser could be an enemy for a moment when it sees the outgoing door of Fugetsu's Magical Worm, but dismisses the thought when Fugetsu crawls out shortly after. After Kacho's death, Magical Worm no longer requires Kacho to open its return door.[21]

Quotes[]

  • (To Melody) "It's your job, so just do your best and get paid. Just wander around and pretend that you're worried about me, like you did now."[9]
  • (To Seiko) "This is a holy battle to decide the glorious king of Kakin. I will fight with dignity and pride. It's nothing to be scared or sad about."[8]
  • (To Fugetsu) "We'll always be together! We can make it with the two of us!"[6]

Trivia[]

  • "Kachōfūgetsu" (花鳥風月) is a Japanese saying that is literally translatable as "Flower, Bird, Wind, Moon" and adapted means "The Beauty of Nature" or "Beauties of Nature". It is an invitation to behold the wonders of nature and, in doing so, learn about oneself.
  • During an interview, Togashi mentioned that Without You was his favorite Nen ability. Togashi revealed that while he was drawing storyboards, he was so moved when he saw the choreographer of his favorite idol group talking about the intention behind the choreography of Season of Two and his interpretation of the song that he finished the storyboards at once. In that same interview, he mentioned that the ability he would like to use most was Magical Worm, to save him travel time and expenses, and to crawl to a hospital if his lower back happened to go out during the trip.[27]

Intertextuality and References[]

  • The second name of her Guardian Spirit Beast's ability, "Season of Two" (Futari Saison), is a reference to the third single by the Japanese girl idol group Keyakizaka46 and the main name, "Without You", comes from the fourth track (Kimi ga Inai) from the "Masshirona Mono wa Yogoshitaku Naru" music album of the same idol group.

Notes

  1. It is unclear why this is a second appeal
  2. Here, "Kacho"'s body is drawn translucently. It is currently unclear whether or not this is a stylistic choice or indicative of something like Fugetsu's Nen, which "Kacho" suspects powers her, weakening.
