The Kakin Empire (
History[]
In the age of rival warlords, Kakin was a small country that was threatened to be absorbed by its neighboring countries. Around that time, the First King of Kakin conjured the Seed Urn inspired by the "worm toxin" and had his children fight in a succession contest for the throne, which is the foundation for Kakin becoming the superpower that it is today.[2]
Ancient Kakin had a tradition where princes who failed to become kings were buried together with a sacrifice to prevent them from becoming vengeful ghosts who would curse or haunt the king. Despite supposedly being a great honor, this "afterlife companion" was always selected from the lowest caste in the system. This custom has since been abolished.[3]
Taking advantage of the "Shinrinkan Incident", the country shifted from being a socialist empire to a parliamentary democracy thirty years ago in what was called "The Most Silent Revolution in History". As a result, the name of the country was changed and all treaties considered null by the new government. In recent years, it underwent considerable economic growth. It is currently ruled by Nasubi Hui Guo Rou.[4]
Plot[]
Greed Island arc[]
Approximately 3 Phantom Troupe members were sent to Kakin when Razor scattered them across the Azian Continent in response to them trespassing on Greed Island.[5]
Chimera Ant arc[]
After using the Greed Island card "Accompany", Gon and Killua are transported out of Greed Island to this country where they meet Kite instead of who they believed to be Ging.[6] Kite is hired by the Government of Kakin and together with his team of six Amateur Hunters carries out a biological survey that consists mainly of ecological research—discovery of new species (the quota on their current contract is seven new species). Other Amateur Hunters are studying changes in native species habitat and population fluctuation. The team has been in Kakin for three years, and they still have one month till their contract with Kakin runs out. Since their quota is already fulfilled, Kite recruits Gon and Killua in the team and decides to find seven more species.[7]
During the three years they spent in Kakin, Lin Koshi has discovered the most new species (1019), and Kite has discovered the least (68 new species). The Camp Tiger is regarded as their biggest discovery during the whole trip.[7]
One month later, Kite and the Amateur Hunters turn in their results from the biological survey to the Kakin government. The zoologist Wong is delighted by their work and claims these results are worth 200 years of their own research. He then says they can't pay them a bonus but promises to recommend their team to the ministries of other countries. While there, they are also told that Southernpiece Auction House has acquired a segment of a strange creature. They are unable to put it up for auction in fear of its legality but are offering to sell it to a professional Hunter.[8]
Succession Contest arc[]
Kakin's King Nasubi Hui Guo Rou announces an expedition to the Dark Continent led by Beyond Netero.[4] The Five Modern Nations initially try to find ways to stop Kakin,[9] but after a summit instead decide to reorganize and invite Kakin into the group, becoming the V6. The former V5 are content with letting Kakin fake their voyage by ending at a fake "Dark Continent", having their general passengers disembark, and letting them tempt fate in the true Dark Continent. Kakin unveils the Black Whale, a gigantic ship capable of carrying 200,000 people, as the means of transportation to the Dark Continent, and Nasubi declares he will have 20 more built in the span of a year, as well as to send 100,000,000 people to the Dark Continent in 5 years.[10] However, the voyage also serves a secret function: it is on the Black Whale 1 that Nasubi plans to decide his successor by having Kakin's fourteen Princes participate in a deathmatch.[11]
The eve festival was held at a large harbor on the day before the Black Whale 1's departure, emceed by Gantai and Tamazo. The Royal Family and Beyond were introduced before being flown to the Black Whale 1, and they were joined by various VIPs on ferries shortly after, to settle in and to participate in a banquet on the Black Whale 1.[12] The Black Whale 1 set sail for the Dark Continent the next day, and its departure marked the beginning of Kakin's succession contest.[13]
Government[]
Royal Family[]
Kakin is a monarchical empire, ruled by King Nasubi Hui Guo Rou, who has eight wives and fourteen legitimate children.
- Queen Unma gave him two sons, Benjamin and Tserriednich.
- Queen Duazul gave him two daughters, Camilla and Tubeppa, and two sons, Luzurus and Halkenburg.
- Queen Tang Zhao Li, gave him one son, Zhang Lei.
- Queen Katrono gave him one daughter, Tyson.
- Queen Swinko-swinko gave him one son, Salé-salé.
- Queen Seiko gave him two daughters, Kacho and Fugetsu.
- Queen Sevanti gave him one daughter, Momoze, and one son, Marayam.
- Queen Oito gave him one daughter, Woble.
Even though officially there is no official ranking among the wives, there still exist some rules and privileges among them. For example, lower-ranking wives cannot contact the higher ranking ones.
Since gender has no bearing for succession, all the children are referred to as "Prince" — as in the "Nth Prince" in order of birth. All fourteen Princes are currently participating in a succession contest aboard the Black Whale during a voyage to the pretend New Continent where the sole survivor will be the official heir to the throne.[14]
Illegitimate children of a king take the name of "Second-Track Fakers"[15] (二線者, Nisenmono) and receive two scars on their face the moment they are born. They are allowed to live[16] and receive ample privileges in the underworld[15] on the condition that they forever remain in the shadows.[16]

Parliament[]
Kakin is a parliamentary democracy[4] and has an unknown ruling party.[17] The real power of these institutions is debatable, however, since King Nasubi seems to be the supreme leader of the country.
Military[]
Prince Benjamin is a Military Deputy Adviser. His personal militia are all soldiers in the Royal Army, making them qualify as Royal Guards to the other Princes.[18] Balsamilco Might, his Captain of the Guards, is a Master Sergeant.[19]
During Kakin's voyage to the pretend "New Continent", the Black Whale is under martial law. The Royal Army is acting as a neutral party to the Succession Battle and is assigned various tasks on board. The through-ways between the ship's tiers are guarded by the Royal Army. The military also manages all phone lines present in the ship, as well as monitoring the halls and keeping track of all activities.[12] The Royal Army was shown to handle the deceased bodies of bodyguards and princes alike by carrying them outside a prince's quarters.[13][20] They also restrain suspects and take them into custody to question them.[21][20]
Botobai and Mizaistom are assisting the military by taking command of private security.[12] Both negotiated to obtain the passenger list of the Black Whale No.1 by getting the V6 to contact Kakin on their behalf. Botobai believed they would be able to reach an agreement thanks to the strong channels Begerossé Union and United States of Saherta have with Kakin. Mizaistom was also responsible for performing background checks of candidates.[1] He is currently in the Royal Army conference room, while Botobai is located in the central courthouse of the Black Whale. Saccho plans to talk to Mizaistom and suggests a rotation so either him, Kanzai or Saiyu go support the Royal Army instead of "babysitting" Beyond.[12]
Princes' Employees[]
The Hunter Association restricted each Kakin prince to fifteen employees on board the Black Whale during their two-month voyage to the pretend New Continent.[11]
The fifteen employees can range from personal guards (e.g. Maor), Royal Guards/spies from the higher Queens (e.g. Slakka), Royal Guards from the princes' mothers (e.g. Mushaho),[19] servants (e.g. Shimano),[12] to Pro Hunters recruited from outside (e.g. Kurapika)[22]
Moreover, Princes Camilla, Zhang Lei, Tserriednich, and Tubeppa pushed this limit to 20 by sending 5 of their personal guards to take the 289th Hunter Exam and pass as Provisional Hunters with limited licenses only for the voyage (e.g. Theta).[11]
Below is a list that specifies the characteristics of these categories:
- Personal Guards: Soldiers each prince assembled through their own connections. Only the First Prince's guards also serve as royal army officers. The guards of the oldest five princes have been training since their childhood to give their lives to the prince. Morale and loyalty are high.[23]
- Queen's Guards: Royal army soldiers allotted to each queen. Each prince's guard has little sense of connection to them, but they are loyal to their queens.[23] Some of them are willing to assassinate the prince they are assigned to,[24] whereas others abhor the notion and limit themselves to monitoring their prince, making sure he or she does not become a threat to the safety of their client or her children.[25]
- Hunter Association Members: Professional Hunters hired as bodyguards by each individual prince. Exclusively defensive, they do not assist assassinations even by request from the client.[23]
- Provisional Hunters: Each prince's guards and the Hunter Association coordinated to gather personnel to guard areas outside residential quarters. This personnel was given temporary Hunter Association member status as a matter of convenience. Rules have been ignored and they freely enter quarters.[23]
- Servants: Some also serve as soldiers, and some are noncombatants. The more personnel a prince requests, the more furniture, necessities and luggage allowed to fit in their residence, and therefore the fewer weapons they can bring (those with weapons are supplied).[23]

This particular issue arose when their mother Queen Sevanti sent all of Momoze's Hunters and servants to Marayam. Since we only got to see 4/5 of Momoze's Hunters and 2/3 of her servants by that time, we can't say for certain which prince the marked characters initially belonged to. |
Benjamin's Employees[]
Prince Benjamin's employees all belong to his personal army, graduating from the Kakin Royal Military Academy. Additionally, all fifteen bodyguards, as well as Benjamin, are Nen users.[18] Since Benjamin doesn't have any servants, his living quarters' luggage limit is at minimum, increasing subsequently the number of weapons and provisions for weapon carriers.[23] Balsamilco Might is Benjamin's Captain of the Guards,[18] as well as a Master Sergeant in the royal army.[19]
Unlike the other high ranked princes, Benjamin refused to send his soldiers to take the 289th Hunter Exam and pass as Provisional Hunters to be an additional force during the voyage. Tserriednich claims that Benjamin is too prideful to have the Association judge his superior soldiers.[14]
The Royal Guards chosen by the queens must all be official soldiers of the Kakin royal army in order to qualify. Since Prince Benjamin is the Military Deputy Adviser of the royal army, his personal guards are the only ones who fulfill these requirements and hence are able to infiltrate the other princes' quarters by replacing Queen Unma's Royal Guards in alternating shifts, reporting all observations back to him.[18] Assaulting them even in the name of self-defense would most likely result in an arrest and being convicted as an assassin.[24] However, children of the First Queen are not obligated to comply with Benjamin's orders.[18]
Camilla's Employees[]
Camilla has her own personal army, consisting of seven personal guards, seven servants, and five Provisional Hunters with limited licenses for the voyage,[23] in addition to one spy sent by Queen Unma and later replaced by Musse from Prince Benjamin.[24]
She refused to send any of her guards to attend Kurapika's Nen training on the second day of the voyage, which was taken to mean either that there are Nen users in her personal guard, or that Camilla has sole authority over all matters.[27]
Zhang Lei's Employees[]
Zhang Lei has his own personal army, consisting of ten personal guards, three servants, and five Provisional Hunters with limited licenses for the voyage,[23] in addition to two spies sent by Queens Unma and Duazul; the former being replaced by Coventoba from Prince Benjamin. None of his personal guards are Nen users.[19]
In accordance with his alliance with Prince Woble, Zhang Lei sends two of his personal guards (Sakata and Hashito) to aid Kurapika in protecting the Fourteenth Prince until the first banquet, and to compensate the reduction of Prince Woble's staff after attacks from Silent Majority's user.[24] He later sends Tenftory to attend Kurapika's Nen training course.[27]
Since the First and Second Queens are cooperating to write up the surveillance reports of the younger princes, Queen Unma orders Slakka (Duazul's Royal Guard) to assist Sakata and Hashito and accompany them to Room 1014, leaving the Third Prince's matter to Coventoba.[24]
Tserriednich's Employees[]
Tserriednich has his own personal army, consisting of ten personal guards, five servants, and five Provisional Hunters with limited licenses for the voyage.[23] From his army, only Theta and Salkov are confirmed to be Nen users.[2]
On the second day of the voyage, Tserriednich sends Myuhan and Danjin to attend Kurapika's Nen training course. He orders the two to kill everyone there if they failed to learn Nen in the promised time-limit of two weeks.[27] Myuhan would be killed on the third day of the voyage, during Kurapika's second lecture on Nen. Danjin reports the matter to Tserriednich immediately and declares his intent to continue with the lessons. Tserriednich allows him to do so, but tells Danjin he expects proof that he remains sound of mind when the lectures are over.[28]
Tserriednich also has at least one platoon of soldiers, consisting of Private Second Class Otocin, Private Second Class Momolly, and at least three others. These soldiers were companions of Tserriednich when he was in the Kakin Royal Military Academy. They are friends with Private First Class Borksen, and led by Corporal Gipper. The group led by Corporal Gipper discovered the corpses of two of the Cha-R warehouse guards inside the abandoned Heil-Ly family hideout.[29]
Tubeppa's Employees[]
Tubeppa has her own personal army, consisting of nine personal guards, five servants, and five Provisional Hunters with limited licenses for the voyage,[23] in addition to one spy sent by Queen Unma and later replaced by Butch from Prince Benjamin. None of her personal guards are Nen users.[24]
On the second day of the voyage, Tubeppa sends Maor and Longhi to attend Kurapika's Nen training course, to further strengthen her alliance with Kurapika.[27] Maor's Nen would be successfully awakened by Kurapika during his 8th lecture, on day 9 of the voyage.[30] Longhi would be invited to have their Nen awakened the next day, but reveals that they can already use it, and instead proposes an agreement between Kurapika and Tubeppa. Kurapika would accept their proposal to work with Tubeppa.[31]
Tyson's Employees[]
Tyson has her own personal army, consisting of five personal guards, five servants, and two Pro Hunters,[23] in addition to three spies sent by Queens Unma through Tang Zhao Li, the first of whom was by Orau from Prince Benjamin. Other than the Pro Hunters, none of her personal guards are Nen users.[32]
She refused to send her soldiers to take the 289th Hunter Exam and pass as Provisional Hunters to be an additional force during the voyage. Tserriednich explains that Tyson won't allow her precious soldiers to go outside and have anyone else touch them.[14] Likewise, she didn't let them attend Kurapika's Nen training on the second day of the voyage.[27]
Luzurus' Employees[]
Probably due to their attrition with the Hunter Association,[14] Luzurus does not solely rely on his own personal army, seeing that the majority of his guards are from his mother Queen Duazul's side. His army consists of six Royal Guards from Queen Duazul, four personal guards, one servant, and three Pro Hunters,[23] in addition to one spy sent by Queen Unma, later replaced by one of Prince Benjamin's soldiers.[18] Among his guards is Satobi, Queen Duazul's Captain of the Guards.[27] Other than the three Pro Hunters, none of his personal guards are Nen users.[2] It is yet to be known if any of Duazul's guards can use it.
Luzurus sent his personal soldiers to take the 289th Hunter Exam so they could pass as Provisional Hunters and be an additional force for him during the voyage. However, all soldiers failed the exam. Tserriednich Hui Guo Rou believes Luzurus had suggested assassination to his men, without thinking there might be lie detectors.[14]
On the second day of the voyage, Luzurus sends Satobi to attend Kurapika's Nen training course.[27]
Salé-salé's Employees[]
Salé-salé does not solely rely on his own personal army, as some of his guards are from his mother Queen Swinko-swinko's side. His army consists of three Royal Guards from Queen Swinko-swinko, five personal guards, and three servants,[23] in addition to four spies sent by Queens Unma through Katrono;[25] the first was replaced by Rihan from Prince Benjamin.[23] None of his personal guards are confirmed to be Nen users, although Tuffdy, one of Swinko-swinko's Royal Guards, has shown the ability to use Nen.[32] In the prince's employ is also Mushaho, Queen Swinko-swinko's Captain of the Guards.
On the second day of the voyage, Salé-salé "got rid" of Mushaho by sending him to Kurapika's Nen training course.[27]
Halkenburg's Employees[]
Halkenburg has his own personal army, consisting of fourteen personal guards[23] and one spy sent by Queen Unma, later replaced by one of Prince Benjamin's soldiers.[33] None of his personal guards are Nen users, although all of them were half-awakened to Nen due to the influence of the Ninth Prince's Guardian Spirit Beast.[32]
On the second day of the voyage, Halkenburg sends Shedule and Yuhirai to attend Kurapika's Nen training course, to learn more of the Guardian Spirit Beasts' nature.[27]
Kacho's Employees[]
Kacho does not have a personal army and fully relies on the Pro Hunters and her mother's Royal Guards. Her staff consists of two Royal Guards from Queen Seiko, three Pro Hunters and five servants,[23] in addition to five spies sent by Queens Unma through Swinko-swinko;[25] the first was replaced by one of Prince Benjamin's soldiers.[18] Neither Royal Guard from Seiko's side is confirmed to be a Nen user.
On the second day of the voyage, Kacho sends Loberry and Yuri to attend Kurapika's Nen training course.[27] During the course, Loberry was arrested after being suspected of killing Barrigen.[32]
Fugetsu's Employees[]
Fugetsu does not have a personal army and fully relies on her mother's Royal Guards. Her staff consists of two Royal Guards from Queen Seiko and eight servants,[23] in addition to five spies sent by Queens Unma through Swinko-swinko;[25] the first was replaced by one of Prince Benjamin's soldiers.[18] Neither Royal Guard from Seiko's side is confirmed to be a Nen user.
The abundance of servants in her staff and the shortage of Pro Hunters or personal guards makes her the least equipped Prince in terms of weapons or provisions for weapon carriers as her living quarters' luggage limit is at a high level.[23]
On the second day of the voyage, Fugetsu sends Illardia and Ladiolus to attend Kurapika's Nen training course.[27]
Momoze's Employees[]
Momoze did not have a personal army and was reliant on her mother's Captain of the Guards, Vergei, as well as several Pro Hunters. Her staff consisted of one Royal Guard from Queen Seiko, five Pro Hunters (including Hanzo) and three servants,[23] in addition to six spies sent by Queens Unma through Seiko, the first of whom was replaced by Vict of Prince Benjamin.[24] Shortly after the departure, Queen Sevanti transferred her staff (bar the higher queens' guards) to her younger brother, Prince Marayam.[21]
After her death, the six Royal Guards suspected for her murder were arrested.[20] Later, Hanzo avenges Momoze by killing her murderer, Tuffdy, while staging a suicide and forging a confession note.[32]
Marayam's Employees[]
Marayam does not have a personal army and fully relies on the Pro Hunters and his mother's Royal Guards. His staff originally consisted of one Royal Guard from Queen Sevanti, five Pro Hunters and three servants,[23] in addition to six spies sent by Queens Unma through Seiko,[25] the first of whom was replaced by one of Prince Benjamin's soldiers.[18] After the departure ceremony, Queen Sevanti transferred the staff (bar the higher queens' guards) of his older sister, Prince Momoze, to his side.[21] Therefore, Marayam's staff currently consists of two Royal Guards from Queen Sevanti, ten Pro Hunters, six servants as well as the higher queens' guards.[23] Neither Royal Guard from Sevanti's side is a Nen user.[33]
On the second day of the voyage, Queen Sevanti sends Belerainte and Barrigen to attend Kurapika's Nen training course.[27] During its first minutes, Barrigen is killed by an attack from Silent Majority's user.[34]
Woble's Employees[]
Originally, Woble's staff consisted of four Pro Hunters, four servants and seven spies sent by Queens Unma through Sevanti.[25] After multiple attacks from the user of Silent Majority[13] and Benjamin's soldier Vincent, the number had dwindled to two Pro Hunters (Kurapika and Bill) and one servant (Shimano) by the end of the first day of the voyage.[18]
The five Royal Guards from Third Queen Tang Zhao Li through Seventh Queen Sevanti were killed by Silent Majority's user.[13] While manipulated by Momoze's Guardian Spirit Beast, Sayird killed Kurton and the remaining two Royal Guards of Unma and Duazul[25] and was arrested for this. After these events, two servants decided to quit.[21] Sandra, one of the maids who chose to stay, was killed by Vincent (the replacement of Queen Unma's guard).[18] After Vincent committed suicide, Room 1014 received four new bodyguards; Babimyna (Vincent's successor),[19] Slakka (Queen Duazul's second Royal Guard), and two personal guards (Sakata and Hashito) from their new ally Prince Zhang Lei to compensate for their shortage of staff.[24]
On the morning of the second day, Room 1014 embraced sixteen new guests (Furykov, Tenftory, Myuhan, Danjin, Maor, Longhi, Satobi, Mushaho, Shedule, Yuhirai, Loberry, Yuri, Illardia, Ladiolus, Belerainte, and Barrigen) for Kurapika's two-week Nen training course.[27] Barrigen is killed on the first day of training by Silent Majority's user.[34] Myuhan is killed the next day, also by Silent Majority's user.[28]
Queen's Guards[]
The Royal Guards sent by the higher queens are mostly used as informants (and sometimes assassins) to find out if the lower queens and princes are plotting a rebellion. A queen gets a true Royal Guard only when a lower-ranked queen comes along. Queen Oito, the lowest, had not even had this system explained to her before the departure of the Black Whale.[25]
To further elaborate on the numbers and divisions of the family guard:[23]
- Neither Prince Benjamin nor Prince Tserriednich have Royal Guards from higher queens since they are the children of the First Queen.[25]
- Additionally, both decided to solely depend on their personal army rather than recruit Royal Guards from their mother's side. However, Benjamin ended up replacing his personal soldiers with Unma's Royal Guards who were spying on the lower princes, in order to gain information of the Hunters' and Guardian Spirit Beasts' abilities of the princes.
- Princes Camilla, Tubeppa, Luzurus, and Halkenburg each have one guard chosen by Queen Unma (1st).[25]
- Prince Zhang Lei has two guards chosen by Queens Unma (1st) and Duazul (2nd).
- Prince Tyson has three guards chosen by Queens Unma (1st) through Tang Zhao Li (3rd).
- Prince Salé-salé has four guards chosen by Queens Unma (1st) through Katrono (4th), and three guards chosen by his mother Queen Swinko-swinko (5th).
- Both Prince Kacho and Prince Fugetsu have five guards chosen by Queens Unma (1st) through Swinko-swinko (5th), and two guards chosen by her mother Queen Seiko (6th).
- Both Prince Momoze and Prince Marayam have six guards chosen by Queens Unma (1st) through Seiko (6th), and one guard chosen by her mother Queen Sevanti (7th).[25]
- Queen Sevanti transferred her second Royal Guard from Momoze to Marayam.[21]
- Prince Woble has seven guards chosen by Queens Unma (1st) through Sevanti (7th) and none chosen by her mother Queen Oito (8th).[25]
However, it should be noted that the queens are not allowed to order their Royal Guards to assassinate the princes, seeing that even a queen would be imprisoned if she issued such an order. The Royal Guards' job is to still protect the lower princes as long as it does not threaten the safety of their clients and their prince. In fact, even though King Nasubi himself allowed the succession battle, he has promised no acquittal or pardon for murdering a prince.[25]

Unma's Royal Guards[]
Unma has 12 Royal Guards who were originally assigned to the lower queens' children before being replaced by Benjamin's soldiers, and they work in alternating shifts.[2] Both of her children (Benjamin and Tserriednich) preferred to recruit their own personal guards for the voyage.[22] It is unclear whether the fourteen Royal Guards that could have been assigned to each of them are on board the Black Whale with the royal army troops or not, or exist in the first place.
Unma's guards are cooperating with Queens Duazul's to write up the surveillance reports of the younger princes. Therefore, one or both of them always stay by the princes. On the first day of the voyage, when the Royal Guards sent by the two queens to Woble is killed by an attack from Silent Majority's user, a danger appeared that the Pro Hunters of the younger princes would soon be exchanging confidential information to other princes. For that reason, Unma orders Duazul's guard in Zhang Lei's quarters to accompany the Third Prince's personal guards to Room 1014.[24]
On the second day of the voyage, Prince Camilla shoots and kill one of Unma's Royal Guards who was appointed to Prince Benjamin at the time.[35]
None of her Royal Guards are confirmed to be Nen users.
Duazul's Royal Guards[]
Duazul has 15 Royal Guards: one coordinator who is also her Captain of the Royal Guards (Mandam),[24] eight spies for the lower queens' children,[25] and six guards for her son, Prince Luzurus,[23] including a second Captain of the Royal Guards, Satobi.[27] Her other children (Camilla, Tubeppa, and Halkenburg) preferred to recruit their own personal guards for the voyage.[22] It is unclear whether the eighteen Royal Guards that could've been assigned to those three are on board the Black Whale with the royal army troops or not, or exist in the first place.

After Prince Momoze is murdered, Nipaper is taken into custody by the Kakin army to be interrogated.[20]
None of her Royal Guards are confirmed to be Nen users.
Tang Zhao Li's Royal Guards[]
Tang Zhao Li is keeping only the seven Royal Guards chosen to spy on the lower queens' children, Princes Tyson through Woble (except Luzurus and Halkenburg)[25] as her son Prince Zhang Lei preferred to recruit his own personal guards for the voyage.[22] It is unclear whether the five Royal Guards that could've been assigned to Zhang Lei are on board the Black Whale with the royal army troops or not, or if they exist in the first place. The Royal Guard sent to Woble was killed on the first day of the voyage by an attack from Silent Majority's user.[25]
After Prince Momoze is murdered, Bladge is taken into custody by the Kakin army to be interrogated.[20]
None of her Royal Guards are confirmed to be Nen users.
Katrono's Royal Guards[]
Katrono is keeping only the six Royal Guards chosen to spy on the lower queens' children, Princes Salé-salé through Woble (except Halkenburg)[25] as her daughter Prince Tyson preferred to recruit her own personal guards for the voyage.[14] It's unclear whether the four Royal Guards that could've been assigned to Tyson are on board the Black Whale with the royal army troops or not. The Royal Guard sent to Woble was killed on the first day of the voyage by an attack from Silent Majority's user.[25]
After Prince Momoze is murdered, Laroc is taken into custody by the Kakin army to be interrogated.[20]
None of her Royal Guards are confirmed to be Nen users.
Swinko-swinko's Royal Guards[]
Swinko-swinko is given eight guards from the royal army troops; three for her child, Prince Salé-salé and five spies for the children of the lower-ranked queens, Princes Kacho through Woble.[25] Mushaho is her Captain of the Royal Guards and is assigned to Prince Salé-salé.[27] The Royal Guard sent to Woble was killed on the first day of the voyage by an attack from Silent Majority's user.[25]
After murdering Prince Momoze, Tuffdy is taken into custody by the Kakin army to be interrogated.[20] Shortly after, he was assassinated by Hanzo in his cell.
From her guards, Tuffdy is the only one confirmed to be a Nen user.[32]
Seiko's Royal Guards[]
Seiko is given seven guards from the royal army troops; two for each of her children (Prince Kacho and Prince Fugetsu) and three spies for the children of the lower-ranked queens, Princes Momoze through Woble. The Royal Guard sent to Woble was killed on the first day of the voyage by an attack from Silent Majority's user.[25]
After Prince Momoze is murdered, Nagmum is taken into custody by the Kakin army to be interrogated.[20]
None of her Royal Guards are confirmed to be Nen users.
Sevanti's Royal Guards[]
Sevanti is given three guards from the royal army troops; two for her own children (Prince Momoze and Prince Marayam) and one spy for the child of the lower-ranked Queen Oito, Prince Woble.[25] Vergei is her Captain of the Royal Guards,[35] and was originally assigned to Prince Momoze before she transferred him to Marayam.[21] The Royal Guard sent to Woble was killed on the first day of the voyage by an attack from Silent Majority's user.[25]
On the second day of the voyage, Sevanti sends Barrigen to Kurapika's Nen training course,[27] who then suffers the same fate of Woble's Royal Guard as Silent Majority's four snakes suck the blood out of his body, killing him in the process.[34]
None of her Royal Guards are Nen users.
Society[]
The Kakin Empire has a caste society, at the lowest tier of which is the Have-Nots.[3]

Underworld[]
The underworld of the Kakin Empire is ruled by three great Mafia families: Xi-Yu, Heil-Ly, and Cha-R. Each of the families is led by the illegitimate child of a Kakin king, and has the support of a rightful heir to the throne.[16] Members of all three families boarded the Black Whale in order to secure territories and resources in the Dark Continent.[36]

Xi-Yu Family[]
The Xi-Yu Family is led by Onior Longbao, illegitimate half-brother to King Nasubi. It enjoys the patronage of Prince Zhang Lei. It controls Tier 4 of the Black Whale and makes its money off human trafficking and the distribution of goods.[16] Currently, the Xi-Yu has the most financial power and manpower among the three great families.[36]
Heil-Ly Family[]
The Heil-Ly Family is led by Morena Prudo, the illegitimate daughter of King Nasubi. It is supported by Prince Tserriednich. It controls Tier 3 of the Black Whale and derives its income from mediating between the upper tiers and the black market.[16]
Cha-R Family[]
The Cha-R Family is led by Brocco Li, illegitimate half-brother to King Nasubi. It is supported by Prince Luzurus. It controls Tier 5 of the Black Whale and all commodities stored there.[16]
Code of Conduct[]
Prior to Morena's rise to power, the three Mafia families obeyed a set of rules to reduce conflicts. Independent attacks initiated by members of a family against another and the use of guns must first be discussed with the family's boss, who then contacts the leader of the targeted family. The attack is passed off as the unapproved initiative of rogue underlings, and the boss of the damaged family is entitled to request compensation in a guise and amount they see fit and conducive to restoring and maintaining balance. The formal apology of one boss to another generally occurs within 24 hours after the fact, but it is even more crucial that the boss was away from home turf at the time of the attack. Failure to respect the latter rule is sure to result in an all-out war that will end only with the complete extermination of one of the two families.[15]
In case of an all-out war, they are only allowed to use their own men and not to hire thugs outside the family as well as from other minor Mafia families.[15]
On the Black Whale[]
The three Mafia families control Tiers 3-5 of the boat.[16] The bosses are entitled to reside in Tier 1, with apartments as luxurious as the upper-ranked queens and luggage capacity second only to the king's, for as long as they obey royal authority.[15] Onior and Brocco dwell in Tier 1,[36][15] while Morena's resides in the Heil-Ly secret base on Tier 2 with her underlings.[29][31]
Trivia[]
- In Chapter 361, the cap of a Kakin Army's soldier seemingly has the word "Kakin", in a stylized way, on it, confirming the in-universe name of the nation.
- Contradictorily, in Chapter 371, the stylized inscription on Cleapatro's room and the parts shown the word on their clothing indicate the word "Cakin"—also a possible in-story spelling of the country's name.
- The term used to refer to illegitimate children of a Kakin king is "Nisenmono" (二線者), a neologism derived from the Japanese "nisenkyu" (二線級, "secondary/inferior") and "nisemono" (偽物, "fake").[16] Possible English counterparts would be "Second Raker" or "Fakondary Princes".
- In chap 394, it is revealed that it is extremely rude and disrespectful for a commoner to abbreviate the name of the Royal Family members.
Intertextuality and References[]
- The three Mafia families seem to be based off triads, while also forming one in the literal sense of "group of three".
