Ken'i Wang (オウ=ケンイ, Ou Ken'i) is the Underboss of the Cha-R Family.[1]

Appearance[]

Ken'i is a tall, lean man with neatly combed, dark hair and a sharp jawline. He has thin, dark eyes and wears rectangular-framed glasses. In his first appearance, he wore a striped single-breasted suit over a white shirt and dark-colored tie with polka dots.[1]

When Ken'i confronts the Phantom Troupe he's dressed in a dark-colored suit colored and matching color tie.[2]

Personality[]

Ken'i is a calm individual who takes his responsibilities seriously. He is able to immediately give out precise orders to his underlings, upon receiving orders from their family boss.[1] However, he admits that he could be a bit impatient and that he hates slow work. Slow works prompt him to take action despite being asked to wait. Despite his impatience, he is easy to calm down again once the situation has been verified and even apologizes to those he accused wrongly. Still, he can identify threats that he deems he should eliminate as soon as possible.[2]

Plot[]

Succession Contest arc[]

After confronting the Phantom Troupe in the dining hall on Tier 5 of the Black Whale and learning of their hunt for a man named Hisoka as well as their likely intent to get to Tier 1, a bearded member of the Cha-R Family tells his associate Sun-bin to send word to Ken'i that there might be a conflict with the Troupe.[3]

In fear of breaking the balance inside the Black Whale, Brocco Li orders Ken'i to locate Hisoka before the Spiders. Following this, Ken'i immediately instructs his subordinate to gather the squad leaders from each sector in the Cha-R Family, promising to give 10 million for the person to find Hisoka as well as their squad leader. When asked if they will be able to capture the Heavens Arena Floor Master, Ken'i mocks his subordinate and then assures him that their mission ends upon finding Hisoka, and from there, he'll take matters into his own hands.[1]

Chap 379 - Ken'i confronting three Phantom Troupe members

Wang's group confront the Spiders

After receiving word about an attack on the Cha-R warehouse guards,[note 1] Ken'i heads to the Cha-R hideout accompanied by four armed subordinates, where he sees Phantom Troupe members Nobunaga, Phinks, and Feitan outside their hideout. Ken'i confronts them about the attack on their warehouse guards. The Spiders deny any responsibility, but Ken'i remains unconvinced until he receives a call[note 2] with a more detailed report. He shares that a man carrying a bloodied warehouse guard came by yelling "the Spiders did it" and was let into their hideout by their underlings. Ken'i concludes the man was probably an assassin from an enemy family that wanted a fight to break out between the Cha-R Family and the Spiders. Phinks suggests that the man's true goal was to enter their hideout in order to be able to teleport back there using Nen at a later time. As he listens to him, Ken'i is deeply troubled by the nonchalance with which Phinks is willing to share dangerous information and concludes the Phantom Troupe must be crushed. However, he offers them to become their allies.[2]

Chap 380 - Ken'i Wang and Nobunaga

Ken'i and Nobunaga come across the door

Ken'i leads the three Spiders into their family's base and shows them the monitor room, where they review what happened between the culprit and the warehouse keepers. One of his underlings explains that the culprit was careful so that his face was not be caught on camera and that the Spiders are the only outsiders who entered and exited the warehouse that same day. Ken'i asks him to review earlier video footage in case the culprit had done earlier surveyance of the area. He tells Nobunaga that the cameras were installed on the day before the departure, and it was possible for the culprit to disguise himself as a laborer. They come across a locked door and Ken'i provokes Nobunaga by asking if he wants to see what is inside. Nobunaga declines for now, though he proposes to be shown its contents in exchange for the head of the culprit. Ken'i agrees and calls for Tsudonke and his underlings. He introduces the Spiders as new members of the surveillance and orders Tsudonke to show them around.[4]

Chap 384 - Spiders and Cha-R

Tajao discusses Morena with the Spiders

Over the next few days, 8 members of the family go missing while Morena herself cannot be found. That Saturday, Ken'i uses the secret passage to the upper tiers to take Tajao to the hideout. He fears that the Royal Army might believe the other Mafia families to be responsible for her disappearance and search their quarters. Upon arriving at the hideout, he introduces the Spiders to Tajao, but Phinks objects to the way he does so, stating that they are not the ones who sought a collaboration. Ken'i managed to update the vice boss and suggested taking action quickly. He then asks him to call the Boss and confirm whether Morena is in Tier 1. When the Spiders volunteer to kill both the assassin and Morena, Ken'i, and Tajao assess the risks.[5]

Elsewhere on the ship, a Cha-R member tells Ken'i that someone clashed with the Xi-Yu in Area E's plaza, adding that Hinrigh was apparently involved. After saying that they will head there now, Ken'i addresses Tsudonke and his men, telling them to look for more information up to Area C if necessary and to report their findings to the Troupe back at the office. Once the four members leave, Ken'i worries about the Troupe staying back at the office, having hoped that they would split up once they started their search of Tier 4. He adds that they are smart enough to wait for the Heil-Ly hitman to arrive since he has already fulfilled the marking condition of his ability. He also praises their assessment of the three Mafia families and their realization that the key to finding Hisoka was using hitmen. He then wonders if it's better to leave the Troupe to the Heil-Ly and to focus on finding Hisoka.[6]

Chap 392 - Ken'i giving orders

Ken'i giving orders to several Cha-R members

Ken'i then remembers Ittoku's words about the Troupe planning to loot Tier 1 after they kill Hisoka, unsure of all the variables involved and advising him to eliminate them one at a time. After telling himself that Hisoka should be their first priority, he addresses several Cha-R members and says that the Xi-Yu will have an advantage if the civilian they encountered was Hisoka. He stresses that finding Hisoka is their top priority and that they will use him to crush both the Heil-Ly and the Troupe in order to maintain balance. He reminds them that they know nothing of the Heil-Ly besides their boss and orders them not to approach Hisoka until he arrives, adding that he was a Floor Master at Heavens Arena. He says that if he or Hinrigh successfully negotiates with him, they can simply sit back while the Troupe and Heil-Ly fight each other. Ken'i then says to himself that if Hisoka is capable of destroying the Troupe, it would be much easier to let them fight each other. However, he worries about Hisoka's unpredictable nature and mentions that based on the footage of his fights at Heavens Arena, he seems to prefer stacking the deck against himself.[6]

Later, back at the Cha-R's office, Tsudonke continues to hold in his excitement about the Troupe and tells himself that he has to get enough autograph paper for each member, hoping that Ken'i will help him access the general store. On Tier 3, as Maizan waits for Hinrigh and wonders what's taking him so long, he spots Ken'i and several Cha-R members approaching him. Ken'i notices several drops of blood on the floor and comments on the recent conflict. Maizan explains that Hinrigh clashed with a civilian and that they could have handed Hinrigh over to the police if the civilian had cooperated, but Ken'i highlights their connection and bribery. Maizan tells him to stop his accusations and leave, but Ken'i wonders why a corporal would be standing guard instead of a regular soldier and asks what he's planning with Hinrigh. Maizan reveals that Hinrigh wanted information on the Heil-Ly's hideout and tells Ken'i that he can also make an offer for the intel. Ken'i quickly agrees to match Hinrigh's offer and tells a subordinate to bring him 50 million in cash.[7]

Chap 393 - Ken'i and Maizan

Ken'i assuring the corporal that there will be no survivors

Maizan is unsure whether Hinrigh will agree to it, but Ken'i assures him that they are working together to crush the Heil-Ly since a second-track faker has gone too far and they have received approval from the Fourth Prince. He tells Maizan to report every potential Heil-Ly member they spot and that they will give five million to the finder and his corporal, adding that they will set up a culprit for the murders, and he will provide the eyewitness testimony. Maizan agrees to the deal as long as they eliminate every Heil-Ly member since he doesn't want to worry about retaliation. Ken'i puts on a haunting smile and assures him that they will deal with every last one of them. Maizan recognizes his icy grin and nervously wonders if everyone he smiles at dies, but Ken'i calls it a rude rumor and points out that everyone dies eventually.[7]

Connelly, a Xi-Yu lieutenant, approaches with a paper bag full of money and says that they can get started once their money and Hinrigh arrive. Maizan leads the Mafia members to Room 3101 in the first-class cabins, and Hinrigh asks if every room has the same layout. Maizan explains that the worker told him it was the only room without a bathroom wall, adding that the plumbing space is behind it, but the access panel is elsewhere. He then says that if there's a wall there now, it should confirm that there’s a hidden room. Ken'i points out that anything could be back there since it's at the edge of the ship. Hinrigh tells Maizan to make contact since they shouldn't attack a soldier, but still advises him to leave his safety off. Maizan knocks on the door and announces that the Kakin Army has received a tip and needs to search the room.[7]

Chap 393 - Hinrigh and Ken'i

Hinrigh and Ken'i seeing that the corporal disappeared

Gateaume slowly opens the door and assures them that he hasn't done anything wrong. Readying his weapon, Maizan tells the man to back away slowly and sit down on the bed with his hands raised. However, when Maizan enters the room, Hinrigh and Ken'i look inside to see that he has disappeared. Still sitting on the bed, Gateaume is surprised the corporal wasn't alone and says that they don't look to be military, assuring them that he hasn't done anything wrong and politely asking them to come inside. The two underbosses remain outside the room, and Hinrigh asks where Corporal Maizan is. Gateaume replies that he may have gone to the bathroom and again asks them to come inside. However, Hinrigh suddenly throws a knife past Gateaume's head and notices that it didn't disappear. He tells Gateaume to come to them and that the next knife won't miss, with Gateaume quickly complying and again saying that he hasn't done anything wrong.[7]

Chap 394 - Gateaume vanishing

Gateaume vanishing from Room 3101

Although Gateaume says that he needs to use the bathroom, Hinrigh threatens him first before suddenly throwing a knife into his right thigh. Gateaume screams out in pain and falls to the floor, wondering what's wrong with them and repeating that he's a defenseless old man. Hinrigh points out that there's no blood and asks where his real body is, threatening to attack it. Gateaume reveals that he used to be an insurance scammer and that the more honest people would believe his injuries, lamenting how the times have changed. Hinrigh asks where his body and the corporal are, but Gateaume chuckles in reply as he disappears, and the knife falls to the floor.[8]

Ken'i reminds Hinrigh that he has already found Hisoka and suggests that they send the Troupe to eliminate the Heil-Ly at their hideout. A Xi-Yu member named Tassi begins walking toward the room to pick up Hinrigh's knife, but before the others can warn him, he enters and vanishes right in front of them. Hinrigh says that it's probably the same person who was abducting their members, but Ken'i points out that the hitman was killed by Nobunaga. With Hinrigh left surprised, Ken'i adds that even though the Troupe members left their office, the hitman's head and torso remain there, revealing the Troupe's declaration to eliminate the Heil-Ly. As Ken'i adds that they can also handle the trap in front of them, Hinrigh tells himself that he will follow up on his own leads.[8]

Chap 395 - Ken'i

Ken'i using a map of the ship to analyze the situation

Continuing to review the camcorder footage, Hinrigh confirms that the Heil-Ly are using teleportation as he sees two members using the only hallway to enter the standard cabins and somehow entering again hours later from a different direction. Although he considers the possibility of secret passageways, he is confident that they are using a Nen ability to access their hideout. He then makes his way back to Ken'i, who uses a map of the Black Whale and asks for confirmation that the military is aware of the Heil-Ly's official office on Tier 3 and that the room is sealed where Tserriednich's personal soldiers found the body of a warehouse guard.[9]

With all six soldiers present, two confirm the information and add that the Heil-Ly weren't at the office. Ken'i tells them that they have possibly found the secret hideout behind Room 3101 and that Nobunaga plans to investigate it with two other Troupe members. He adds that he and Hinrigh will track the pair seen on the camcorder footage and try to bring them back alive so that they can avoid police involvement. Borksen explains that they are unable to help since the Heil-Ly know their faces, but another soldier adds that they can turn themselves in if they end up killing the two Heil-Ly members. Hinrigh asks if he told the Troupe about the trap, and Ken'i explains that when he asked how they planned to handle it, they replied that it doesn't matter.[9]

As the three Troupe members continue to test the teleportation ability in Room 3101, Ken'i suddenly appears in the hallway and introduces Hinrigh as the Xi-Yu's underboss, revealing that he has a proposal for them. Hinrigh offers to help them locate the enemy's hideout and tells them to postpone their suicide mission until after listening to him. Ken'i explains that the Cha-R are following two suspected Heil-Ly members, revealing that they can trust Hinrigh since he found them and Room 3101.[10]

Abilities & Powers[]

As the Underboss of the Cha-R Family, Ken'i's authority is second only to that of the Boss himself. He can enter and exit Tiers 1 and 5 at will, despite not being ordinarily permitted. He has enough confidence in his abilities to claim he will handle Hisoka, a former member of the Phantom Troupe and Floor Master, once he has been found.[1] He appears to know about the existence of Nen, although it is currently unknown if he can use it himself.[2]
