"And the first step is for you to all draw lots. Who to hunt... and who will hunt you." — Lippo to the examinees, in "Two Enemies" |
Lippo (リッポー, Rippō) is a Blacklist Hunter who acted as the examiner for the Third and Fourth Phases of the 287th Hunter Exam.[1][2]
Appearance
Lippo is a petite man with a distinguishable violet mohawk, red eyes, and large eyeglasses (tainted orange in the 1999 series).
Personality
Lippo likes to watch fights and has a sweet tooth.[1] He is proud of his accomplishments as a Blacklist Hunter, and although he has no sympathy for criminals, he views them as his champions in the Third Phase of the Hunter Exam, relishing in their victories against the examinees, even the most brutal ones. He seems to have been close to the late Chairman Netero, as he's shown tearing up during the first round of the 13th Hunter Chairman Election.[3]
Background
Lippo is a Blacklist Hunter with a repertoire that includes the capture of Johness the Dissector, the most notorious mass murderer in Zaban City's history. To coerce prisoners to fight examinees inside Trick Tower, he offers to shorten their sentence by one year for every hour they stall the examinees.[1]
Plot
Hunter Exam arc
On top of Trick Tower, Beans explains to the examinees that they have 72 hours to reach the bottom of the tower alive. Inside the tower, a smiling Lippo tells Togari and another examiner that it's showtime.[4] As the examinees begin to enter the tower, the three examiners are shown sitting on the floor and eating various snacks. Lippo whistles and several hooded figures appear with restraints around their wrists. He then tells them to move and take their positions, with the prisoners obeying his orders. After Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio enter the tower and wait for one more applicant so they can start the path of majority rules, Lippo talks over the nearby intercom and tells the examinees that each route down the tower has different requirements. He stresses that a single person cannot complete their path and that they will have to work together to reach the bottom of the tower alive, wishing them good luck.[5]
After Gon and his team enter the arena inside the tower, the shrouded Bendot turns to the nearby surveillance camera and points out that the examinees have arrived asking that his handcuffs be unlocked. Lippo quickly unlocks them, and the restraints around Bendot's wrists fall to the floor. Bendot then removes the shroud from his head and tells the examinees that the committee has chosen them as their taskmasters.[6]
On the other side of the arena inside the tower, the prisoners chuckle at the examinees quarreling and hope they continue to waste time, revealing that it will shorten their prison terms. Lippo eats a snack and sits in front of several monitors, eagerly watching all the examinees throughout the tower. It's revealed that each of the five prisoners is serving consecutive sentences of over 100 years. He has promised to shorten their sentences by one year for every hour that they can delay an examinee. After Bendot's win against Tonpa, Sedokan offers to go next and looks up at the surveillance camera, politely asking Lippo to unlock his restraints. After Gon defeats Sedokan in his game of candles, Lippo smiles and praises Gon's ability.[1]
After defeating Leorio, Leroute asks how much time the examinees had left, and Lippo's reply is 59 hours and 45 minutes. Bendot says that the examinees now have less than ten hours, with the last prisoner adding that time won't matter since his opponent will die. After the examinees defeat the prisoners, they wait in a nearby room, with Lippo telling them that the door will open in 50 hours so they can continue to descend the tower.[7]
Outside Trick Tower, Lippo congratulates the 24 examinees who completed the phase and reveals that the exam only has two more phases to complete. He explains that the Fourth Phase will take place on Zevil Island, with the location seen behind him. He then snaps his fingers, and the other examiner appears with a box on a cart. Lippo explains that they will draw lots to decide who they will hunt and who will hunt them.[2] He adds that the box contains 24 numbered cards that correspond to the remaining examinees, telling them to draw in the order in which they reached the bottom of the tower. After they each draw a card, Lippo assures them that the tabulator has recorded the badge numbers and can dispose of the card if they wish. He then reveals that the examinee whose badge number is on their card is their target and that their objective is to collect the badges of other examinees. He explains that the badge of their specified target is worth three points and that their badge is worth three points if they can keep it. He adds that all other badges are worth one point and that they need at least six points to reach the final phase of the exam. Lippo finishes his explanation and tells the examinees to enjoy their time on Zevil Island.[8]
Lippo is seen among the other examiners as they discuss the remaining examinees and the final phase of the exam. When Netero reveals the matchups, Lippo appears just as surprised as the other examiners.[9]
13th Hunter Chairman Election arc
After Netero's death, Lippo participates in the first round of the 13th Hunter Chairman Election. He also appears visibly distraught and begins to tear up.[3]
