The Captain is actually hired by the Hunter Association to shortlist applicants for the exam. He shortlists Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio and asks for their reasons for wanting to become Hunters. Kurapika and Leorio have a dispute among themselves because Kurapika rudely addresses Leorio and Leorio insults Kurapika's clan. They then step out on the deck to fight, but are interrupted when Katzo, a crew member, is about to fall out of the ship. Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio help to save Katzo. She poses a similar riddle which angers Leorio who proceeds to attack the old woman. It dawns to Kurapika that it is a trick question and manages to stop Leorio from spoiling the correct response, which led to them being sent to the correct path. Upon reaching the cedar tree, they find the navigators being attacked by a shape-shifting creature, the Kiriko. They did not fall for his trick, though, for they are able to detect the laxatives in the drinks. Other applicants are introduced; the most notable are Hisoka, who nearly killed an examiner from last year's examination, and Killua, who shows to be tolerant of Tonpa's drink. Satotz, the first examiner introduces himself and tells the participants to follow him through the tunnel as part of the first exam phase.

After passing through the tunnel, they arrive at the Milsy Wetlands, also known as Swindlers' Swamp which is teeming with cunning creatures. A man shows up, claims to be the examiner, and accuses Satotz of being a masquerading man-faced ape. Hisoka attacks the two "examiners", killing the fake. Killua then quits and leaves in a bad mood. He bumps into two of the applicants along the corridor and the two confront him about his action, only to be attacked by Killua. Box Sets

  • For the Hunter Exam, three episodes were put on to single DVD/BD volumes making a total of seven volumes. Starting with the Zoldyck Family arc, each major arc was divided into its own set, meaning retail "volumes" were canceled. For example, the Heavens Arena arc was put into a single box set, covering episodes 27-38. However, single-volume DVDs were continued at rental stores.
  • Recapitulation episodes are not included in the DVDs/BDs or the Retail volumes.
  • Each of the Retail volumes contains three episodes.
  • Various minute edits have been made in the animation between the original TV airing and the DVD/BD versions of the episodes.
  • There have been two-episode postponements: One for unknown reasons, and one for the Christmas Holiday break. This break (December 29 to January 6) also applied to all anime series.
