"I can feel it. I've just been bestowed with a gift! This power will take me where I want to go!" — Luini in "Collaboration" |
Luini (ルイニー, Ruinī) was a member of the Heil-Ly Family.[1]
Appearance[]
Luini was described as a man of slim build in his twenties, between 185 and 190 cm tall, and with a large crescent-shaped scar on his left cheek. He has prominent teeth, a high brow, and fair, combed-back hair.[1] During his killing spree on the Black Whale, Luini disguised himself as a Kakin soldier. Afterwards, he switched into a tracksuit similar to what Phinks usually wears.[2]
Personality[]
Like his fellow Heil-Ly members, Luini had sadistic tendencies and no qualms about killing many people. He murdered 20 passengers in a short span of time and later killed a Mafia member as a "prank" for three members of the Phantom Troupe, whom he respected and described as his idols. Like his leader, Morena Prudo, he wanted to destroy the world.[1] Luini also had a loathing towards the upper class, hoping that he could work with the Troupe to wipe them out.[3]
Plot[]
Succession Contest arc[]
Luini is seen with the other Heil-Ly members as Morena uses her Contagion on them one at a time and explains how her Nen ability works.[1]
In a warehouse on Tier 5, Nobunaga, Phinks, and Feitan follow a Cha-R member as they prepare to retrieve their weapons. However, as the member turns the corner, Nobunaga stops the other two and says that the man just disappeared from his En, with Phinks confirming it. After they turn the corner, they see no one at the dead end. They hear a sound behind them and quickly turn around, walking back around the corner and finding the man dead on the floor with his throat slit and several wounds in his chest. The three are left confused, but Phinks and Feitan prioritize their mission, with Nobunaga in disbelief that he is the only one worrying about how the man died. At the same time, Luini begins to open a portal in the ceiling above them.[1]
In the general passenger area on Tier 3, several soldiers cordon off the area as a large crowd begins to gather. An official tells them to stay back and that the area will be off-limits until forensics is done with the scene. Mizaistom asks someone how many victims there are, and the person says twenty, adding that the perpetrator entered the room disguised as Royal Army and killed quickly. Mizaistom wonders if Nen was involved, but the person replies that they only know a blade was used, with no sign of a Nen ability. Mizaistom describes it as a random attack and asks if there are any witnesses. The person says that there is a witness who described the perpetrator as in his twenties, slender, 6' to 6'2", with a crescent scar on his left cheek. They add that canvassing the area didn't return any eyewitness accounts of someone who fits that description, guessing that their testimony may be flawed because of confusion from shock. Mizaistom then sternly asks to speak to the witness.[1]
Back in the warehouse, Luini slowly opens the portal and excitedly looks at the three Troupe members. He chuckles and says it's only fitting that the Commando Team for the Spiders ignored his prank. Continuing to watch them from inside the portal, he says that they are his idols and hopes that they can work together to destroy the world.[1]
Mizaistom eventually goes to the scene of the crime, and Cashew begins to recount what happened. She first says that she heard a knock, and the victim went to the door. Once she opened it, Cashew then heard someone collapse, calling out but getting no answer. As Cashew opened the bathroom, she saw Luini dressed as a soldier and standing there before he quickly ordered her to move and threatened to kill her if she made a noise. After seeing the victim's body on the floor, Cashew emphasizes how afraid she was and says that she made sure to focus on following his orders so that he would spare her life. As she was desperately hoping that he wouldn't kill her, Luini says that he planned to stop at 20 and that it was the whole point of going for single rooms. He then begins to count and realizes that levels and number of people are offset by one, adding that it bothers him and angrily wondering which number he should count by. Cashew suddenly heard a scream outside the room and the sounds of people running, pounding on doors, and more screams.[2]
She tells Mizaistom that the man locked the bathroom door from the inside, and Mizaistom is left confused. She explains that she sat there until the Royal Army pried the door open, revealing that he had somehow escaped. Mizaistom points out that the pipes aren't even big enough for a rat, and Cashew is certain that he didn't come out, adding that the soldiers confirmed the door was locked. She then pleads with Mizaistom to catch the man and ask him. Mizaistom begins to analyze the situation with himself, wondering why he would have left a witness alive and emphasizing that the various words the man used are clues to the mystery. Mizaistom asks how she knew the victim, and Cashew replies that they hit it off right away after they happened to sit next to each other to eat. She then begins to cry, saying that the woman wanted advice about her personal life and she didn't get to give it to her. Mizaistom kneels down beside her and tells her to go rest in her cabin, adding that they will talk to her again.[2]
After Mizaistom escorts her away from the scene, Cashew's expression instantly changes, and it's revealed that she is a level 1 member of the Heil-Ly Family. In a flashback, Cashew explains her plan to Luini, saying that she will mix the truth with lies and make sure that it hints at why she wasn't killed. Luini praises her idea and tells her to describe his scar accurately. Cashew asks if he's sure, and Luini replies that he wants to know their investigative ability, clarifying that he wants to know how long it takes between being identified and getting found. Cashew again asks if he's sure, pointing out that he will be put to death if he is caught. Luini assures her that he won't get caught and adds that even if he does, he will escape. He then remembers Morena's line about their ability providing for them if they wish hard enough. With aura swelling around him, he finally says that he has been bestowed with a gift and the power will take him where he wants to go.[2]
Back in the present, Cashew says that Luini disappeared from the bathroom after that, guessing it's a transportation Nen ability and saying that she doesn't care for it. She asks herself if it's fun to get it over with so quickly, adding that she will level up slowly and ask for the gift. Lastly, she says that she has succeeded in contacting the investigators and will now get to know them better, licking her lips in delight.[2]
Now wearing a tracksuit, Luini explains that one door and a room of impenetrable walls are the activation conditions of his ability. As he opens a portal in a wall, he says that he can go somewhere else from the wall or floor. He adds that although he can return to the original room at any time and from any location, if the original door opens and the room is no longer sealed, the Nen ability will reset and he can never use it in that room again. He says that he is also limited to places he has been to before, guessing that while he can most likely go outside the ship, he can't test it at the moment since he can't risk the danger of getting reset. After stashing two dead Cha-R members in an empty storeroom, Luini says that he will first enjoy his collaboration with the Spiders.[2]
At the warehouse entrance, the three Troupe members find the guards missing and spot a trail of blood as they begin to analyze the motives of the killer. Nobunaga eventually realizes that the first corpse was meant to mess with them, and Feitan notes that the wound was made by something bigger than a card (ruling out Hisoka's involvement), describing it as shoddy. Phinks then realizes that the perpetrator wants to pick a fight with the Cha-R, not with the Troupe. After the three members follow the blood trail to a locked door, they are confronted by Ken'i Wang, the Cha-R underboss, who asks them if they have attacked the warehouse guards. Ken'i eventually realizes that the two have a common enemy, guessing that he was a hitman from another family that desires conflict. Phinks points out that the hitman's goal may have been to get inside the hideout since those with teleportation abilities usually need to "mark" locations. Ken'i then proposes working together with the Troupe while telling himself that they are a risk factor that has to be eliminated.[2]
In a meeting with several military officials, Mizaistom describes the killings on Tier 3 and eventually connects the incidents to the Seed Urn Ceremony, surmising that the perpetrator killed in order to gain supernatural powers for himself. Back at the Cha-R's hideout on Tier 5, Ken'i shows the Troupe members the surveillance footage of the perpetrator, who made sure that the cameras never got his face. Nobunaga eventually eyes a locked door, and Ken'i asks if he wants to see what's inside. Nobunaga replies that he won't ask for free, offering to kill the hitman in exchange for the answer. At 10 a.m. on the fourth day of the voyage, Luini is shown to be at the Heil-Ly's office on Tier 3. It's then announced that a stowaway with a deadly weapon is on the loose, with the passengers asked to stay in their cabins and to keep their doors closed until instructed. Soldiers then begin to search every cabin and look for anyone without an I.D. ticket.[4]
At 8 p.m. on the fifth day of the voyage, it's announced that the alarm has been canceled since the stowaway has been arrested. It adds that the lockdown order has been lifted, and the passengers are free to move about the ship.[5]
On the seventh day of the voyage, the three Troupe members discuss the situation with Ken'i and Tajao. Ken'i explains to him that eight of their men have gone missing so far, and the same is happening to the Xi-Yu Family. The total number of missing workers is over 300, and Ken'i believes that the hitman who murdered civilians on Tier 3 has come down with accomplices to the lowest tier to keep killing. Tajao agrees that quick action is needed, but wonders how this involves the Troupe. Phinks explains that they were looking for someone named Hisoka, but that he wasn't in Tier 5. He says if Tajao can get them permission from the Xi-Yu to let them search Tier 4, they will kill the hitman. Phinks goes on to describe the hitman's Nen ability, and that the hitman is interested in the door that Tajao and Ken'i came through, guessing that it's connected to a higher tier. Tajao says that the Heil-Ly have their own door through Tserriednich, but Phinks guesses that maybe the hitman is planning to take out the Cha-R Boss, Brocco Li. Ken'i adds that Tserriednich may also be wary of Morena since she recently took over as the boss.[6]
After explaining the Mafia code of conduct, Tajao tells the Troupe members that if the Spiders kill the hitman, they will personally be at war with the Heil-Ly, and Nobunaga is fine with that. Ken'i and Tajao point out that that means the Troupe won't be able to get information or help from the low-level thugs anymore. Nobunaga comes up with a quick solution and offers to take out the Heil-Ly boss personally. It will solve the issue of Morena causing problems, and they may even get thanks from Tserriednich. Phinks asks them to verify Morena's location, telling them that they will gather the other Spiders and hunt down the hitman first. Ken'i and Tajao give each other a look, both understanding how dangerous the Troupe can be.[6]
On the tenth day of the voyage, as a Cha-R member watches surveillance footage, Nobunaga suggests getting Franklin and splitting into teams of two to search outside in shifts. Phinks guesses that he would turn them down since he hates cramped places, but Nobunaga replies that he will team up with Franklin while the two of them stay there. Feitan says that even though the enemy will be reluctant to attack the three of them together, they shouldn't lose their patience. In the front room, several Cha-R members hear a knock on the door and wonder if the search team is back, but the member watching the surveillance footage tells Vic not to open it as he quickly asks the Troupe members to come to look at the monitors.[7]
An arm is seen coming through an opening as the person knocks on the door. Phinks notes that he's toying with them when he could have taken them by surprise. The member points to another monitor and sees that the search team is returning. However, when they open the door to the front room, they find no one there, with Phinks guessing that they must have been taken. Nobunaga notes that it doesn't matter how many grunts are around if they can't use Nen. The member nervously wonders where his comrades are, but Nobunaga quickly orders him to stay in the other room and bolt the door, telling him to look for the search team on the monitors and let them know if anything happens.[7]
An opening suddenly appears on the front door, and Luini slowly reveals his face, telling the Troupe that they are acting so out of character since they should be betraying the Cha-R and using their door to the upper tiers so that they can kill all the rich scum. As Luini continues to voice his disappointment, both Phinks and Feitan react with utter disgust at his maniacal rambling, with the latter asking the extent of the Heil-Ly hitman's knowledge of their organization. Luini wonders if he should edit their wikipedia page since it currently says that they are diabolical thieves. Nobunaga quickly draws his katana and tells him to also add the line that they show no mercy to idiots that annoy them.[7]
After assuring the three Troupe members that he doesn't want to fight them, Luini proposes working together so that they can eliminate the Cha-R Family, the Xi-Yu Family, and Kakin's royal family before taking control of the Black Whale and returning to the old world to destroy it. However, Nobunaga suddenly lunges forward with his katana and stabs Luini in the head, saying that he isn't making sense and criticizing his pointless antics at the warehouse. He removes his katana and says that he will destroy him if he wants to destroy the world, striking Luini with his katana once again.[3]
Tsudonke and his men return to the office, with Nobunaga opening the door for them. Hiding his excitement at Nobuanga's gesture, Tsudonke asks what happened to the other Cha-R members. Nobunaga reveals that they were all killed, leading them to Luini's decapitated and bisected corpse. With Tsudonke unable to believe the carnage, Nobunaga explains that they found the hitman who killed the guards at the warehouse, holding up his head and adding that they have decided to destroy the Heil-Ly Family.[3]
Elsewhere on the ship, several Heil-Ly members look at the bottom half of Luini's corpse up against a nearby wall. A construction worker named Daemon (level 20) points out how much Luini's loss will affect them since he allowed them to hunt for prey from the hideout. A professional gamer named Gelato (level 19) adds how dangerous it will be now since the military is on high alert. An investigator's assistant named Perigord (level 18) suggests that someone should recreate Luini's ability. An arcade employee named Bille (level 20) says that he has already decided on his ability. Perigord reminds them that Morena said everyone has an innate type, confident that Luini was an Emitter. Bille replies that an Emitter needs to do the job, but Gelato points out that they need to figure out how to raise their levels so they can reach level 21. An Emitter and human trafficker named Voconte (level 26) suggests using his "door" Nen ability to catch prey that wander into the trap, adding that they have ways to reel them in.[3]
After one of the Xi-Yu's members falls into the Heil-Ly's trap, Hinrigh says that it's probably the same person who's been abducting their men, but Ken'i points out that Nobunaga killed the hitman. With Hinrigh left surprised, Ken'i adds that even though the Troupe members left their office, the hitman's head and torso remain there, revealing the Troupe's declaration to eliminate the Heil-Ly.[8]
Equipment[]
Knife: Luini's weapon of choice was a knife with a thin blade more than twice the length of the handle.[2]
Abilities & Powers[]
Luini quickly killed 20 people with a long knife, which suggests a certain amount of skill.[1] However, according to Feitan, his killing of several Mafia members was shoddy.[2] Luini was also one of the 22 survivors after Morena had her underlings kill each other. He seemed to be quite fast, having snatched the Troupe's guide inside the warehouse in a split second. He also seemed to have some planning and infiltration aptitude, as he successfully disguised himself at least twice,[1][2] having managed to sneak into the Cha-R Family's hideout on the latter occasion.[2]
Nen[]
Luini was an Emitter.[3] Having reached[1] (and surpassed)[2] level 21 with Morena's Nen ability, Luini's aura amount and output were increased. He also obtained a Nen ability.

Type: Emission | Spatial Teleportation* | |
Luini could only activate his ability while inside a room with a single closed door and impenetrable walls. After fulfilling these conditions, he could open a portal from the wall or floor of the room and enter an alternate dimension that allowed him to travel to any location he had previously visited. He believed that the ability would allow him to go outside the Black Whale,[1][2] although he worried about the danger of it getting reset and never had the chance to test it.[3] He was also capable of returning to the sealed room at any point and from any location; however, if the original door opened and the room was no longer sealed, the ability reset and he could never use it in that room again.[2] Luini would also use the ability to spy on targets and listen in on their conversations.[1] |
