Luzurus Hui Guo Rou (ルズールス=ホイコーロ, Ruzūrusu Hoikōro) is the 7th Prince of the Kakin Empire and the older son of King Nasubi Hui Guo Rou's second wife, Duazul. He has two older full-sisters, 2nd Prince Camilla and 5th Prince Tubeppa; and one younger full-brother, 9th Prince Halkenburg.[1] He is also the benefactor of the Cha-R Family, one of the three great Mafia families of the Kakin Empire.[2]
Appearance[]
Luzurus is a thin man with large eyes, a large pointed nose, and a defined jawline on a rectangular face. Luzurus is frequently seen with stubble, but has been seen clean-shaven for events such as the departure ceremony held in the Black Whale dining hall.[3] Unlike his full siblings, who all have hair in sharp, curving strands, Luzurus' hair is combed back, almost looking like cornrows and curls in two large puffs at the side. In earlier appearances, Luzurus hair was not colored in, giving the appearance of fair hair;[1] later appearances of Luzurus consistently depict him with dark hair.[4]
Personality[]
Not much is known about Luzurus' personality. Still, his elder half-brother 4th Prince Tserriednich thinks of him as a moron, reinforced by the fact that Luzurus' soldiers all failed the 289th Hunter Exam which Tserriednich guesses is because Luzurus had suggested assassination to his men without considering the possibility that the Hunter Exam might have had lie detectors. Given Tserriednich's pride in his intellect and his low opinion of those he considers inferior, this is somewhat questionable.[5]
Luzurus is relatively open-minded; he is willing to accept the existence of Nen and the fact that he has a Guardian Spirit Beast without any indication that he had knowledge of Nen prior to when he first spoke to the Hunters among his guards about it. He has some awareness of flexibility and strategy, willing to consider adjusting his plan due to the fact that Nen was now wide-spread knowledge, and choosing to continue with his original plan of targeting 5th Prince Tubeppa after finding out that learning Nen would likely take longer than the succession contest would last.[4] When he receives a letter disguised as a private letter from 10th Prince Kacho to be delivered to each Prince upon her death, he quickly considers the possibility that each Prince had received a different version of the letter and instinctively has a bad feeling about its contents, immediately considering the possibility that Kacho had wanted to pit him and Tserriednich against each other to help 11th Prince Fugetsu survive, and what the best course of action for him to do would be in that scenario.[6]
Luzurus has displayed consideration at times, most notably when he considers the use of the healthy drug, Clean Leaf, to rehabilitate drug addicts.[7] He has a penchant for recreational drugs and is often seen smoking some form of substance,[1][4][8][6] likely in part associated with his drug dealing in order to back the Cha-R Family.[6] He is also occasionally seen watching a large television in his master bedroom, accompanied by several guards as he does so.[8][6]
Plot[]
Succession Contest arc[]
Luzurus is first mentioned by name in a conversation between 4th Prince Tserriednich and his bodyguard Theta, where Theta reports that Luzurus' bodyguards had all failed recent Hunter Exam. Tserriednich speculates that Luzurus had suggested the idea of assassination to his men, without considering the possibility that they would fail a lie detector test.[5] Luzurus is first officially seen in a room full of various kinds of bottles, fuming smoke while he smokes from a hookah, introduced as the 7th Prince and son of 2nd Queen Duazul.[1] Likely due to his bodyguards failing to pass the Hunter Exam, Luzurus makes one of the six anonymous listings on Kakin's website. Basho applies to his listing and agrees to become his bodyguard for the trip to the Dark Continent.[9]

Beyond Netero and the princes of Kakin Empire
During the eve (of departure) festival, Luzurus is seen with the rest of his siblings and Beyond Netero on a stage, smiling at the crowd with his hands together in large robed sleeves. Unlike his fellow Princes, he appears disinterested and keeps his hands in his pockets, and does not wave at the crowd. Kakin's Royal Family is flown into the Black Whale 1 shortly after. Luzurus is next seen attending a ceremony taking place in the Black Whale 1 wearing a different outfit, dressed in a light-colored suit with one of the other attendees whispering into his ear.[3]
The Black Whale 1 departs the next day, and its departure horn is sounded, marking the beginning of the succession contest. A departure ceremony is held in a banquet hall on Tier 1, which all Princes attend to qualify as a participant in the succession contest. While the Princes attend the departure ceremony, Kurapika makes an announcement on the emergency channel about Nen beasts.[10] After Luzurus returns to Room 1007, he learns about the existence of Nen and Nen beasts from the three Hunters among his guards. He is seen with his limbs splayed out on a couch in his room, with his Guardian Spirit Beast, invisible to him, poised behind him, a large creature with an insect-like head and small wings next to its short antennae. After confirming with his guards that Nen takes almost a year of learning it to be to seen, Luzurus decides not to change his plan for the succession war and tells his men that they will continue the original plan to target 5th Prince Tubeppa first. Luzurus is aware that Nen is powerful enough to cause a stalemate, but also powerful enough for him to dominate the contest if his siblings do not know about Nen. He instructs his Hunter-bodyguards to take turns staying by his side and to let him know if they see another Nen beast.[4]

Luzuru smokes some Clean Leaf with Basho
Four hours after departure, Luzurus is introduced to Basho's "Clean Leaf" and the two smoke it together while seated on the floor. Luzurus is surprised to learn that it is legal. Basho shares that despite trying other stuff, he always comes back to it and that it works best for the heaviest smokers, even helping his friends get healthy. Luzurus wonders if it could be used to rehabilitate drug addicts, but thinks that it would be hard to get through 1st Prince Benjamin, high up in the Kakin military, since drug control is Kakin's military's job. Luzurus asks Basho how he would feel about publicizing the results of a clinical trial. Basho has no problem with it, but asks if it would not be quickest if Luzurus just became king, which prompts the prince to retort that it is not that easy.[7]

Melody's performance catches Prince Luzurus' attention
Later that night, Luzurus is contacted by Room 1014 and agrees to send his bodyguards to learn Nen under Kurapika.[11] He sends Satobi to learn Nen.[12]
On the fourth day of the voyage, a member of the Buor Family that Franklin, Nobunaga, Phinks, and Feitan had come across on Tier 5 reveals that Luzurus has ties to the Cha-R Family, one of the three biggest Mafia families from Kakin that are on board the ship.[2]
During the banquet on the eighth day of their voyage, Luzurus is briefly transfixed by the music of Melody's flute performance.[13]
On the ninth day, Luzurus watches a movie on television when Basho informs him that the rumbling of aura from 9th Prince Halkenburg's room next door has returned. A doorbell rings, and Basho tells Luzurus to stay back, before asking another guard at the intercom system about who is at the door. The guard identifies that it is one of Benjamin's private soldiers, and Kanjidol (another one of Benjamin's private soldiers and is currently guarding Luzurus) shares that he does not have a reason to expect him there. Through the guard at the door, Basho asks "Shikaku" (unbeknownst to them, currently possessed by Sumidori) what he wants. The occupants of Room 1007 hear a gunshot from the hallway and quickly draw their arms, and Rice shares what he saw over the intercom - that "Shikaku" had not their question, but instead shot himself in the head after proclaiming Benjamin. They step out to check on his corpse, and Basho notices that the rumbling has stopped, but cannot figure out where it's from.[8]
Kanjidol momentarily leaves for the VVIP area to report on the incident with Shikaku to Benjamin and what was happening in Room 1007 at the time. When he returns, he asks the guards for information, but seemingly gets nowhere until he asks Basho for his thoughts. Basho says that he thought that 2nd Queen Duazul's men were prime suspects and plotting something, but Luzurus was opposed to the idea since Duazul did not like to take action and didn't assist any prince. Kanjidol accepts his explanation and walks away. Basho watches him, but does not mention his suspicion that Shikaku's death was a charade perpetrated by Benjamin to take advantage of post-mortem Nen, choosing to have Shikaku commit suicide outside Room 1007 to act as a red herring, to throw suspicion on Halkenburg while they go after the second, third, or fourth prince. Basho mentally prepares himself to encounter people who take advantage of post-mortem Nen, considering that they commonly are used to cast a curse that haunts the target after death, but wonders if a target with a Guardian Spirit Beast can be further haunted by a curse.[14]
On the tenth day of the voyage, Kaiser speaks to Melody while she is held in the Justice Bureau on Tier 2. He lets Melody know that several princes have requested to visit her to issue pardons and request an encore, including Luzurus.[15]
At 6:00 a.m. on the eleventh day of the voyage, "Kacho" shows Melody a picture of a mark on the right shoulder blade of her sister 11th Prince Fugetsu. After some discussion, Melody suggests that it might be an injection site, coupled with the possibility of it arising from triggering a trap that was part of someone's multi-step Nen ability, and that Fugetsu was injected with some sort of drug. Melody struggles to identify a possible culprit, but in a later conversation with Melody and Kaiser in his office, "Kacho" suggests that Luzurus' Guardian Spirit Beast could be behind it, since he deals drugs to back his mafia family.[6]
After Melody points out that Luzurus was not likely consciously targeting Fugetsu, they decide that the only way to resolve the situation is to defeat Luzurus or his beast and come up with a plan to eliminate both Luzurus and his beast. They plan to use Fugetsu's Magical Worm to transport Luzurus into a lifeboat after he is knocked unconscious by Melody's music and kill him with the same mechanism that had killed Kacho. Melody points out that they would need someone who was strong enough to carry an unconscious Luzurus through Magical Worm's tunnel. "Kacho" wishes that Luzurus would be stupid enough to get on the lifeboat himself and says that it would be best if they simply poisoned or strangled Luzurus while he was knocked out. Kaiser disagrees with her, saying that it would be better to make it look like an accident. He volunteers to carry Luzurus and suggests carrying out the plan while they are being questioned so they can use it as their alibi. "Kacho" and Melody shoots him a look. Kaiser continues to elaborate that they could invalidate the testimonies of any guards claiming to be deceived by the music by simply testing them for drugs. He also points out that the explanation of "the Prince overdosed, spontaneously tried to escape, and had a heart attack" sounded plausible. "Kacho" and Melody exchange a look, and ask Kaiser where the door would connect, pointing out that Fugetsu would need to travel to Luzurus' master bedroom so that she could travel to it using her Magical Worm. Kaiser says that he can take care of that and asks them to devise a reason for Fugetsu to personally meet each Prince, telling them not to worry about the danger of assassination since he would accompany her with the Ministry of Justice. "Kacho" suggests writing a letter and framing it as her last message for each Prince, but wonders if Luzurus would allow them in, since he probably had a lot of stuff that he would rather not show the Ministry of Justice. Kaiser says that he would probably let them in depending on his negotiation skills, and worst comes to worst. He could force an excuse to search his quarters.[6]
They put their plan in motion, and shortly after, Fugetsu, escorted by the Ministry of Justice, makes her way to Room 1007 after delivering letters to Benjamin, Tubeppa, and 6th Prince Tyson. Two guards stand outside Room 1007 as Fugetsu hands over "Kacho"'s letter for Luzurus. Like Kaiser, Luzurus' guards Basho, Kanjidol, and Bharate watch the exchange. Luzurus apologizes to Fugetsu about Kacho as he receives the letter, and all parties watch him as he begins to read it.[6]
Luzurus opens and reads the letter, then says it is pretty mind-blowing, and asks Fugetsu if Kacho has said anything about the letter or is writing the same message to all the Princes. Fugetsu replies that Kacho has never had a chance to tell her. Luzurus guesses that Kacho would not have wanted to get her little sister involved and says that the contents do not directly relate to the succession but tells Kaiser that he might want to pass the letter to the higher-ups in the Ministry of Justice. Kaiser takes the letter from Luzurus and tells him that he will take a look at it while pretending to read it for the first time since "Kacho" had written the letter using information that the Ministry of Justice had gathered. He had leaked to her to act as an information "bomb" to drop on each Prince. Kaiser thinks that Luzurus' sharing of the letter was unexpected and might be a sign that he is more cautious and suspicious than expected. He reads out the letter and suggests its contents are rumors. Luzurus watches him as he explains his interpretation of the letter's contents and adds that Kacho had written that "Prince Tserriednich is the one I wouldn't want on the throne" in it. Luzurus suggests that it might have been a tactic to get the Ministry of Justice to investigate the Princes based on defamatory rumors and find and expose actual wrongdoing, though he concedes that he is not really in a position to judge others.[6]
Luzurus thinks for a moment about his off-feeling about the whole situation. Because of his interpretation that the last message seemed more like a social bomb dropped to discredit the other Princes rather than something to protect Fugetsu and his impression of Kacho as someone sharp, he concludes that the contents of the letters to each Prince were different, and that if she had intended to pit him against his fellow "snake" Tserriednich while she begged Benjamin to protect Fugetsu, acting carelessly would be dangerous. Luzurus says that he has no idea whether any of them are true and does not care to find out if so, so he tells Kaiser to keep the letter.[6]
As Fugetsu and the Ministry of Justice take their leave, Kaiser thinks to himself that their plan has worked. As they leave Room 1007's entrance hallway, Basho gives Fugetsu a good luck charm that wards the low-level evil spirits plaguing her away for a while. During "Kacho", Melody, and Kaiser's conversation in his office later at 8:50 a.m. that day after Fugetsu's visits, "Kacho" suggests acting quickly in case Luzurus was not the culprit (so that they had more time to identify the true culprit), and proposes starting when Fugetsu wakes up. She says that they would be questioned in the infirmary while Fugetsu was treated, and stationing guards and Justice Bureau officials outside the room would strengthen their alibis. Kaiser reassures them that if the tunnel were about 10 meters long, he could carry Luzurus himself and still make it in time.[6] During their conversation, Kaiser says that just the fact that they were able to mark Luzurus' room made their operation a success.[16]
Later that day, Luzurus is seen watching a movie in his master bedroom, accompanied by guards Rice and Basho.[17]
In the afternoon of the twelfth day of the voyage, special martial law is declared. Benjamin moves to have his siblings secured, telling his soldiers to prioritize finding Luzurus and 3rd Prince Zhang Lei, and to leave the lower Princes for later.[18]

This particular issue arose when their mother Queen Sevanti sent all of Momoze's Hunters and servants to Marayam. Since we only got to see 4/5 of Momoze's Hunters and 2/3 of her servants by that time, we can't say for certain which prince the marked characters initially belonged to. |
Abilities & Powers[]
As a Prince of Kakin, Luzurus holds significant political power and wealth, although not on the level of the elder princes.[4]
Guardian Spirit Beast[]

Luzurus' Guardian Spirit Beast
Like the rest of his siblings, Luzurus received an egg from which a Guardian Spirit Beast hatched to protect him.[1] Since it is a parasitic-type ability, he has no control over it. The Nen beast is subjected to two rule-like instincts: it is unable to fight other Guardian Spirit Beasts as well as to directly attack the host of one.[4]
It takes the appearance of a giant centipede-like creature. It is a Conjurer that makes use of pseudo-coercive Manipulation. It has the ability to set traps by materializing whatever the target desires as bait. When the target satiates their desire, the trap is sprung and the ability activated.[19]
