Marayam Hui Guo Rou (マラヤーム=ホイコーロ, Marayāmu Hoikōro) is the Thirteenth Prince of the Kakin Empire, youngest son among the 14 legal princes, and the younger of his father's seventh wife Queen Sevanti's two children. Marayam had one older biological/full sister, 12th Prince Momoze.[1]
Appearance[]
Marayam is a small child with short, spiky black hair, and widely-spaced vaguely almond-shaped eyes. He is a tad chubby.[1]
In his few public appearances, he wears a tuxedo with a bowtie and black shorts instead of dress pants.[2][3] When in his room, he wears more simple clothing.[4][5][6]
Personality[]
Marayam appears to be fond of his pet hamster, and he carries it with him even to formal events. He also seems to enjoy video games.[7] He appears to be reluctant to manifest negative feelings,[8] while he is quite open about his joy while playing.[6] He's often seen with his mother[2][3][9][10] though unlike his infant half-sister, is independent enough to make some public appearances without her.[2]
Plot[]
Succession Contest arc[]

Marayam's first appearance
Marayam is first seen among Kakin's fourteen princes, seen watching three hamsters in a cage.[1] He is one of six princes to put up listings on Kakin's website. Biscuit applies to his listing and is hired to become his bodyguard for the trip to the Dark Continent.[1][7]

Marayam in the middle of the group, waving to the crowd during the eve festival
During the eve (of the voyage) festival, Marayam stands with his siblings and Beyond on stage and waves to the crowd. He carries a hamster cage with him. Kakin's royal family is flown into the Black Whale 1 shortly after. Marayam is next seen attending a banquet taking place that same day in the Black Whale, seated on a stool and peering into his hamster cage while his mother 7th Queen Sevanti and sister 12th Prince Momoze entertain guests nearby.[2]

Marayam's dragon-like Guardian Spirit Beast exploring Room 1014
On the first day of the voyage, Marayam attends a lunch banquet with his siblings, holding his hamster cage above his head and peering into it as he follow Sevanti around.[3] Unbeknownst to him, his Guardian Spirit Beast (a graceful dragon with legs) wanders into Room 1014 with several other Nen beasts, prompting Kurapika to make an emergency announcement about Nen beasts across Tier 1.[11][note 1]

Sevanti reassigning Momoze's staff to Marayam
After retiring from the lunch banquet, Sevanti takes him to Room 1012 (Momoze's room) and has most of Momoze's team (including Vergei(Sevanti's Captain of the Guards who also becomes Marayam's Captain of the Guards) and Hanzo) assigned to Marayam's escort. Marayam is seen clinging to his mother's clothes as she explains his fear as reason for the reassignment and insists on the importance on protecting him. The guards and servants are wary, and reluctantly comply with Sevanti's orders.[9]
Four hours after the departure, Marayam and Sevanti have a meal in Room 1013. Sevanti leaves her food aside while she happily cleans up a mess Marayam made, and Marayam is content to ignore her and continue eating. Oblivious to them, Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast (now grown in size) standing behind them, and Hanzo and Biscuit standing guard, watch each other.[10]

Marayam and his mother, oblivious to the Guardian Spirit Beast
Later, 8th Queen Oito spies on Marayam and his mother accompanying him while he plays with toy cars, through a cockroach she controls with Little Eye. Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast is seen coiled up behind him again, bigger and bulkier than before.[4]
Later that night, Marayam is contacted by Room 1014 and agrees to send his bodyguards to learn Nen under Kurapika.[12] He sends Sevanti's guard Barrigen and the hunter Belerainte to learn Nen.[13] Lessons begin at 9 a.m. the next morning in Room 1014, but shortly after the lessons begin, Barrigen is killed by Silent Majority.[14]
At the same time, Hanzo and Biscuit stand guard over Marayam and Sevanti. Room 1013's occupants remain unaware of Barrigen's death. Sevanti has her head in her hands while Marayam stares at his hamster cage. Hanzo and Biscuit note that Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast has grown once again, now almost ten times as tall as Marayam while the beast is seated, and covered in spines. Hanzo guesses that despite not being told of his sister's death, the anxiety, fear, trauma, and stress that Marayam feels has affected his Guardian Spirit Beast.[8]

Hanzo threatened by Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast
At 10 a.m., Hanzo and Biscuit's shift ends, and Hanzo sets out to avenge Momoze. From the guard's rest room in Room 1013, he activates Hanzo Skill 4 and makes his way to the cells where Momoze's former guards are held in custody, and strangles the perpetrator. He makes his way back to Room 1013, and finds the room abandoned and its occupants vanished. He checks several rooms, and comes across Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast, now smaller but more sinister in appearance. Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast is now roughly Hanzo's height when it is seated, but is covered in even more spikes and spines than before, and has thorny vines growing out its back. Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast watches him intently, and brandishes the mouths at the end of the vines at Hanzo when he takes a single step towards it. Unable to decide whether it can distinguish between friend or foe,[8] Hanzo decides to retreat and searches for a way to contact Room 1013.[15]
Hanzo first checks Room 1012 but finds it cordoned off after Momoze's death. He turns to Room 1014, the only place he can access as an outsourced guard commissioned by Sevanti, to get Kurapika's assistance. Hanzo tells Kurapika that Room 1013's phone isn't functioning, that its occupants (including Marayam and Sevanti) are gone, and that only Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast is there. Hanzo suggests that the disappearance was not an enemy attack considering Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast remained, but has no way to confirm it. By sheer coincidence, Room 1014 receives a call from Vergei in Room 1013 at that moment, and Hanzo dashes to Room 1013, only to see that it still remains empty.[15]

Vergei contacting Room 1014
Marayam and Sevanti play with toys near Vergei as he makes the call. Kurapika tries to tell Vergei that Marayam's quarters were transported somewhere else and ask for a Hunter to check outside the door, but Vergei remains unbelieving and obstinate, and asks for information on the culprit behind Momoze's death in exchange for sending him the hunters originally assigned to Momoze. Kurapika tries to get Vergei to join their coalition with the third, fifth, and ninth Princes, but Vergei remains doubtful and calls Kurapika out, believing the situation to be too convenient for Kurapika between the deaths in Room 1014 and Barrigen's death. The call ends without much progress on Kurapika's side. Hanzo lets Kurapika know he plans to investigate before his ability deactivates and offers to help look into things for him, but Kurapika tells him to prioritize information for Marayam's safety. After Hanzo leaves, Sakata approaches Kurapika to learn about what happened to Room 1013 and Kurapika suggests that the disappearance was an act of defense by Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast.[5]
The morning of the third day, Biscuit deactivates Hanzo's ability and he tells her about the missing Room 1013 and Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast. They enter Marayam's master bedroom to see Vergei loudly advising Sevanti to stop Belerainte from continuing Nen lessons while Marayam sleeps in a cot. Biscuit and Hanzo offer to teach the staff in Room 1013 Nen, and Biscuit transforms into her true muscular form to convince Vergei of the existence of Nen. Vergei is transfixed by the sight of her appearance, and agrees to let Belerainte go to Room 1014 to learn Nen. They learn that they are in a one-way Nen space, those that leave becoming unable to return, and Biscuit informs Vergei that it is likely the ability of Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast.[16]
Later that day, Belerainte helps Kurapika placate the participants of his Nen lessons after Myuhan's death. In return, Kurapika lets him borrow Bill, so that he can try and give information to Room 1013 without drawing suspicion by standing outside and pretending to have a conversation with Bill.[17]

Biscuit playing with Marayam
On Sunday, the eighth day, Marayam does not attend the banquet dinner.[note 2] Several of Marayam's servants leave Room 1013 to perform at the banquet, unable to back out as it could be used as a reason to summon Marayam or Sevanti and force them to leave the true Room 1013. Biscuit and Vergei decide to move the Hunters assigned to Marayam to the real-world Room 1013 to make it appear more natural and reduce the burden on the servants in the true Room 1013. Biscuit decides to stay, telling Vergei that he'd need a woman around. Marayam calls for Biscuit, and she turns to him and plays with him.[6]
On the tenth day, Sarahell, Captain of 2nd Prince Camilla's guards, briefs her men on the possibility of their enemies using curses or having Nen exorcists. Among the men receiving the briefing is Taler, one of Camilla's men, in charge of placing a curse on Marayam.[18]
Between 6:00 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. on the eleventh day of the voyage, 11th Prince Fugetsu is escorted around Tier 1 by Kaiser and the Ministry of Justice to deliver a letter that the recently-deceased 10th Prince Kacho had written for each Prince, to be delivered in case of her death. Marayam rejects their letter.[19]
Marayam is seen later that day playing with his toys in his room, accompanied by Sevanti, who is worried he might fall as he reaches to place a brick on a high spot while standing on the other placed bricks, Biscuit, and another servant.[20]

This particular issue arose when their mother Queen Sevanti sent all of Momoze's Hunters and servants to Marayam. Since we only got to see 4/5 of Momoze's Hunters and 2/3 of her servants by that time, we can't say for certain which prince the marked characters initially belonged to. |
Abilities & Powers[]
According to 5th Prince Tubeppa, owing to Marayam's position as a younger prince, he had no real political influence or power despite being a member of Kakin's royal family.[21]
Guardian Spirit Beast[]

Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast
Like the rest of his siblings, Marayam has received an egg from which a Guardian Spirit Beast, a variety of Nen beast, has hatched to protect him.[1] As a parasitic-type ability, he has no control over it. The Guardian Spirit Beast is made out of aura, thus only Nen users can see and hear it.[11]It is subjected to two rule-like instincts: it is unable to fight other Guardian Spirit Beasts as well as to directly attack the host of one.[21]
The full extent of its abilities is unknown, but it has been observed to grow in size.[11][10][4] The changes in its appearance reflect Marayam's feelings: after the death of his sister, the Nen beast became huge and covered in spikes. Hanzo ran into a smaller, fiercer-looking version of Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast with the ability to extend jagged tendrils.[8] It has been suspected of being responsible for putting up a spatiotemporal barrier around Room 1013: exit and phoning from the room are permitted, but whoever tries to enter it from outside is transported to an alternate, empty room. Someone who steps outside the real room will be unable to see its contents or hear sounds coming from it even if the door is open, whereas people inside will not experience anything unusual.[16] This suggests that Marayam's Nen beast can use Emission, Conjuration or perhaps a combination of the two.[5]

Notes
- ↑ It is unclear whether Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast wandered around Room 1014 after he returned from the ceremony, or while he was there. Some points suggest it was after he returned, but nothing has been specified.
- ↑ Marayam is the only living prince to not be seen reacting to Melody's performance through the speaker system on Tier 1 (other than Kacho and Fugetsu, who were using it as a cover to escape). While it could simply be the case that his reaction was irrelevant to the story, it is also possible that Room 1013 is unable to hear things played over the speaker system. The fact that Vergei could call Room 1013 could be another effect of the one-way Nen space, allowing outgoing communication but not receiving incoming communication.
