Musse (ムッセ, Musse) was a high-ranking soldier in the Royal Army of the Kakin Empire, and one of the personal soldiers of 1st Prince Benjamin.[1] Under Benjamin's orders, he joined the guard of 2nd Prince Camilla.[2]
Appearance[]
Musse had a rectangular-shaped head and kept his hair neatly combed. His most identifiable trait was his asymmetrical eyes, a sleepy right eye, and a piercing left eye. He wore the standard Kakin military attire of zipper jacket, pants, and dark combat boots. He also wore an earpiece in his left ear.[1]
Personality[]
Musse was cold, calculating, and never liked to take on risks, unless with absolute certainty.[2]
Background[]
As one of the First Prince's soldiers, Musse graduated from Kakin's Royal Military Academy and became a part of his army.[3]
Plot[]
Succession Contest arc[]

Benjamin orders his soldiers to act as Royal Guards
On the first day of the voyage, 1st Prince Benjamin orders his soldiers to both act as bodyguards and spies to all the other Princes, and to report any information regarding the Princes' Guardian Spirit Beasts and the Hunters' abilities.[1] Later, using his Secret Window Nen ability, Musse eavesdrops on a conversation over dinner between 2nd Prince Camilla and her mother 2nd Queen Duazul where the two conspire to kill Benjamin and 9th Prince Halkenburg. Musse decides that their conversation would not be definitive proof of any wrongdoing, and decides to "send a bird" to Camilla to get evidence and prevent her from making excuses.[2]

Musse questions Camilla
The following day, Musse sees Camilla approach him in Room 1002's servants' quarters[note 1] and asks her if there is anything she wants. Camilla calmly states her intent to kill Benjamin, and gives Musse the choice between helping her or dying. Musse warns her that he did not find the situation funny,[4] and draws his gun at her. Musse tells Camilla that she is under arrest for conspiring to assassinate Benjamin, and that he has recorded their conversation and would shoot if she moves towards him. Camilla verbally taunts him to do so, and begins walking towards him. Musse notices that she is in Zetsu, and becomes wary of her being a counteractive-type Nen user confident in her ability. He decides to take the risk and shoot, judging that he would either be able to kill her or to find out her ability. Musse opens fire and hits her once in the head and twice in the chest. Despite Camilla seemingly being dead, Musse decides not to let his guard down and touches her body to activate Secret Window. Right after he does so, Camilla's Cat's Name activates, crushing and kneading the life force out of Musse before using the energy to revive Camilla. Camilla's guards rush in and she informs them that Musse had escaped before ordering them to burn his possessions while she pursues him. Camilla is eventually arrested by Benjamin and his men, and Benjamin inherits Musse's Nen ability.[3]
Right after his trial against Camilla, Benjamin activates Musse's Nen ability to spy on Camilla.[5]
On the eleventh day of the voyage, 11th Prince Fugetsu Hui Guo Rou gives Benjamin a letter containing information the Ministry of Justice had gathered, which Kaiser had decided would surprise Benjamin. In an attempt to change the subject and not talk about the contents of the letter, Benjamin asks Kaiser about the progress of their investigation into Musse's location. Kaiser tells him that they have not found Musse but offers to force a search of the other Princes' quarters to do so and trails off to let Benjamin speak his mind.[6]
Equipment[]
Handgun: Musse wields a handgun of unknown brand and caliber. Camilla picked it up after his death, but Benjamin's private army soon confiscated it.[3]
Abilities & Powers[]
Musse has received military training.[1] He is a very capable marksman, inflicting Camilla three lethal wounds before her body hit the ground.[3]
Nen[]
Musse was a Nen user, although his superior Balsamilco Might believes him to be less knowledgeable than Hunters in that regard.[7] He has nonetheless enough expertise in the field to be aware of the existence of counteractive-type Nen abilities and to recognize the associated tactics.[3]

![]() | Musse's ability allows him to create three owl-shaped constructs referred to as "birds" (念獣, tori; base kanji lit. "Nen beasts") to gather intelligence.[3] One of them can eavesdrop on conversations despite physical barriers, such as doors, and distance, while perched on Musse's shoulder.[2] Another, the "Owl", is activated by physically touching the target. The "Owl" transmits the target's actions and words to the user, who is the only person capable of seeing it.[3] Only one bird, either of each type or at all, can be in existence at any given time.[8] The first bird-shaped construct appears to be made out of pure aura, possibly implying the ability makes use of Emission. Following Musse's death, this ability was inherited by Prince Benjamin.[3] |

Notes
- ↑ The location this incident happens most likely is the servants' quarters. If this is true, several panels from Chapter 373 include a door drawn on the wrong side, and a wall where a recess should be, judging from the layout of the Princes' rooms given in Chapter 363.
Intertextuality and References[]
- Musse's ability's name is possibly a reference to Hitchcock's Rear Window. The 裏窓 from Musse's ability's name matches the Japanese title of Rear Window exactly, and a part of the movie involves closely observing a suspected perpetrator from a distance to try and find evidence of his wrongdoing.
