The Preview Market (プレビュー(いち)()()()()()()()()(), Purebyū Ichiba) is one of the markets in Yorknew City where items are auctioned that could not be indexed in the official catalogs (such as the Southernpiece Catalog) because of insufficient time .[1]

Background[]

Merchants come here to appraise the items and decide the prices they will pay. It's the best place to let merchants know what one has to sell and when they will sell. However, it is full of traps, and highly valuable items can end up being greatly undervalued, as in the case of Gon and Killua's jewelry. The organizer of the market is Taloon.[1]

The auction times are decided by a lottery drawing.[2]

Plot[]

Yorknew City arc[]

Under the guidance of Zepile, Gon and Killua take their newly-acquired jewelry and wooden vault to the Preview Market. Taloon, the market's organizer, greets the group and later appraises the jewelry, complimenting its pristine beauty. Zepile says they want to preview the items for tomorrow's auction, and Taloon agrees. Infatuated with the jewels, he unprofessionally offers 250 million, but Zepile quickly declines. Taloon understands since the jewelry could make more at the auction. He then leads the group to the preview floor and signals someone as he walks away. As others are impressed by the vault's authenticity, a group of men suddenly enter, and one of them says that while the vault could be real, the jewelry inside might not be.[1]

As the men continue to denounce the authenticity of the wooden box and jewelry, Zepile tells Gon and Killua that they are trying to lower the price by creating doubt. The men go as far as to explain how the jewels and the wooden box could be fake and explain that even if the wooden box is authentic, the jewels could be fake through doctoring methods such as transplants, facelifts, or cauterization. The other buyers start to talk amongst themselves and doubt the authenticity of the items.[3]

After Leorio calls Gon and Killua with an update on the Phantom Troupe, the two boys leave Zepile and put him in charge of auctioning the item, telling him to get the best price he can.[4] That night, the boys meet Zepile and Leorio in their hotel room and find the two drinking together. Leorio mentions that the Preview Market auction will start tomorrow and asks if they are also planning to go. The two politely decline and explain that they need to learn more about Nen from Kurapika.[5]

On the day of the Preview Market auction, the wooden box and jewelry sell for 355 million. Leorio is elated, but a disappointed Zepile says that it could have sold for 400 million if they had drawn a better time slot. Leorio jokingly suggests splitting the amount and taking 170 million each. Zepile realizes he will get many more opportunities if he stays with Gon and Killua, saying that the experience will be priceless (and Leorio happily agrees).[2]
