Puzzle & Dragons, shortened to Pazudora (パズドラ) in Japanese, is a puzzle RPG video game created by GungHo Entertainment. The game was initially released on January 11th, 2012 in Japanese for the Amazon Fire, and has since been released on other platforms and in North America and the European Union.

Basic Gameplay[]

Puzzle & Dragons combines a match-three puzzle game with a turn-based battle system, where matching sets correspond to elemental damage to the opponent or health regained for the player, depending on the symbols matched.

The player's party consists of characters that they collect, with each character belonging to a certain type. The player can also use characters as materials to fuse with their other characters to power them up. When the player matches tiles of a specific elemental type, the character in the player's party with that same type will make an attack on the enemy. Making combos causes multiplied damage to the opponent. In addition, characters have an Active Skill that will charge up over time by making matches, which can be used after they have finished charging without the need to match tiles to active them. Many characters also have a Leader Skill which, unlike Active Skills, have passive effects. A player's party consists of up to five characters, with a sixth slot available for the player to assign a helper character to in battle.

The player can make a move every single turn, while the opponent only makes a move after a specified number of turns has passed and their turn counter reaches zero.

Players can collect basic elemental characters by gathering eggs from battle, which will hatch into characters. Puzzle & Dragons also has a gacha system, where special items earned will allow the player to make pulls from different gacha machines.

Hunter × Hunter Collaborations[]

First Collaboration[]

Puzzle & Dragons Collab Gacha 1 Info and Hisoka Dragon

Gacha Info and Hisoka Dragon

The first Hunter × Hunter collaboration gacha with Puzzle & Dragons ran from Monday December 23rd, 2013 to Sunday January 5th, 2014, and was done in collaboration with the release of the movie Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission. The event was only released in the Japanese version of the game.

The gacha portion of the event included ten Hunter × Hunter characters that could be pulled from the gacha. A special Hunter × Hunter dungeon was also available as part of the event, where the primary enemies to fight against were several of the Chimera Ants. Players could obtain Chimera Ant eggs from defeating enemies in the dungeon to collect those characters as well.

Kurapika and Killua were the first characters to be announced for the collab, followed by the other available gacha characters (minus Chrollo and Jed, who were announced last), and later the Chimera Ants and their dungeon.

The gacha for the event had a Hisoka-themed dragon. The characters available to collect from the gacha were Gon (No.1009), Killua (No.1011), Kurapika (No.1013), Leorio (No.1015), Biscuit (No.1017), Chrollo (No.1019), Hisoka (No.1021), Netero (No.1023), Genthru (No.1025), and Jed (No.1027).

The dungeon portion of the event contained ten Chimera Ant characters. The dungeon was themed around the Republic of East Gorteau and consisted of four standard battles against two Chimera Ants each and a boss battle. Battle 1 was against Pike (Wood) and Zazan (Dark); Battle 2 was against Hina (Light) and Leol (Water); Battle 3 was against Colt (Wood) and Rammot (Water); Battle 4 was against Menthuthuyoupi (Fire and Light) and Shaiapouf (Light and Wood); the boss battle was against Meruem (Light and Dark). In addition, a random battle against Neferpitou (Dark) would occasionally appear.

In battle, the Chimera Ants appeared in their evolved forms, except for Neferpitou.

Second Collaboration[]

The second Hunter × Hunter collab with Puzzle & Dragons began on July 20th, 2015 and ran until the end of day on August 2nd, 2015. The collaboration was between Puzzle & Dragons and the mobile game Hunter × Hunter Battle AllStars (HUNTER×HUNTER バトルオールスターズ). Like the Last Mission collaboration, this collab was only available in the Japanese version of the game.

Many things about this collaboration were similar or identical to the previous collaboration. The Chimera Ant dungeon returned with the same characters appearing as enemies. In addition, the gacha was very similar to the previous, with the same Hisoka dragon being used as the gacha machine. Nine of the ten characters returned as part of the gacha, with the only missing previous gacha character being Jed. In this collab, Jed was replaced with Kite, who appeared in the game for the first time.

In addition, Gon, Killua, and Leorio's ultimate evolutions were obtainable for the first time.

Third Collaboration[]

Puzzle & Dragons Hajidora Power Up Event 3 Banner

The third Puzzle & Dragons collab with Hunter × Hunter was for the game's third Hajidora Power Up event. Hajidora was a four month long event with different installments with different collabs leading up to the 5th anniversary of Puzzle & Dragons on February 20th, 2017. The third Hajidora event, which collabed with Hunter × Hunter, began on January 21st, 2017.

The Power Up events focused on boosting character stats and abilities, and therefore no new gacha or characters were released with these events. In the Hunter × Hunter Power Up event, many of the previously released characters got some form of stat or ability boost. As this event did not add new Hunter × Hunter characters, and the all of the previously released Hunter × Hunter characters were only available in the Japanese version of the game, this event was also exclusive to the Japanese game.

Below is a list of the stat and ability changes that happened to specific character forms.

Trivia[]

  • On the same day that the second collaboration launched (July 20, 2015) , there was a glitch in the app when users would attempt to pull characters from the gacha that resulted in characters from the previous collaboration (Duel Masters) appearing instead. As a result, the gacha was temporarily disabled until the issue was fixed.
    • The issue was fixed by 3:55 AM that same day, and users who had previously spent gems on the gacha were refunded.
