Rengoku was an On user and previously, a member of the Shadow, which were the Hunter Association's secret operation squad. The squad was annihilated by the chairman Isaac Netero as they began to use On. However, she survived along with Shura and Gaki. Using their hatred, the three revived their leader Jed in order to destroy the Association and avenge their mates' deaths. The four then forced the Hunter Association to disclose the Black Report to the public.
The Last Mission
Rengoku, along with Shura and Gaki, revives Jed by vowing a lifelong loyalty to serve him and take revenge on all Hunters. They infiltrate Heavens Arena in which she was sent to capture Netero. She sacrifices her life in order to seal his aura, preventing him from using his Nen. Once she is done, she is taken by Jed to the top of the building where he threatens to kill Netero if the Hunter Association doesn't give him the Black Report.
Despite her death, Rengoku still reacts to Killua convincing her to disengage her On. She sheds a tear, followed by revocation of her On, thus releasing Netero.
Abilities & Powers
Rengoku's main ability is her On, which she uses by sacrificing her life, but she is also powerful enough to infect the Floor Masters with Jed's blood. She is good at concealing her own aura, so that Killua and Gon could not detect her approaching.

|Rengoku can take her own life in exchange for sealing her target's aura. This is powerful enough to restrain Netero, widely considered one of the best Nen users in the world, and prevent him from using aura. Her On takes the form of dark, feathered tendrils that ensnare the target. It can also act autonomously to defend itself after Rengoku's death, attacking hostile entities and forming an energy shield around their corpse. Her On retains part of her mind, so it is susceptible to change according to her state of mind, as seen when Killua convinced her to disengage it.|
- The character's name literally means Purgatory—an intermediate state after death for expiatory purification according to the belief of some Christians or, more generically, postmortem suffering short of everlasting damnation, used to mean any place/condition of suffering or torment, especially one that is temporary.
- The concept of purgatory, and especially its Japanese term [煉 (ren, “to refine”) + 獄 (goku, “prison”)], is thematically related to Rengoku's On ability.
