The Seed Urn (()(ちゅう)(らん)()()()()()()(), Kochūran) is one of the Kakin Empire's regalia, along with the Lotus Anchorite and the Sword of Good Omens. It is described as the Ritual Vase used for the Succession Battle participants.[1]

Background[]

According to ancient manuscripts, the First King of Kakin conjured the seed urn, inspired by "Worm Toxin" (()(どく)()()()()()()()(), Kodoku). Nasubi Hui Guo Rou mentions that the Succession Contest may be its historically correct use.[2] According to Nasubi, the Seed Urn was created during the age of rival warlords, when the small then-Kakin could have been absorbed into its neighbors at any time.[3]

The Seed Urn Ceremony[]

The Seed Urn Ceremony (()(ちゅう)(らん)()()()()()()(), Kochūran no Gi) is part of the Kakin Royal Family tradition. To prove one's inheritance to the urn, the host focuses their desire for the crown and offers a drop of their blood to the urn, then puts their hand in its mouth-like opening. At this point, purple smoke fumes from the urn, and a tiny female sprite dressed in Kakin traditional clothing is holding a small egg, which she inserts into the host's mouth. The princes will thus be granted a Guardian Spirit Beast when the egg hatches.[2]

The sprite is invisible to ordinary people,[2] since it is made out of Nen, which caused 8th Queen Oito to originally believe that the ceremony was only a purposeless tradition of the Royal Family.[4]

After receiving the egg, trying to escape the Succession War will result in the fugitive's death by countless ghostly hands that appear around the person (enforcing the ceremony's conditions), speculatively the Lotus Anchorite in action.[5]

Succession Contest arc[]

The Beginning of the Contest[]

In preparation for the upcoming succession contest, Nugui, butler of Kakin's King Nasubi Hui Guo Rou, brings the Seed Urn separately to each child of Nasubi's legal wives to conduct a ritual. Nugui explains the eligibility criteria for the succession contest, and has those who agree to its terms offer a drop of blood to the Seed Urn, then insert a hand into its center. Kakin's 4th Prince Tserriednich lets a drop of blood drip from his index finger into the Seed Urn from above, then, with reassurance from Nugui that it would not bite, inserts his hand into its mouth-like orifice. Unbeknownst to him, a cloud of aura puffs up from its main opening, and a small Nen sprite slips a small egg-like object into his mouth. The sprite retreats back into the pot, and Tserriednich, unable to sense what had happened, asks if that was it, incorrectly believing that nothing had happened. Nugui explains that he had completed the Seed Urn Ceremony, part of the Kakin royal family tradition.[2]

In a flashback, Nasubi explains that it is believed that one will be granted a special power by proving their inheritance to the urn with blood, and focusing on one's desire for the crown. He elaborates that according to ancient manuscripts, Kakin's First King conjured the Seed Urn, inspired by worm toxin, and that the succession contest may well be the historically correct use of the urn. Nasubi reveals that with the ability of the urn, the children, unaware, will raise a spirit beast that will protect them. Each spirit beast will take after its vessel, and Nasubi believes that a fragile, weak vessel cannot be king.[2]

On the first day of the voyage and of the succession contest, Nasubi's thoughts wander to the Guardian Spirit Beasts endowed to his children by the Seed Urn as he watches them during the departure ceremony. He reflects upon its heritage and thinks about the time of its creation; during the age of rival warlords, the ruler of the then-small Kakin created the Seed Urn, letting him build the foundation for Kakin to become a superpower by making his children fight for unification.[3]

An Item to be Stolen[]

On the twelfth day of the voyage, Chrollo wanders around Tier 3 as people gather for 9th Prince Halkenburg's funeral procession . After being unsuccessful in using Love Dial 6700 to search for a partner, Chrollo concludes that the person he seeks is not on Tier 3. He debates moving up to Tier 1 because of his awareness that it is where the succession contest is being held, with the expectation that there are many people with abilities hiding there. Chrollo's mind wanders from his search for an ability and his thoughts turn toward the three sacred treasures he seeks—the Seed Urn, the Lotus Anchorite, and the Sword of Good Omens.[1]

As he walks through Tier 3, Chrollo tries to identify where the three sacred treasures were kept. Because neither mafia nor military reacted to their presence and searching despite the royal family's likely awareness of their search from the bottom up, Chrollo concludes that three sacred treasures are not likely to on Tiers 3–5. Chrollo thinks of the importance of the three sacred treasures to the succession battle and the maintenance of Kakin's prosperity, and guesses at the existence of a funeral hall focal point where the treasures are enshrined, which would only be on Tier 1. His thoughts wander back to Hisoka, and about how stealing Kakin's holy treasures, more strictly guarded than King Nasubi himself, would satisfy the conditions required to upgrade Skill Hunter and grant him the power needed to kill Hisoka for good.[1]

Chrollo unsuccessfully uses Love Dial 6700 again in the crowd gathered for Halkenburg's funeral procession and decides that what he seeks is upstairs.[1]
