"Breaking the rules means rejecting the Spiders, and Chrollo, too. That I never want to do."

— Shizuku to Phinks in "September 4th: Part 14"

Shizuku Murasaki (シズク=ムラサキ, Shizuku Murasaki) is member #8 of the Phantom Troupe.[3] Her physical strength ranked twelfth among the group.[4]

Shizuku's manga appearance

Shizuku is a petite young woman with short-layered black hair and plum eyes. She has a large bust, slim waist, and wide hips, giving her an hourglass figure. She wears a black turtleneck and jeans, accessorized with black-framed glasses and a necklace bearing St. Peter's Cross, similar to the insignia on the back of Chrollo's coat. Shizuku also wears earrings ornamented with a reversed cross that are usually covered by her hair.[5] Above her sweater sleeves, she wears a bracelet on each wrist.[6]

Shizuku's Tattoo - Episode 97

Shizuku's spider tattoo

Her spider tattoo is located on the lower left of her midsection, with the number 8 on the spider's abdomen.[7]

Personality[]

Baise killed by Shizuku

Shizuku brutally murdering Baise

Shizuku is very calm. She did not emote even when announcing that, according to her fortune, she would die the following week.[3] She is characterized as aloof, callous, and soulless. Her blunt, cold statements frequently offend those around her and create resentment. She is forgetful to the point of short-term memory loss; sometimes, she forgets people's names or believes she has never met them before. She can be air-headed, which often causes opponents to underestimate her combat abilities. Shizuku is extremely loyal to the "Spider" and she believes in the Troupe's rules set forth by Chrollo, being strongly against members fighting one another.[8] When she arm-wrestled Gon, Shizuku politely cooperated with his extending his right hand and extends her own, despite it disadvantaging her and causing her to ultimately lose.[6]

Pakunoda's death

Shizuku checking on Pakunoda's body

Shizuku is friendly with other members of the Troupe, as seen when she frequently teams up with Franklin in combat,[9] was visibly distraught over Pakunoda's death,[10] casually played chess with Kortopi,[11] and was on Nobunaga's side in the conflict of whether to pursue Pakunoda or not, but ultimately respecting Spider's rules.[8]

Like the other members of the Troupe, Shizuku is also cold-blooded, ruthless, and not above inhumane mass murder.[12] She never hesitates to kill when commanded, only caring about the lives of her teammates. She is willing to kill even for trivial reasons; for example, when she asks Chrollo whether to kill Leorio for just being too loud.[13] It is worth noticing that even the most violent members of the Troupe have a certain degree of reservation on unnecessary killings.[14]

2011 EP97 Shizuku prepares to fight the ants

Shizuku protecting her hometown

The inhabitants of Meteor City are also stated to share remarkable bonds that have been described as "thinner than water, and yet thicker than blood".[15] This was also proven by the fact that the Phantom Troupe is a major asset in the defense of the city. Shizuku was also one of the Spiders who defended the city from the Chimera Ants.[5]

Background[]

HxH2011 EP24 Meteor City

Shizuku's hometown, Meteor City

Not much is known about Shizuku's past. Like several members of the Phantom Troupe, she originated from Meteor City, a junkyard city inhabited by outcasts. People who live there do not exist in any official records, and the existence of the city itself is known to a very few people.[15]

She replaced the former member #8 of the Troupe,[16] possibly the one killed by Silva Zoldyck three years prior to the events in Yorknew.[17] At one point, she was almost killed while trying to glimpse Feitan's Nen abilities.[18]

Plot[]

Yorknew City arc[]

Blinky

Shizuku using Blinky to remove all evidence of the auction massacre

On August 31st, Shizuku and the other Phantom Troupe members meet at an undisclosed location in Yorknew City. Their leader, Chrollo, announces that they will steal all the items at the Underground Auction.[16] The following day, she pickpockets a bystander to participate in a conditional auction to try and win a diamond by arm-wrestling Gon. Despite using her weak hand, she proves to be a tough contender. Franklin and Feitan prevent her from trying again, since the auction is about to begin.[6] When the doors of the auction close, she waits in the hallway to get rid of anyone who manages to escape Franklin's slaughter, quickly killing Ivlenkov and Baise with her conjured vacuum cleaner, Blinky, before cleaning all traces of the massacre.[12] The Spiders make their escape in a hot-air balloon and tell Chrollo that the auction items were already missing. Chrollo orders them to attack the Mafia to lure out a group of powerful Nen users called the Shadow Beasts.[19]

2011 EP43 Troupe watches as Mafia gathers below

Shizuku watching Uvogin fighting

Once their balloon is shot down in the Gordeau Desert, they see dozens of Mafia members waiting for them, with Shizuku hoping that she won't have to clean up another massacre. While Uvogin slaughters the Mafia members and confronts four Shadow Beasts by himself, she is seen playing cards with Shalnark and Machi.[20] She covers her ears in time to avoid being deafened by Uvogin's scream. After Uvogin kills the four Shadow Beasts, she tells him that she can remove the poison from his body, but not the leeches, reminding him that Blinky doesn't work on living things.[21]

HxH2011 EP44 Shizuku preparing to remove the poison

Before she can do so, however, Uvogin is captured by Kurapika. Shizuku, Machi, Feitan, Shalnark, and Nobunaga steal a car to give chase, but they are forced to abandon it when Owl shrinks it with his Fun Fun Cloth. Counting the remaining Shadow Beasts, Shizuku determines that the chain user is not one of them.[2] The Spiders wipe out the group and take Owl captive.[4][22] They then intercept Dalzollene's call and find out where Uvogin is being held captive.[23]

HxH2011 EP45 Blinky IMG1

Shizuku conjuring Blinky

Shizuku, Nobunaga, Shalnark, Machi, and Phinks disguise themselves and free Uvogin, with Shizuku using Blinky to remove the neurotoxin from his body.[23] His roar alerts his captors and causes them to flee, with Shizuku noting that he was too loud.[24] She is at the hideout when Machi, Nobunaga, Phinks, and Pakunoda return after capturing Gon and Killua. The two boys remember her from the arm-wrestling bout, but despite Franklin's efforts to jog her memory, she cannot remember them and insists that she wouldn't lose to a kid, wondering why she would use her weak hand.[25] Witnessing Nobunaga's amused laughter upon Gon's question what does it matter if he is indeed an Enhancer, through sign language she asked for Phinks' opinion on the samurai's sanity, with the latter replying by just shrugging.[26]

EP 51 OP Card

Shizuku being ordered to kill

When Feitan and Nobunaga are about to fight, she reminds them of the Troupe's rules. She later wonders what to do with the two boys and is confused by Nobunaga's reaction to the situation. She attends a meeting with the other Spiders, minus Nobunaga and Chrollo, to reorganize their plans.[26] She is paired up with Franklin for the upcoming attack on the Cemetery Building. On their way there, Franklin explains to her that Gon probably reminds Nobunaga of Uvogin, but Shizuku bluntly replies that fighting better while looking out for someone is a loser mentality.[9] After receiving the order to go on a rampage around the Cemetery Building,[27] the two steal a car and crash through a checkpoint. The police officers and Mafia members blow the car up, but Franklin and Shizuku emerge unscathed and begin the massacre.[28] The slaughter continues[29] until everyone around the Cemetery Building is dead. The Troupe then runs the auction, and Shizuku assists Kortopi in finding specific items so that he can create copies of them.[30] She is also one of the Troupe members whom Kortopi copies so that they can trick the Mafia into thinking that several Troupe members (including Chrollo) were killed during the encounter. Meanwhile, the Troupe returns to their hideout with many of the auction items and celebrates.[31]

Shizuku287

Shizuku reading her fortune

After Nobunaga opposes Chrollo's decision to leave Yorknew[15] and Chrollo uses his newly-stolen ability to read his fortune, Shizuku examines the prophecy and asks Chrollo to read hers as well. She deciphers her own poem and states that she will die the following week along with Pakunoda and Shalnark. However, she cannot figure out who the "Scarlet Eyes" person is.[3] She later reads Hisoka's shocking fortune, who reveals that he disclosed her ability to the chain user. She then discusses the differences between Conjuration and Manipulation with Shalnark.[32] Chrollo teams her up with Machi and Pakunoda to ensure her safety for the duration of the week.[33] Her group and Chrollo's head out to kill the chain user after realizing that he's a member of the Kurta Clan, with Kortopi joining them to track the copied eyes.[34]

Chrollo Machi Shizuku

Shizuku, Machi, and Chrollo confronting their pursuers

On the way to the Hotel Beitacle,[35] Chrollo senses two pursuers and stops with Shizuku and Machi to confront them. They turn out to be Gon and Kurapika, with Killua replacing the latter so that he can slip away unnoticed. They decide to restrain them and wait for the other members in the lobby of the hotel.[36] When a man with a radio begins to yell at the group about five minutes before 7:00 p.m., Shizuku asks Chrollo if they should kill him, but Chrollo tells her to ignore him.[13] Two minutes later, Kortopi, Nobunaga, and Pakunoda arrive at the hotel. As the clock reaches 7:00 p.m., the lights suddenly go out. The Spiders manage to thwart Gon and Killua's attempt to escape, with Shizuku realizing that the man with the radio was also involved in their plan. When her eyes begin to adjust to the darkness, she is the first one to notice that Chrollo is missing.[37]

Boss is gone

Shizuku questioning where is the boss

She holds Gon while Nobunaga reads a message left by Kurapika.[38] When Phinks, Feitan, and Shalnark arrive, a disagreement between Nobunaga and Phinks breaks out about whether to follow the chain user's orders. Phinks asks Shizuku what she thinks, and she initially wants to settle things with a coin toss, but she soon sides with Nobunaga. When the latter prepares to prevent Phinks from following after Pakunoda, Shizuku knocks Nobunaga unconscious and states that the rules of the Troupe are absolute, stressing that Troupe members must not fight each other. When Kurapika calls them again, the Spiders agree to return to their hideout.[8]

After arranging the hostage exchange and then successfully carrying it out, Pakunoda returns without Chrollo and fires her Memory Bombs into six of the Troupe's members, quickly collapsing afterward. Shizuku checks her body and confirms that she's dead, asking the others what happened.[10]

Greed Island arc[]

HxH2011 EP61 Shizuku and Kortopi agree to play

Shizuku and Kortopi talking with Shalnark

On September 6th, Shizuku and several other members at the hideout witness Phinks and Feitan enter Greed Island.[39] Four days later, while she plays a game of chess with Kortopi next to Pakunoda's grave, Shalnark invites the two to accompany him into the game since even if they went back home to Meteor City, they wouldn't have anything to do.[11] Within the game and at a town called Rubicuta, Shalnark explains how Greed Island works and shows Kortopi and Shizuku how their respective abilities have no effect on the game's cards. He reveals that Greed Island takes place in the real world and that there are likely multiple Game Masters. Shizuku forgets what the reward is for clearing the game, and Kortopi reminds her that they can take back three specified slot cards with them. Shalnark theorizes that they may be able to use the "Toraemon" card to bring back every card. After Kortopi and Shizuku agree that it's worth trying, Shalnark says that their first objective should be to obtain "Eye of God" or "Analysis" before they then locate Phinks and Feitan.[40]

Phantom Troupe In GI

Shizuku and the others in Greed Island

Sometime after regrouping with Phinks and Feitan, the Troupe members return to the real world and attempt to reach the real island.[41] Upon their arrival, however, Razor confronts them and introduces himself as a Game Master. He informs them that trespassers aren't welcome and that they can come back using the right way. He then uses an "Eliminate" card to send them to six different locations on the Azian Continent.[42]

Prophecy comes true

Shizuku remembering the prophecy

After returning the right way and realizing that Chrollo headed to the real Greed Island according to his fortune, Shalnark tells the others that he must have hired someone to play the game for him and then use his name as a message to them. As he adds that the exorcist must be on the island, Hisoka reveals himself and that it was his idea to use Chrollo's name. Shizuku is left somewhat disappointed that Hisoka was the person Chrollo hired.[43] Finally locating the exorcist Abengane with the help of their new member Kalluto, the Troupe has Hisoka make a deal with him so that he will remove Kurapika's Judgment Chain from Chrollo's heart.[44]

Chimera Ant arc[]

The Phantom Troupe arrive at Meteor City

Shizuku and five other Troupe members making their way to Meteor City

During the Chimera Ant crisis, Shizuku, Feitan, Shalnark, Phinks, Kalluto, and Bonolenov all journey to Meteor City. On their way there, they discuss how the Chimera Ant invasion happened and why some of them came to the city. The Troupe is met by some locals who tell them about the self-proclaimed Queen making a nest near the city and wreaking havoc amongst the people, and how the assembly is currently dealing with it. Seeing that no immediate progress is being made, the Troupe take it upon themselves to solve the Chimera Ant problem, with Phinks assuring the officials that they will exterminate the Queen by the end of the day. The Troupe members approach the enormous nest and walk right in through the front door.[5]

With Kalluto surprised that they are going their separate ways, Phinks points out that he probably has abilities that he doesn't want the others to see. He also tells him that whoever kills the Queen first will become the acting leader. Shizuku runs into an officer named Pike, parrying his web with her vacuum and taking note of the strength of the fiber, unaware that she has confetti stuck to her clothes which allows Kalluto to listen in on her battle.[45]

Shizuku after escaping Pike's net - Episode 97

Shizuku fighting the Chimera Ant Pike

Shizuku reads Pike's movements while evading his attacks, conjuring and dispelling Blinky to defend.[46] Pike traps her with his Love Shower, but Shizuku manages to create an opening in the web with her vacuum and causes it to stick to her clothes only. While the Ant tries to take her to Zazan, she quickly slips out and clubs him with Blinky several times. After stepping back, she confidently states that she has won and will keep her distance to avoid being caught again.[7] She then has Blinky drain Pike of his blood through the numerous wounds, and the Ant finds himself unable to cover all of them at once. After Blinky finishes draining Pike, Shizuku prepares to leave and then runs over to Pike's corpse, remarking that they are both pretty stupid since he could have his webbing on himself to stop the bleeding. Wearing her ripped shirt and pants, she is the last to arrive at Feitan's fight against Zazan. She angrily tells Phinks that she won after he sees her apparel and asks if she lost, with Shalnark laughing and commenting on how angry she is. Shizuku watches the fight and says that Feitan isn't moving well, with Shalnark guessing that he isn't in top form.[47]

97 - Shizuku wearing Phinks's clothes

Shizuku dressed in Phinks' clothes

The Troupe members continue to watch the fight until the transformed Zazan breaks Feitan's left arm. Phinks then jokingly asks Feitan if he wants to switch places with Bonolenov, but after realizing that Feitan is preparing to use his ability, they all start to run away. Kalluto is left confused, and the others explain how dangerous Feitan's ability is, with Shizuku adding that they tried to watch once and were almost killed. After Feitan kills Zazan with his ability, the Troupe members encounter the transformed Meteor City residents, who all beg to be killed. However, Phinks refuses to do so and orders them to show what spirit they still have left as Meteor City natives. The other members ready their weapons, including Shizuku who prepares to use Blinky, and the Troupe members easily take care of the transformed residents. After returning to the city, they decide to stay and take care of any more Ants that appear, but Shalnark receives a text from Nobunaga asking for help, leaving Phinks disappointed that it wasn't Chrollo contacting them.[18]

Succession Contest arc[]

Chap 377 - Phantom Troupe members

Shizuku in the Black Whale

Shizuku boards the Black Whale with the other Troupe members and begins searching for Hisoka in Tier 5. On the fourth day of the voyage, the Troupe gathers together in the crowded central dining hall and discusses the situation. When the Cha-R Family claims the table for themselves, the Troupe leaves without a fight. Chrollo states that they will meet again at that table and orders them to bring him Hisoka's head. Quickly after the group splits up, Shizuku and Bonolenov ask Chrollo if he wants to team up. Chrollo agrees to work with them, but stresses that he will be the one to kill Hisoka. Shizuku points out that both her and Bonolenov's abilities don't work well against Hisoka's Bungee Gum, and Chrollo replies that he plans to attack Hisoka as soon as he sees him. Shizuku says that she will look for Hisoka in disguise, and Bonolenov says that he will transform rather than disguise himself, explaining that he will use his Battle Cantabile: Metamorphosen. He adds that while he can take many forms, he isn't strategic enough to devise a plan, so he is asking Chrollo for help. After Chrollo gives Bonolenov advice on how to use his ability, Shizuku asks Chrollo if he can read their fortunes again, hoping that it will give them some clues. However, Chrollo reveals that the ability disappeared from his book, and after realizing the implication, Shizuku likens Chrollo's book to the Death Note. As Chrollo stays silent, Bonolenov tells Shizuku that she keeps thinking that.[48]

The three are last seen making their way from Tier 5 to Tier 4 through the central passage.[49] On the seventh day of the voyage, after Phinks, Nobunaga, and Feitan discuss the current situation with Ken'i and Tajao, Phinks asks them to verify Morena's location while they contact the other Troupe members and hunt down the hit man.[50] On the tenth day of the voyage, after Onior confirms with Hinrigh that Hisoka isn't in Tier 4, he says that Hinrigh can permit the Spiders to search that tier.[51]

Abilities & Powers[]

Due to Shizuku being born in Meteor City, her existence is not recorded in any database, which makes obtaining information on her nearly impossible.[15] Shizuku possesses a unique ability that allows her to delete all traces of the Troupe's activities. She is also a skilled pickpocket.[6] She can single-handedly overpower competent Nen users and bodyguards like Ivlenkov and Baise,[12] also winning a battle against a Chimera Ant Officer.[7] Razor deemed her an impressive individual.[42] Kalluto also noted his inferiority compared to Shizuku's level.[18]

Preternatural Perception: According to Kurapika, Shizuku (and the other Spiders) could sense Kurapika's hostile intent before attacking them, even though they were meters away.[35]

Defend x And x Attack

Shizuku arm-wrestling with Gon

Enhanced Strength: Shizuku ranked twelfth in arm-wrestling among the Troupe.[4] Even though she was using her non-dominant hand, Gon struggled to defeat her during their bout.[6] But while using both of her hands, Shizuku was able to restrain Gon.[8] She was able to kill Ivlenkov and Baise with a single swing of her vacuum cleaner,[12] with which she also managed to knock Nobunaga out for some time (although she struck him from behind)[8] as well as to draw blood from Pike.[47]

Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: Shizuku is at least as fast as many of the other Troupe members, as seen during their pursuit of Squala[36] and based on the speed at which she jumped out of a car when Owl landed on it.[2] She was capable of covering her ears in the instant before Uvogin screamed.[21] According to Kurapika, the Spiders could avoid an attack that lasted 0.5 seconds.[35] In her confrontation with Pike, she was able to avoid his web several times, getting caught only when he unleashed his Love Shower, and still managing to create a gap large enough to allow her to escape.[7] She landed 29 blows on him within a few seconds and quickly jumped away from him after the attack.[7][47] Shizuku was also able to casually watch Feitan and Zazan fight at such extreme speed that Kalluto couldn't even see what was happening.[47]

Spiders running 2

Shizuku sprinting at high speed

Enhanced Agility: Shizuku can run on the sides of buildings and easily jump horizontally from one to another.[36]

Keen Intellect: Shizuku correctly deciphered the month allegory in the Troupe's fortunes.[3]

Proficient Strategist: Shizuku proved herself to be fairly proficient at finding an enemy's weak points in a fight, learning the pattern of their movements before they attacked, and formulating a plan accordingly. Furthermore, she is a quick thinker, as demonstrated when escaping Pike's web. In her battle against him, she figured out the speed and range of his web.[7] She wounded him in precise spots to prevent him from defending himself against her subsequent attack. However, she is also somewhat absent-minded in combat and cannot predict her opponent's every move. After using Blinky to drain Pike of his blood, she realized that he might have avoided death by wrapping himself in his own web to stop the bleeding.[47]

Proficient Weapon Specialist: Shizuku's primary method of fighting is clubbing her opponents with Blinky.[12] She is capable of landing powerful strikes in quick succession.[7]

Nen[]

Shizuku is a Conjurer.[2] Her Nen ability gives her the power to materialize a vacuum cleaner (named Blinky) that sucks up everything except living things and objects made of Nen. She uses her ability to clean up any traces of evidence the Troupe has left behind.[12] Shalnark stated that Shizuku's ability is rare.[3] The only techniques she has been seen using are obviously, Ten, Hatsu,[12] and Gyo,[36] which she used on her eyes as a precaution against In. Her Enhancement skills also appear to be quite high for a Conjurer, as she came out of the explosion of a car completely unscathed.[28] It has also been said that the Troupe does not allow amateurs to join them, confirming that Shizuku is much more skilled than the average Nen user.[52]

Type: Conjuration Blinky (デメちゃん, Deme-chan)
HxH2011 EP45 Blinky IMG2

Shizuku can conjure a vacuum cleaner Nen Beast she calls Blinky. It can inhale an infinite number of nonliving objects, but not anything that she considers living[2] or that is made with Nen. The latter restriction enables her to spot traps.[40] Only the last object to be vacuumed can be regurgitated, and Shizuku herself has no idea where the rest goes.[2] Her ability is extolled as rare and valuable to the Troupe since it allows the Spiders to clean up the evidence of crime scenes[3] (i.e., blood and corpses).[12] She can also use Blinky to remove foreign materials (such as poisons and gases) from living bodies.[12][23] It appears that she has to say aloud what she wants to vacuum up.[12][23][47] She does not always need direct contact for Blinky to inhale an object.[47] In battle, Shizuku uses the vacuum as a club.[12][7] Her most dangerous technique, however, involves exsanguinating her opponents by having Blinky suck up their blood from any open wounds.[47]

Trivia[]

Shizuku - Volume 16 Extra

Shizuku's tattoo in the Volume 16 extras

  • In the official databook, her name is also spelled as "Chzzok".[1] On the merchandise items that were used and sold during the Hunter × Hunter-Animate Cafe limited-time collaboration, her name appears as "Chzzuk".[53]
  • Shizuku's name, if spelled with kanji, could be "滴"—meaning a droplet of liquid (referring to her considerably smaller and more petite build within the Troupe); it is also phonetically very similar to "静か" (shizuka)—meaning "to be quiet and calm", referring to her personality.
  • The name of Shizuku's Nen ability probably derives from "出目" (deme), meaning "protruding eyes", plus the diminutive suffix "-chan". This explains why Viz translated it as "Blinky".
  • In the Volume 16 extras, Shizuku's spider tattoo appears with a number 6 on its abdomen. However, Shizuku reveals ink on her finger and the correct number 8 is shown on the spider's abdomen, with Togashi apologizing for the confusion.
  • Shizuku is the only Spider who requested Chrollo to read her fortune, doing so twice.[3][48]
  • She is one of the four Spiders that have been confirmed not to have participated in the Kurta Clan massacre, the others being Hisoka and the two Zoldycks. In all these cases, it is primarily due to the member having joined the Troupe years after the massacre happened.
  • It should be noted that in Japanese names, a person's surname is placed before their given name in contrast with a Westerner's.
    • However, she, Nobunaga and Feitan (the latter having a name of Chinese origin) grew up in Meteor City alongside people who say their name in Western order, so they adopted Western order too. Chinese and Japanese people who grew up outside China and Japan also adopted the Western order.
