Shura ((しゅ)()()()()()()()()(), Shura—lit. "Carnage") is a character that appears in Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission. He was an On user and one of Jed's right hands.[1]

Appearance[]

Shura's design

Shura was a young man with long, black hair reaching his upper back and a middle part. He was of average height, with pale skin and a slender build.

The outfit he was seen in most often in Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission consisted of a high-collared black shirt with red accents, loose black pants, a maroon belt, black and red fabric arm bracers, and knee-high boots matching Gaki's. Overtop, he wore a white and red short-sleeved jacket that had cut-outs on the upper arms and tapered into two tails at the back.

As a child, he wore an identical outfit to Gaki's: short black pants and a dark grey and red short-sleeved shirt, with black shoes and black straps around his ankles. His hair was also shorter as a child, only reaching his collarbones. As an adolescent, he, Gaki, and Rengoku wore matching long, black baggy pants and long beige cloaks with pockets.

It is unknown if Shura possessed a brand from Kanan Prison Camp like Rengoku had, given that they escaped from the Hunters simultaneously. He likely had one as well, but it is never shown.

Personality[]

Shura was often calm and spoke in an even tone, and he enjoyed being in control and the one pulling the strings behind the scenes during his group's mission at Heavens Arena. He was also considered ruthless and willing to do whatever it took to achieve his goals.[2]

Despite appearing calm most of the time, Shura was also easy to enrage if a nerve was struck, particularly one regarding the Shadow and his community, as he cared very deeply for them. Overall, Shura was a lot like the stereotypical Manipulator.[1]

Like Gaki and Rengoku, Shura was filled with hatred, hellbent on getting revenge on the Hunter Association, which led to him and his two friends forming a contract with Jed and becoming On users. Shura was also depicted as much less sympathetic than Gaki or Rengoku, particularly towards Hunters.[1]

He was also depicted as the leader of their trio, handling their essential conversations. In a flashback of Shura, Gaki, and Rengoku going to resurrect On, Shura did all of the talking in order to form their contract with On and Jed. Also, before Jed joined their group, Shura was always shown walking in the middle of their trio and slightly in front of the other two, seemingly leading them.[1]

Background[]

Shura, like Rengoku and Gaki, was a descendant of members of the Shadow, and was therefore banished to live in a village in the mountains after the Shadow itself and its members were destroyed by Netero. He was described as living peacefully as a child with the members of his community in their mountain village until, eventually, the nation and Garcia no longer wanted any descendants of the Shadow to exist. So they were persecuted, which later led to them revolting.[1]

Garcia then insisted on removing the descendants completely. So the descendants were captured by Hunters and put into Kanan Prison Camp, where the living and working conditions were described as harsh and depraved. Although many of the descendants of the Shadow died while living in the prison camp, Shura, along with Shura and Gaki, escaped as children.[1]

These events led the trio to seek out a way to revive On, which eventually led to the reincarnation of Jed, whom they then made a contract with by offering up their lives in order to achieve the revenge they sought against the Hunter Association.[1]

Plot[]

The Last Mission[]

Shura is first seen in The Last Mission alongside Rengoku, Gaki, and Jed, trudging through the snow to arrive at a small outpost town during a blizzard. They free the prisoners imprisoned there in order for them to join their team for their upcoming mission at Heavens Arena, where they plan to take the people there hostage to force the Hunter Association to release the Black Report to the public.[1]

On the first day of the Battle Olympia, the four of them walk through the alleys of the Heavens Arena city to get to the tournament. They are later seen in the crowd inside Heavens Arena while Netero makes his opening announcement.[1]

After Cocco finishes introducing the Battle Olympia event and the mascots come out to dance, Shura and his group are still in the crowd. Gaki reaches his hand out towards Rengoku, perhaps trying to instigate a fight, but she slaps him away with little effort. Shura remarks how strong she is, staring at her softly before telling the group to meet again in Nirvana once their mission ends. However, his comment seems to be aimed at Rengoku specifically, knowing that she is about to die. Rengoku, Shura, and Gaki then dash off in different directions to complete their missions.[1]

Shura heads to floor 230 to access the Heavens Arena security control room, knocking out all of the workers in the room. Shura uses his ability Machine Eater to take control of all the technology; all the screens in the room turn red after being infected with his On. Shura remotely locks down the building in order to keep everyone inside. He can see on the security footage when Gon punches a hole through the outer wall of floor 50 to get back into the building and sends people to capture Gon and Killua.[1]

Later, Gon and Killua get caught up fighting the Floor Masters that Shura presumably sent after them. Shura informs Gaki about Gon and Killua's ongoing fight upstairs and displays live footage on a nearby monitor for Gaki to view. Gaki insists that he get to fight the two boys, so Shura rigs the elevator Gon and Killua go into to bring them directly to Gaki on an unoccupied floor.[1]

While Shura watches Gaki's fight with Gon and Killua on a monitor in the security room, Kurapika appears behind him, ready to fight. Shura turns to greet Kurapika, excited to get to meet him after watching Kurapika try to find him and the security room for so long. Kurapika then rushes towards Shura.[1]

Despite not knowing anything about On, Kurapika can still recognize that Shura is a descendant of the Shadow based on his fighting style. Kurapika also tries to understand Shura's motives better, which only causes Shura to rage. Shura then calls upon his ability Shape Shifter to create an identical copy of Kurapika to fight against him. His ability also gives him information on Kurapika's past and the Kurta Clan.[1]

While the duplicate and Kurapika are fighting, Gaki dies after being defeated by Gon and Killua. Shura, like Jed, seems to be aware of this the second that it happens. He mourns Gaki's death and is sad about being the only member of their trio remaining. As this happens, Kurapika manages to stab through the duplicate, perhaps due to Shura being distracted, and the duplicate fades away.[1]

Kurapika falls to the floor, exhausted, and Shura questions him about his motives for fighting. He empathizes with Kurapika's past and joins Kurapika on the floor, trying to convince him to join his side and make a contract with On.[1]

When Kurapika refuses, Shura picks him up by the throat and attempts to strangle him to death. He then drops Kurapika in order to catch Leorio's knife flying toward him. Leorio runs in and goes to Kurapika's side on the floor.[1]

Kurapika admits that he and Shura are alike in some ways, but Leorio argues with Kurapika until he is reinvigorated enough to continue fighting Shura. Shura then rushes towards the two of them, but Leorio is able to distract Shura enough that Kurapika gets the opportunity to stab right through Shura's chest.[1]

Shura staggers back and vomits a lot of blood into his hand. Once it has all drained through the gaps between his fingers, he is left holding only an On injector. He throws it, and it stabs into the back of Kurapika's neck.[1]

Shura then stumbles back against the wall, falling to a sitting position on the ground. He informs Kurapika that he will not be able to use Nen anymore and will die unless he makes a contract with On. Upon seeing Kurapika's horrified reaction, Shura tries to reassure him, saying he should be honored to be infected with Jed's blood.[1]

In his final moments, Shura calls out to Jed and says a final goodbye to him, leaving the rest of their mission in his hands. All the monitors in the room return to normal as Shura slumps over, dead.[1]

Abilities & Powers[]

Shura was a dangerous foe. Aside from the benefits granted to him by On, he was a capable hand-to-hand fighter, good in offense, but seemingly lacked in defense. He was also a skilled manipulator, managing to affect Kurapika with his speech, and he could continue manipulating the security system even while fighting.[1]

Shura was also right-handed, often only using his right hand for things and keeping it free whenever possible, much like a Manipulator or Conjurer. When he picked up Kurapika with his right hand to strangle him, he dropped Kurapika in order to catch the knife coming at him, even though his left hand was completely free.[1]

Hisoka rated Shura's overall strength as a 65 in his battle with Kurapika.[1]

Enhanced Strength: Shura appeared to be physically stronger than Kurapika. At the same time, the latter's eyes were scarlet[1] (although in the movie, Emperor Time has much more limited effects than in the manga).

Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: Shura managed to fight with Kurapika and Leorio at the same time, even dodging sneak attacks from behind.[1]

Enhanced Stamina: Despite fighting both Kurapika and Leorio while also controlling the Heavens Arena, Shura showed no sign of physical or mental strain.[1]

Proficient Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Shura's skills in bare-handed combat allowed him to go toe-to-toe with two armed opponents, although his defense is not as good as his offense.[1]

On[]

As an On user, Shura had access to all Nen categories, although he was most often seen using Manipulation and was mistakenly identified as one by Kurapika.[1]

Shura's On Abilities
Machine Eater (機械に巣食う棘(マシンイーター) Mashin Ītā, lit. "Machine-building Thorn")
Machine Eater
Through On, Shura generates tendrils that enter the targeted machines and give him full control of all their functions.[1]
Shape Shifter (物真似鳥(シェイプシフター) Sheipu Shifutā, lit. "Mimicking Bird")
Shape Shifter
Shura generates a duplicate of his enemy made of On. The duplicate has all the physical abilities and fighting prowess of the original and, before creation, analyzes the person to give Shura all the info he needs about them, like their past or motivations. To overpower the original, Shura can also enhance the duplicate with On.[1]
