The Southernpiece Auction (サザンピース・オークション, Sazanpīsu Ōkushon) is an auction held annually in Yorknew City and the largest in the world.[1]

Background[]

The auction is held over the course of five days from September 6th to 10th by the Southernpiece Auction House.[2] Some of the most sought after items in the world have been put on sale at the auction, including multiple copies of the game Greed Island.[3] The auction’s catalog, which costs Jenny Symbol 201112 million by itself, acts as the admission ticket and allows up to five people to attend.[2]

Plot[]

Heavens Arena arc[]

The auction is indirectly mentioned by Leorio and its background explained by Kurapika.[4]

Yorknew City arc[]

As Gon and Killua try to find a way to obtain a copy of Greed Island, the latter mentions that Milluki told him about a rumor that someone is selling multiple copies of the game at the auction in Yorknew City. Gon wonders whether it could be Ging, and Killua tells him that they need a lot more money either way.[3]

Gon and Killua using the Hunter Website

After accessing the Hunter Website to learn more about the game, the two discover that seven copies have currently been registered for the Yorknew auction, with the minimum bid set at Jenny Symbol 20118.9 billion. Killua can't believe how much higher the price is, but Gon wonders if they can take part by also selling. Killua agrees that they can find their own loot to auction and hopes that they can make enough with their Jenny Symbol 2011800 million to afford a copy of the game.[5]

It's announced that the annual auction in Yorknew City is the biggest in the world, with trillions of Jenny exchanging hands over the course of ten days. It's stated that an item bought for Jenny Symbol 201110,000 could sell for a hundred million the next day. Lastly, it's mentioned that while there are thousands of auction houses, there are also many that deal in illegal goods alone.[1] Leorio tells Gon and Killua that Southerpiece is the world’s premier auction house and that they won’t even be able to afford the entrance fee with the money they have.[6]

While trying to track the Phantom Troupe, Gon gets confirmation from Killua that the auction starts on September 6th and hopes to catch at least one Spider in the three days until then. After Gon pawns his Hunter License for Jenny Symbol 2011100 million,[7] Killua asks what they should do first, and Leorio quickly tells the two that they should buy a copy of the Southernpiece Catalog. The three then make their way to the Southernpiece Auction House, and once inside, Leorio explains that Southernpiece is Yorknew's leading auction house and that the Jenny Symbol 201112 million catalog acts as the admission ticket. He adds that while the auctions happen from September 6th to 10th, they will need the catalog to know when specific items are being auctioned. As they walk through the building, he reminds Gon and Killua to look up the items before they come back.[2]

48 - Catalog

A receptionist welcomes them, and another receptionist asks how they plan to pay for the catalog, surprised to see that Gon is the one signing the bank transfer. The first receptionist hands him the large catalog and explains where to find the items being auctioned. He also showed him his admission ticket, which allowed up to five people to enter during the five days. However, she clarifies that the card can only be registered under one name, and Gon happily tells her to register it under Gon Freecss. After the three read the entry on Greed Island, Leorio points out that a copy is being auctioned every day from September 6th to 8th, and then two on September 10th. He says that now they just need to raise the money to reach the minimum bid of Jenny Symbol 20118.9 billion. Later on, Milluki also enters the auction house and asks for a catalog.[2]

While Gon is eager to go after the Troupe, Killua reminds him that the auction is the day after tomorrow and that they should be raising money. Gon mentions that he has a plan with a 70% chance of success (before changing it to 60%), and Killua puts him in charge of the game.[8]

Greed Island arc[]

On the first day of the auction, Killua worries about the Troupe tracking them and tells Gon that they will have to be cautious on the way there. He then tells Gon that his plan is the only thing they have since they don’t have the money to win the game. Gon asks if Zepile is the only one going with them, and Killua confirms that Leorio will stay behind to watch over Kurapika. After being berated by Killua, Gon finally reveals what his plan is, and Killua wonders why he didn’t think of it before, excitedly adding that it has an 80% chance of success.[9]

Phinks and Feitan at the auction

As Gon, Killua, and Zepile make their way by car to the auction hall, Killua makes sure that only one copy is being auctioned that day, with Gon confirming that it will be held in Hall B. After the two allude to someone attending the auction, the multibillionaire Battera is shown inside the auction house as a reporter asks him why he is so interested in the game. As Gon and Killua enter the correct auction hall and feel out of place since they’re so young, they suddenly spot Phinks and Feitan, running out of the hall as quickly as they can. The two Troupe members quickly catch up with them and assure them that they are only there to enjoy the auction, with Phinks holding up a stolen catalog. As the four return to the hall, it’s announced that the auction is open and bidding will begin.[9]

After a Fossilized Deodorosaurus Dropping, the announcer introduces a copy of Greed Island and points out that the game is running inside a JoyStation Console without electricity. She then brings a large man with a sledgehammer onto the stage, and he slams the weapon against the console, which is completely undamaged. The woman explains that the game’s strange power protects the console as long as someone is playing. She then mentions that the auction acquired their seven copies from a Hunter named Jeitsari, who agreed that his copies would be given to the auction if no one had cleared the game by January 1st, 2000. After explaining more about the game and how dangerous it is, the announcer starts the bidding at Jenny Symbol 2011100 million. The amount quickly reaches Jenny Symbol 20111.2 billion, and as Gon mimics Battera’s hand movement and asks what it means, he accidentally doubles the amount. As Zepile berates him and Battera raises the amount, the hand signal system for bidding at the auction is explained in detail. After Battera wins the copy for Jenny Symbol 20113.05 billion, Gon and Killua approach him with an offer to help clear the game. Once the three discuss the game and its mechanics, Battera agrees to give them an interview. Tsezguerra asks to see their Ren and tells Battera that the two boys will only end up dead.[10]

After Gon and Killua talk with Tsezguerra, Battera tells them that he plans to win all seven copies of the game at the auction. He adds that he is recruiting talented players and tells them to meet at the auction house on September 10th. After Gon and Killua leave to improve their Nen, Phinks and Feitan are seen eavesdropping on the conversation. Soon afterward, they destroy a car transporting a copy of the game and steal it along with a JoyStation Console.[11]

On September 10th, Battera wins the last two copies of the game for Jenny Symbol 201127.8 billion and Jenny Symbol 201160.2 billion, respectively. The audience applauds him, and two men mention that while Battera won all seven copies, he reportedly lost half his fortune at the auction. A woman then reports on the event and announces that Battera is recruiting people to play the game for him, with tryouts taking place in the auction house.[12]

Chimera Ant arc[]

Kite and the Amateur Hunters analyzing the specimen

After conducting a biological survey for Kakin,[13] Kite and the Amateur Hunters deliver their research to Wong. After thanking them, he mentions that Southernpiece has obtained a segment of a strange creature, which the auction is unable to list in its catalog since the species might be unregistered. He adds that Southernpiece would prefer to sell to a licensed Hunter rather than have it confiscated by the government. Along with Gon and Killua, the group travels to the auction house in Yorknew, and a curator leads them to a room with the creature's limb in a glass case. After they discuss the specimen, Podungo suggests taking back a sample, and Kite asks if they can have a small piece. The curator replies that he cannot refuse a request from someone recommended by Mr. Wong and hopes that the group will inform them if they ever find an Albino Ponytail Cat. He then hands them two small samples in glass jars.[14]

Trivia[]

  • Southernpiece is sometimes mistranslated as "Southernbees." Both Viz Media and Crunchyroll used this translation before later correcting it in the manga and 2011 anime adaptation, respectively.
  • The name is most likely a reference to the real-world Sotheby's, one of the largest brokers of rare collectibles.
