Summary

After Loberry is arrested as a suspect for Barrigen's murder and an investigator is sent to monitor Kacho's quarters, Kurapika convinces the remaining students to stay and continues with the Nen training. On Tier 5, several Phantom Troupe members confront the Buor Family and learn about the other Mafia families, hoping to find a way up to the higher tiers as they continue their search for Hisoka. In a large room filled with fourteen coffins surrounding a chamber in the middle, Nasubi stands beside the deceased Momoze and declares that she will become the foundation for the tree of Kakin.

Using his Hanzo Skill 4 to create a doppelganger, Hanzo tracks down and kills the bodyguard that killed Momoze. After the first lesson, Kurapika talks with Zhang Lei's and Halkenburg's bodyguards, trying his best to form an alliance with them. Camilla confronts Musse, one of Benjamin's soldiers, and causes him to shoot her. Her ability, however, takes Musse's life and uses it to revive the Prince. Camilla then confronts Benjamin, but she is quickly restrained and put into a cell, with Benjamin using his Benjamin Baton to continue using Musse's Secret Window to spy on Camilla.

Unable to find his body or anyone in Room 1013, Hanzo goes to Kurapika for help, and after a heated conversation with Vergei, Kurapika learns that the ability of Marayam's Guardian Spirit Beast is most likely the cause of the hidden Nen space. The abilities of the other Princes' Guardian Spirit Beasts are revealed, with one of Benjamin's soldiers witnessing the power of Halkenburg's, who plans to appeal to his father in order to end the succession battle. In Room 1013, Vergei continues to be skeptical about Nen, but Biscuit reveals her true form and leaves him in disbelief at her beauty, and she agrees to teach Nen to everyone there.

As Benjamin and Camilla are put under surveillance until Musse's body is found, Silent Majority strikes again at Kurapika's Nen class, killing Myuhan. Kacho, Fugetsu, and Melody begin working together to find a way to escape, planning to make their move at the Sunday banquet. Theta allows Tserriednich to take the Water Divination test, discovering that he's a Specialist. All current members of the Phantom Troupe gather together, and the newest member, Illumi Zoldyck, reveals that he joined on Hisoka's commission and that Hisoka hired Illumi to kill him. The Spiders go their separate ways to look for Hisoka, with Bonolenov and Shizuku teaming up with Chrollo.

While the Xi-Yu and Cha-R Families decide to find Hisoka before the Spiders do, the boss of the Heil-Ly Family, Morena Prudo, uses her ability on her subordinates, encouraging them to kill civilians, Nen users, and Princes. After recovering their weapons from a storage room, Phinks, Nobunaga, and Feitan begin working with the Cha-R Family to eliminate the hitman who has been killing their men. Mizaistom briefs the Royal Army on the killings in the lower tiers and advises moving more troops there, but worries that he's only delaying the inevitable. During their search for the murderer, Mizaistom finds Illumi and Kalluto on Tier 3, learning that all the Spiders are on board and wondering if he should tell Kurapika. He suddenly receives an urgent message and discovers that Fugetsu is on Tier 3.

Trivia

• The volume cover is based on the cover of Volume 12:
  • With several of them now appearing sad or angry rather than happy, the Phantom Troupe members are arranged in the same positions as the earlier cover.
  • The flowers represent the Spiders who have since died:
    • From top to bottom and right to left, the flowers replace Pakunoda, Uvogin, Shalnark, and Kortopi.
  • Kalluto, the new member #4, is in Hisoka's place.
  • Illumi, the new member #11, is in Uvogin's place and holds the flower representing the deceased Spider.
  • Phinks is the only member who appears with different clothing.
